Would a laptop charger bought from an Irish Company which has developed a fault be covered by the 2 year EU consumer warranty in the event the manufacturer only offered one year.

    No it's a consumable part

Forget about both the manufacturer's warranty and the European directive. What matters here is the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act. Under SoGaSoS, any product you buy must be:
    • of merchantable quality
    • fit for its normal purpose, and reasonably durable
    • as described
Your next step is to contact the retailer and see what they say. If they don't immediately offer repair/replacement, say that you're exercising your statutory rights under the Sale of Goods act. From there it's going to depend on (a) how hard they push back, (b) how hard you push, and (c) the exact specifics of the case - if you paid €5 for a cheap knock-off, it's a very different scenario to having paid €100 for an original manufacturer part.

Thanks for the replies. Charger was bought Feb 19, so almost two years. So by the sounds of it there is no recourse under the EU two year warranty and the seller offered one year.

Even if it was, you'd have to show that it was a fault of manufacture.

A power surge can destroy a charger. Leaving it plugged in too long can harm it too.

    It's a relatively cheap item
