    I've recently invented the Tanhattan.

It's basically a Manhattan but you replace the rye whiskey for a protestant one such as Bushmills and substitute an orange wheel for the cherry.

Ulster says no but I say Yes!

Both the Jamesons and the Powers were Protestant, as it happens...

I've seen bitters mentioned as ingredients, what exactly are they and are they easily got?
Want to try some of the above recipes.
    Thanks

This is the most well known brand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angostura_bitters

But you can get other flavours too. They add an extra layer of flavour to cocktails, particularly ones with only a few ingredients. Should be able to get a bottle in a decent offy. Tesco up North sell them too, not sure about the South.

I use Angostura Bitters for cocktails, some Super Valus have them. The bottle goes a long way. Most cocktails only call for a dash or two.

Check out the "shake and strain" android app. You just tick all the ingredients in your cupboard/fridge and it tells you what you can make. The people who mentioned negronis above- you have to try out enzonis and bicycle thieves. Literally every single person I've made an enzoni for says it's one of the best drinks they've ever had.

Great. Will line it up for the weekend. Thanks

I have chocolate bitters that go lovely in an espresso martini. Lavender or grapefruit bitters can pump up a G&T nicely too.

    We had Sidecars yesterday

    50ml Cognac
    25ml Cointreau
    25ml Fresh Lemon Juice
    7ml Simple Syrup

Shaken on ice and strained into a glass with a lemon/sugar rim.

Very glad to have found this thread!

Whiskey Sours & New York Sours have been my go to recently

    60ml Tullamore Dew
    30ml simple
    30ml lemon juice
    Egg white
    Bitters

Dry shake everything bar the bitters, then wet shake and strain into tumbler with a few quick dashes of bitters.

Or forget the bitters, and gently pour 60mls of red wine into your finished cocktail to make a NY Sour.
The red wine sits nicely below the foam, and looks the business!

Herself is all about Espresso Martinis.
Tried a few different ways, but get the best "Mmmms" when I go equal parts vodka, Kahlua (Tia Maria is too sweet apparently) and machine espresso, and a dash of chocolate bitters.

Loving an Old fashioned these days, but i'm not sure that's classed as a cocktail?

It's basically the dictionary definition of a cocktail.

Picked up Plymouth gin in Tesco after a recommendation and find it works well. Also partial to a Gibson — a Martini garnished with a pickled onion.

Going for some margaritas tonight myself.

A martini is mostly straight gin.
    It really isn't for everyone.

I think the 'wetter' it is the more gin
The 'drier' it is the more vermouth.
    Vermouth is 15%.

My OH likes vodka, vermouth with tonic in one of those large g & t glasses.

Anyone had a fitzgerald? Gin based cocktail, super easy. It's ousted Tom Collins as my Gin cocktail. Bloody delicious.

And as mentioned in the whiskey thread. Last night had a Gold rush.

50-60ish ml Whiskey (I used Scotch- Johnny Walker Black)
    20-25ml of fresh lemon juice
    20-25ml of honey syrup.

Lemon peel into shaker with ice and get them mixed, then all the above in on top and shake for 10 seconds and strain into a glass over ice. Not a million miles from a Whiskey Sour but a bit less faff. The Scotch lends a nice peatiness to it.

    Went for a Horsefeather today

2:3 Whiskey to Ginger Beer (not ginger ale)
    about 5ml Lime Juice
    Couple of dashes of bitters

Highball glass, prepare over ice and stir

It's pretty close to being a Mule

I used Powers Gold Label because it's nicer than jemmy (fite me)

Tonight called for a Boulevardier with a shake of Angostura bitters.

I never quite got the mix right until tonight. Turns out I wasn't using enough ice before.

Drinking a Sabot tonight — Gin, Cointreau, lemon juice, simple syrup, egg white, topped up with champagne (prosecco in my case). Very tasty.

I needed an espresso martini to keep me awake for the football. Double espresso, double vodka, big splash of Kahlua and a dash of chocolate bitters. Probably didn't need the bitters.

Edit: think I'm gonna need something stronger... >_<
