I think...I mean I hope we are at peak hysteria, I don't know how they can keep up the fear for another month let alone another 3 it's beyond obvious to a large cohort that what we are doing now is just madness....mind you I thought that last June!

There are a lot of people so wrapped up in that fear that they probably couldn't live without it at this stage. They have lost all perspective, it is all fear all the time and you couldn't explain to them that it is unnecessary.

You all know the type, scared to walk past people on the street, running in the other direction if they met somebody on the stairs, impotently seething and glaring at children who aren't wearing masks in the park.

Covid is their identify, fueled by a constant diet of fear from the media. It is sad, and they are going to be another statistic in the mental health damage that is going to define this country pretty soon.

There are extremists in the covid world and the scary thing is that they do not realise they are extremists. Those who express opinions about closing borders, how partying college students should be arrested, how the government are infallible and must be 100% supported, where calling for nuance and context in the discussion makes you "not with us, so against us" etc.

I switched to Newstalk on the way home from work last night, it was a repeat of Pat Kenny. Now that was a lesson in hysteria.

So what has Pat had to sacrifice due to the pandemic?

He doesn’t have to worry about getting a qualification, finding a job during the inevitable recession and trying to get on the property ladder that is like a mirage to many young people.

He also hasn’t missed out on socialising and meeting someone you may end up starting a family with.

Students have had to pay a much heavier toll in order to protect the likes of Pat.

So yes they had a party. Outdoors mind. They broke the rules. They’re students ffs and they been largely compliant through all this.

Just like the Berlin bar and the “far right nazi”protests...these events are magnified and exploited to spoon feed to an Irish population who are so programmed at this stage that they can’t see the wood from the trees.

When are the barbers or hairdressers going to open? Is there any sign of anything opening up in April? This is just going far too long now

And what's hilarious is that we'll have to pay for it in the next few years. They're happy enough to be the most conservative in the continent because the public will pay for it.

Anyone that wants restrictions eased is accused of only wanting a pint and a desire to kill someone's granny.

Maybe you should recognise your own views on the term from December:
A particularly nasty label was 'granny killer'.

    Now stop using that term

As I said in a previous post that as the good weather comes upon us the lockdown will fall asunder.

We haven't seen the end of protests. It is clear there will be more and they will be bolder. More business people will also open up individually or collectively while St. Patrick's Day may we see organized parades around the country in defiance of the restrictions.

Kids in schools are simply not obeying social distancing or mask wearing and they congregate with parents at school gates or pal around together on the streets or to the shops on their breaks. Everyone knows it's a total joke.

It is clear that more and more people are openly breaking the 5km rule. Over the next few months beaches and beauty spots will be packed once again with kids young adults and families as they were last year. I wouldn't be surprised if gaelic games or concerts go ahead in defiance of the rules as numbers and deaths plummet due to the end of the winter season.

As time goes buy the pressure to go back to normal will irresistible

The GAA has run massive losses this year and will barely get by without govt help, pre covid grants were also massive, the GAA will not be doing anything like this

NPHET at it again tonight, stillbirths now.......

Note coroners yet to file their reports so it is just speculation and no increase in still births in the UK and US during the pandemic so this is just total and utter scaremongering.

Spread over the main stream media......this is just grossly irresponsible.

They are beyond a joke at this stage.

Using the tragic death of unborn children to strike fear into us is f##king repugnant.

"The Deputy Chief Medical Officer has said that NPHET has been made aware of four preliminary reports of stillbirths in Ireland, that could potentially be associated with a condition called Covid Placentitis.

Dr Ronan Glynn said that these reports should be interpreted with caution as the coroners have not concluded their findings"

How about waiting until the coroners have concluded their findings......irresponsible from Glynn and NPHET.........

Dr Glynn and co are probably not aware of the study of 4000 pregnant women that found no link. Easily missed I guess.. ...

I've been saying it since last year when video of NPCs getting hysterical over someone not wearing a mask [even if they have a valid exemption] that this has become are religion at best or a cult at worst for some people.

They've counted them in today's numbers, they can caution until the cows come home but right now they are Covid deaths until proven otherwise.

Thanks for that link, very interesting study.

Think tonight Glynn has just stressed out thousands of pregnant women around Ireland, he and NPHET are totally out of control. This has to stop.

I think you are absolutely spot on.

On another thread earlier today and yesterday we had posters who couldn't understand why most of us think these Nphet briefings should stop...I would hope now that this example would prove the point.

Causing anxiety in expecting mothers is just a disgrace, plain and simple.

