    Ireland’s Own and Southern Star.

Both given as freebies before Christmas, both get shameless plugs on national radio today.

    Ireland’s Own and Southern Star.

Both given as freebies before Christmas, both get shameless plugs on national radio today.

What I have gotten from today's show is that Ryan does not like morbid talk. And that we should all get subs to Ireland's Own.

What prompted the Ireland's Own plug this morning.

Another over-emphasized “THAT”, followed by an “intriguing”.

Have a conf call at 9:30 so will miss the rest of today’s deliciousness.

Is it a book plug, a documentary plug, or just some oul lad reminiscing to feed Tubridy's Americana fetish?

    The lads should compare salaries.

He sounds like a cross between Henry Kissinger and Sean Connery.

He was pretending he feels connected to the famine yesterday, too.

Weird, cos about two weeks ago he was laughing at the idea of famine victims having to eat puffins.

Mr. Dowling has done incredibly well ....

    figures from 2017!
On the nonprofit side, Michael J. Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health, the New Hyde Park health care system and New York State's largest private employer, made $4.1 million in 2017, based on Northwell's most recently available tax return.

This is why i really don't like Tubridy.
He's the dictionary definition of sycophant.
If he had *any* interest in US politics and not the fawning and feigning he does every day, he could at least have alluded to the apparently dirty, corrupt and possibly unforgivably irresponsible current in-power Cuomo. I mean, it's actually topical. It would have been a bit interesting to hear Mr Wonderful (the guest) and what words he'd use to dismiss the allegations.

Here was an opportunity - but no, he can find time to have another go at that other idiot Trump.
This show should be on CNN or new idea for RTE - a new digital radio station -
    DNC Gold.

Stick Tubridy in his natural home and pay him in $

Yeah it's disgraceful that License Fee Payers such as myself have the cheek to question where our money is being spent, whether or not it's being spent wisely, and if we're getting value for it.

The abuse he got on Twitter was very mild - I've certainly received far worse on here in public and PMs. Someone in the public eye should have thicker skin.

He's not used to any form of negative criticism. All his life he's been told that he'll do well and he's been constantly pushed and promoted ahead of his ability, based on family connections.

So when someone points out that he's not good at what he does, or his show is going downhill, or his interviews are morbid, then he can't hack it. Instead of dealing with it, he comforts himself by calling them names ('trolls') or just shutting the door on them (quitting Twitter).

No doubt he has received personal abuse, but the majority of criticism of his performance is sober analysis.

I agree that he is totally lacking in ability, but am interested to know what family connections are responsible for his position in RTE. Is his continued employment not due to incompetent RTE management being unable to stand up to his agent?

Andrews heritage and family connections/Fianna Fáil all extremely potent at time he got on board. He also happened to be confident and articulate, so was at least initially a great fit for RTÉ, and indeed would have his own merits for getting a job somewhere in there although connections have always been important with RTÉ. It's just the extremely high pay which would be only commensurate with a far greater broadcasting talent.

it's like bluffing yourself into an engineers job with no qualifications, Ian dempsey predicted it on day one!!
All the interviews were like he's the new king "yes i'm a young fogie as they say, it's going to be like jimmy carson, and i'm doing it my way"
    then boom....found out

First time I ever actually heard him on the radio was as a reporter for Pat Kenny, the way Duffy was for Gaybo. He was volunteering to pose as a "stand-up comic" for some session in a hotel in Wicklow Street, telling us how he had never attempted any such thing before. Don't know how it went. All I remember was thinking, that guy has great belief in himself.

I did a quick online search. Tubridy's grandfather was Chairman of the RTE Authority between 1966 and 1970. Tubridy was born in 1973, his grandfather died in 1985, so it seems to me somewhat fanciful to suggest that the grandfather had any great impact on Tubridy's career in RTE.

If Tubridy's family's political connections were so influential, surely his much more talented cousin, David McSavage, son of former Minister for Foreign Affairs, David Andrews, would be the highest paid person in RTE.

None of the above takes away from the fact that Tubridy is stealing a living.

