    I love this week's category

Two of my three favourites are neck and neck at the moment - Heart & Bonnie Tyler so won't be sad to see either of those win.

Alone would have been my pick had I been quicker on the trigger ;)

I'm still never entirely sure what does or does not count as a Power Ballad... most songs are ballads, and power (in this context) more or less means some guitar and drums with a bit of welly to them, so in my head pretty much any Rock song is a "Power Ballad", but apparently that isn't correct according to Power Ballad purists, so as far as I know there's only a couple of dozen songs that are actually Power Ballads... most of which have been chosen here thus confirming my suspicion that there really are only a handful and/or most everyone else was too afraid to venture outside the Safe Zone of "Certified Power Ballads" too.

I wouldn't say that most songs are ballads. To me a ballad is a slower or softer song. For example, Love Bites by Def Leppard is posted above. That's definitely a ballad as it's a slow tempo song, whereas Pour Some Sugar on Me or Animal are out and out rock songs.

Yeah I can just sorta tell when I hear a song if I would classify it as a Power Ballad or not. I can't really define it. A huge perm is generally a key condition

Yeah you know one when you hear it. 80's rock is not my favourite genre by any stretch, in fact, I recall saying rock music sucked in the 80's. Only heard the song I posted for the first time yesterday.

I usually have to go check on isthissongapowerballad.com* because I'm never sure. Like my initial thought was Rosanna by Toto for this category, but I'm not sure people would class that as a Power Ballad or not because I'm so unsure of what is or is not "allowed"... :pac:

A 'power ballad' doesn't necessity have to be a more powerful 'ballad'.

For LeVar – Power Ballad Primer

A power ballad is generally a slower tempo, often romantic song with a heavier musical backing than a traditional ballad. In addition it will feature some or all of the following:

    - Gentle, often acoustic start followed by a key change and a drum intro as song builds to a crescendo. Guitars may be substituted for drums.

    - Guitar solo. Non-negotiable, there must be a guitar solo.

    - Big hair. Hairspray budget should be equivalent to the entire military budget of a small country.

    - Jim Steinman. He’ll be in there somewhere, you probably just don’t realise it.

    - Soft-focus video featuring a very attractive young lady. May or may not be in various stages of undress. If featured in a storyline with the lead singer, she will clearly be well out of his league.

    - Rain. Quite often falling on the aforementioned attractive young lady.

    - Completely overblown musical production. There wasn’t a knob left unturned or a slider left unslid in the studio when it was being recorded.

    - When performed live, the song must be epic enough to make the entire crowd whip out their lighters immediately.

    - Cheese. Lots and lots of it. So much cheese that it'll induce weird dreams for several nights, not just one.

It is like that old american court case to classify the difference between art and pornography.
When the judge was asked how to define porn he said 'I will know it when i see it' :pac:

The thing that's really sticking out to me watching these videos is the haircuts.

    Jesus, they are absolutely chronic.

What was it about the 80's? Every other decade managed to get by with semi normal or at least cool looking hair, but, fck me, some of the monstrosities on display in these videos just beggar belief.

Ok, I will nominate a song as well. No perm/big hair, but Sebastian Bach has great long hair.