Really disgusting behaviour from NPHET. Falling cases numbers mean they must be afraid of falling into obscurity.

    https://m.independent.ie/news/revealed-how-one-covid-outbreak-among-students-led-to-442-cases-40160573.html

Ramping it up big time today - would this by any chance have been dug up to scare all the UL students....

The story is implausible at best.

Contact tracers to be sure that this happened would have to categorically rule out that other people in those households had no contact with anyone else for several days. With this number of households that is impossible/highly implausible.

While you can speculate that one outbreak could spread this widely you cannot prove it beyond a reasonable doubt therefore it is just speculation.

Other households may well have picked it up down the shops, workplace, other contacts etc.

Yes talk about how quickly the virus can spread, yes tell students not to have big mental parties, yes tell people to keep social distancing but stop manipulating with scare stories that are not fact just speculation.

Is anyone else beginning to wonder exactly when someone is going to put a stop to this merry go round of unscientific garbage (Glynn and still births today, this households spread story etc etc) coming out of supposedly expert bodies and then being spouted across our national media as scary headline news.

I am not a conspiracy theorist, communist , riot thug, right wing nut, 5G nut, the moon landings did happen, scientologist or anti vaxer......

    Just for the record........

Frightening that these people have a national platform to broadcast their extremist views.

    So from that video:
"There's no excuse for it," Student speaks out against Limerick street party

University of Limerick student Niamh spoke to Andrea Gilligan about the "frustrating" and "disheartening" street party. "There's a fear now that every student from UL is going to be tarnished with the same brush." Andrea has little sympathy for those involved. "There was no way students went to that party last night and didn't know the implications of what could potentially happen."

Andrea also spoke to the Higher Education Minister, Simon Harris, about the incident. On Lunchtime Live, Minister Harris said the scenes were 'beyond unacceptable' and there has to be serious consequences.

He said: “This is an attack on our national effort. "Anyone who goes out and breaks public health rules is actually trying to set us back as a country. It is utterly, utterly indefensible. "Not too far away from those scenes in Limerick, there are patients fighting for their lives in University Hospital Limerick... there are nurses, doctors, healthcare assistants and others working around the clock to save lives. "To say it was a kick in the gut or slap in the face to that work is probably an understatement."

Minister Harris said the incident is being taken "extremely seriously" by gardaí. He has also spoken to the the UL president, and disciplinary action ‘up to and including’ expulsion will be examined for any students in breach of rules. He said: “I don’t want to prejudice the process, but in my conversations with the [university] president… that’s absolutely the intention of the university.”

However, the minister said it's important not to tar all students with the same brush, as most have 'sacrificed a hell of a lot' and are following the guidelines. He said it's other students who feel 'desperately let down' by what happened in Limerick last night.

So from that you are saying - Niamh - a University of Limerick Student and Simon Harris - Minister of Higher Education are extremists because of the above?

The definition of an extremist being :
    Extremist
A person who holds extreme political or religious views, especially one who advocates illegal, violent, or other extreme action.

Don't reckon it's Niamh or Mr Harris broadcasting that is at fault there tbh ...

I am the same, we live in interesting times so anything could be true!!

But never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity...as the saying goes.

These are all a product of a highly dysfunctional Health system.

They are bureaucrats with too much power and no accountability...you can imagine the group dynamic, the self importance, the belief that they are saving lives, the attention, who have NEVER faced a difficult question...some of them are famous now...it can get the better of a lot of us.

Why wouldn't think we'd all eat up their words without question.

But, I'll keep an open mind, there are way too many elements that are unexplainable for my liking!

Anyone know if fines/essays or contact tracing was carried out in the link mentioned or is it ok just to target students with fines and possible explusion. Getting a bit sick of the discrimination directed at young people.

Totally agree with you - I don't think it's some mad conspiracy but just a bunch of bureaucrats who are out of control and drunk on self importance, loving the limelight and as they are surrounded now in echo chambers bouncing off each other all day......

The problem is it is dangerous - on the Irish Times the most read story is the Glynn scare story over stillbirths - yes some people will do the research and check into it but many including many expectant mothers and couples will just lap it up and get stressed and worried.

The media has clearly shown it just trots out the NPHET briefings without question and of course in a headline it becomes fact for many people - I guarantee tonight there are women who have some anxiety over this.

This is being caused by irresponsible behaviour from NPHET and there seems to be no one who is prepared to question there behaviour who has the authority to change it.

When will things go back to normal?

With vaccines now available will we be here In January 2022 with covid dominating the news headlines? I would love to know.
I hope they open things somewhat during the summer months, probably level 4 then 3 until the seasons change, then back into lockdown. It will never ever go back to normal. They've been dropping hints for that since the very start of this sorry mess. If you liked staying at home for the rona, you're going to love it for climate change.