David Andrews (McSavage) is a loose canon, liable to say anything, about anyone including his own family as he did in the Olympia, which was last gig I attended before lockdown last March. They wouldn't let him near RTÉ except under very controlled circumstances, and I can't see them letting him on again any time soon, more's the pity for the lack of satire.

I'm not a huge fan of the way the programme has gone, and I don't know what the latest figures are, but 380,000 listeners maybe tells a different story?

    Just sayin ...

I'd actually think he has / had the ability to be a good broadcaster in the right area.

Like hes clearly ahead of D'arcy in technical ability, managing time and moving along segments and generally talking without too much humming and hawing - and I know questions are raised here about his preparation but I belive that he does more than Duffy (not saying it's a heroic amount but relatively speaking).

I think he is a victim of complacency. It's the same radio and tv shows every day and every week essentially. A few weeks ago some posters suggested formats for the show that would more maximise his strong areas and minimise his weaknesses and I think the radio show is salvageble if the will was there to mix it up a bit but I strongly suspect in 2, 3 or 4 years it could still be the same auld yarn every morning.
And why wouldnt it be? Hes making sick money to drop in around 7am, sort out the freebies etc and head off around 10 or 11am. I dont blame him for taking that deal, I know I would!  I would go along with your line of thinking that management is at fault here for not stopping the rot. Unsure of the extent of his agents influence but would guess that it is sizeable but of course I have no actual idea.

In terms of the posts relating to nepotism I was thinking perhaps cronyism would be a more appropriate word? Theres plenty family connections in the industry (like many others) but I dont know of any DIRECT hires as a result of nepotism but there is such strong overlaps between staff (some of whom are painfully limited in their ability), former staff members and individuals in powerful positions that some situations smell a bit off to me. I think it was last week he was speaking to a young broadcasting student about something and I remeber thinking to myself "by the time Tubridy was her age he had probably 4 years done in RTE and was already familiar to a good number of staff in there, good luck competing with comming in as an outsider from DIT with no connected relatives."
Of course I have no actual documents or statements from rte prove this (as one poster become obsessed with asking for before) but it's just my opinion from observing from the outside. Could be wrong.

The main issue I take with the show, and the persona Tubriy portrays every morning is the complacency and lack of willinging to try and be better.
I don't blame him for taking outrageous salary, that's on rte managements heads, but I do blame him for taking that much and not even bothering his arse. He still hasnt bothered to expand his knowledge about Irish Sport for instance (not knowing the hurling and football trophys names).
Even still that doesnt warrent personal abuse and no doubt hes gotten some unfortunately.

However, the ridiculoule of the current professional (not personal) persona I think is fair game in the morning.

The first, and I think better and more popular "young fogie" persona has been replaced by some type of arrrested development fantasy world Toyman persona that rubs many the wrong way. Also some real sly and negative traits shine through at times and I dont think its intentional.

There is the hypocrisy - haranging a singer he met on a street in New York for a photograph despite being declined, reading out the private correspondence of a deceased author after they were sold at auction - all when extolling people in the public eyes right to privacy.

The unintentionally flaunting his privileged life on a daily basis - sick money and still asking for freebies and asking a nurse who is homeschooling 3 children one of whom has special needs "where do you go for lunch".

The bullying - bald guy on the late late and shane lynch.

Then making out that anything other than blind praise online be considered as cruel trolls bullying etc and he is a victim just like McClean.

Sorry to go off on a rant but I'm 4 coffees deep which is a lot for me and I can type faster on the desktop than on my phone!  Just wanted to give some of the thinking behind my participation on the thread. If that makes me a troll and one of the nasty internet people then so be it. I dont think taking the piss out of some rediculous persona for a laugh makes me one and I dont think I say anything i wouldnt say to anyones face (in the appropriate fora, not a pub or anything lol). Theres some sharp and witty people on here and it gives me a good laugh most days and I think most people get it and dont cross the line into personal abuse.

This is fantastic. As a Mod I am always so glad of expansive commentary on the Ryan Tubridy Show. Not merely mud-slinging, but a reasoned little treatise on the subject of the Ryan Tubridy Show and how RTÉ and he are lacking motivation to change it.
