For the last few months I've been trouble with Youtube. It's consistently slow to load - the whole site, not just videos. All other websites are fine, including Netflix etc. I've tried disabling browser extensions and different browsers including Edge, Brave, Chrome, Firefox and the MyTube app.

The MyTube app works fine and Firefox is sometimes okay but it's not my preferred browser so neither are a solution for embedded videos.

I'm on Windows 10 and all browsers are up to date, any suggestions greatly appreciated.

In Firefox, go to Tools -> Web developer -> network.

This will open a panel at the bottom listing the page components. Doe a reload of the page, and look for any object that shows a very long load time.

Firefox is working okay at the moment, there's nothing that stands out as being very long but when I do the same in Brave base.js takes over 13 seconds to load. In Edge desktop_polymer_inlined_html_polymer_flags.js takes over 27 seconds to load whereas base.js takes just under 1 second to load.

This is before even clicking a video.

    Thanks.

What's the full URL to those slow objects?

I was away from my computer so I've run it again in Brave.

    base.js is https://www.youtube.com/s/player/5dd3f3b2/player_ias.vflset/en_GB/base.js

    and the other is

    https://www.youtube.com/s/desktop/f5d0a4a9/jsbin/desktop_polymer_inlined_html_polymer_flags.vflset/desktop_polymer_inlined_html_polymer_flags.js

This time there's also https://i.ytimg.com/generate_204 which was 24.7 seconds and blocked (ad blocking maybe?).

Generate_204 shouldn't be blocked as an ad, as it isn't one. It returns no content, and as the name suggests, all it does is generate a HTTP 204 response. So there's nothing about it that should be slow to load.

The other objects are much larger, but are cachable and should be cached locally on your machine.

Is there anything else generating network traffic, disk activity or CPU usage?

Nothing unusual. The problem even occurs after a restart and if I go straight to YouTube. Network Traffic & Disk Activity would be at or close to zero and CPU Usage is just the usual Windows processes plus Adobe Creative Cloud and Steam with no downloads or updates.

Switching DNS Server is working so far. Strange that only YouTube in Edge, Chrome and Brave was affected but I won't look a gift horse. :D Thanks!

I think there's a setting to disable sound on websites in the browser. Maybe you have that turned on? I use Edge on Android and I have sound turned off.

In Chrome, right-click the tab with the youtube, and check that "Mute site" option is not checked.

Firefox is doing its own DNS Sec stuff now, probably bypassed whatever you were encountering.
