  • Ode to a Beatles Fan - “I am the ConMan”

I am rich as you are poor as you aren’t sure

    And we are not together

See how you run like pigs from a gun

    See how you fly

    I'm laughing

    Sitting on a corn flake

Waiting for the Merc to come

Montrose corpo T-shirt, stupid bloody Thursday

Man I’ve been a naughty boy

I let my face grow long

    I am the bad egg

    They are the good eggs

    I am the ConMan

    Goo goo g'joob

    Mister City Garda sitting

Pretty little Gardaí in a row

See how they fly like Lucy in the sky, see how they run

    I'm cringing, I'm cringing

    I'm cringing, I'm cringing

    Yellow matter custard

Dripping from a dead bird’s eye

    Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess

Boy, I’ve been a naughty boy, I’ve let my knickers down

    I am the bad egg

    They are the good eggs

    I am the ConMan

    Goo goo g'joob

    Sitting in an Monkstown garden

    Waiting for the sun

If the sun don't come you get a tan

From standing in the Irish rain

I am the bad egg (now good sir)

They are the good eggs (a poor man, made tame to fortune's blows)

    I am the ConMan

Goo goo g'joob, goo goo goo g'joob (good pity)

    Expert, texpert choking smokers

Don't you think the joker laughs at you (ho ho ho, hee hee hee, hah hah hah)

See how they smile like pigs in a sty, see how they snide

    I'm crying

    Semolina Pilchard

    Climbing up the Montrose Mast

    Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna

Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allen Poe

    I am the bad egg

    They are the good eggs

    I am the ConMan

Goo goo g'joob, goo goo goo g'joob

Goo goo g'joob, goo goo goo g'joob, goo

    Joob, joob, jooba

    Jooba, jooba, jooba

    Joob, jooba

    Joob, jooba

Umpa, umpa, stick it up your jumper (jooba, jooba)

Umpa, umpa, stick it up your jumper

    Everybody's got one (umpa, umpa)

Everybody's got one (stick it up your jumper)

    Everybody's got one (umpa, umpa)

Everybody's got one (stick it up your jumper)

    Everybody's got one (umpa, umpa)

Everybody's got one (stick it up your jumper)

    Everybody's got one (umpa, umpa)

Everybody's got one (stick it up your jumper)

    Everybody's got one (umpa, umpa)

Everybody's got one (stick it up your jumper)

    Everybody's got one (umpa, umpa)

What the hell were the paying this clown extra money for? He should be sacked. The Director General should be sacked and the Late Late Show should be ended, that Kielty guy can go back to bbc norn iron.

The carbon footprint thing is hilarious as well. RTE constantly telling us how bad the climate emergency is and they've agreed to pay for Kielty to fly over from London once a week for the LLS.

    Ryan's hidden gold,

    Beneath a crumbling facade,

    Housing cries unheard.

id say whatever remuneration deal they made with paddy Kielty based on published salary figures must be looking shaky now!

Af this point too would someone independently successful like PK still want to throw in their oar with this mess stinking the place up? RTE has dropped a lot in the credibility polls in the past 24 hours.

It should be seriously considered to dispense with RTE as a public entity. Strip it right down.

Rename it and its remit along with TG4 to provide public service content, news, investigative journalism and Irish language content covered by TG4. The licence fee should be used to fund it.

If the commercial arm of it makes money let it stand on its own feet like Virgin Media to produce the Late Late and celebrity bainisteoir and stars in their eyes and the mainstream sports etc without the license fee subsiding it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,583 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

The Late Late Show should be pulled. If it is to continue it shouldn’t be subsidised by the licence fee. It should be put on a commercial tv channel and this outdated public/private hybrid RTE system should be binned.

I’d be happy with that , rte needs to get more local

Listened to some of this show today - I didn't notice any sponsor 'sting'. Have Centreparks bailed out?

Modertor: with apologies for the delay, the thread is reopened.

I understand this is an emotive, infuriating issue, and has the makings of a serious scandal. However, there's no need for name calling. In fact, it undermines your point to round off an otherwise cogent post with such childishness.

When Ryan Tubridy saw the salaries of the top presenters in the newspapers over the years he clearly saw errors in his own salary as publicized. So why did he not address that at the time?

Put yourself in his position. What would you do? Wouldn't you contact whoever and say 'There seems to be a mistake there' and so on.

What is unclear and troubling is why he did not do that? Was there something he did not want to now about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,234 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

You are forgetting that 2019, he did an interview with the Irish Mirror and made a big show over his paycuts. He knew the figures were wrong, and went out of his way to mislead the public in 2019. Now I am sure some might make the case and that he was refering to earlier paycuts. But he isn't. Here is a direct quote

“I’ve taken a pay cut before. I took over 30% the last time and they’ve asked for more again which will bring it up to about 45% or (so) since I took the Late Late Show. When it comes to this sort of issue, that’s not something I’ve ever been found wanting in and that continues to be the case, yeah.”

He claimed he took an additional paycut in 2019, he hadn't. The implications I will leave up to you.

i wonder was Dave Mc Redmond of An Post’s application to become DG blocked by those who knew about this controversy?

Its looking more likely this thread will be consigned to history, as its going to be incredibly difficult for Tubs to come back to his slot.

The fact that he isn't an rte employee makes it easy for them to say, "sorry Ryan, we won't be needing you any more'.

Courtenay or Callan would be more than able for the spot, on a lot less money.

I think the public want heads to roll for this debacle. D 4orbes already gone anyway, so I think Tubs head will help smooth over the mess.

And nothing will be lost. It is a poor show, that anyone can host. 30 minutes of the newspapers, and an interview about illness for the remainder.

Give it to Oliver! Well deserved.

Dee Forbes isn't really 'gone' in the sense that she is losing her job though. She had effectively already left and was on leave until the end of her tenure. From a practical point of view, her suspension is posturing, but of no real consequence to her.

The timing of the statement from RTE is mightily convenient. It gave time for Dee to be gone, and for Ryan to have his big Late Late swansong. I would speculate that both were given a chance to get their respective houses in order before this landed, and any 'punishment' now will have little effect.

Good call NI, I’d give it to Callan but not anywhere near Tubs wedge

He seems to have learned to take the politics cuts out of it and in fairness seems very able to handle the task.

Courtney might be a bit too ‘high on his heels’ to appeal to ‘rural Ireland.

I’m sure callan wouldn’t expect that wedge for a few hours of his week 😂

He wouldn't say no though. He likes a few quid himself. He kicked up a right stink when his gigs were cancelled due to Covid.

In fairness, he accepted he was wrong afterwards.

No shortage of media people waiting 20 years to stick the boot into tubs , I’d say Shane Ross is going to get the slaps when Ryan catches him

Hmmm …that’s not how it works out in Montrosia Croc.

Like back in the day Gaybo was heading for the States when RTE doubled his wages to hold on to him.

Mike Murphy was the ‘second in command earner wise’ at the time .

Apparently Gaybo suggested to Mike to ensure the relativity wage gap resulting from his increase be maintained by Mike.

And apparently after negotiations it was….. that was the word on the street.

Im sure Ollie is aware of that……..

Perhaps there’ll be some reform in there in terms of a clear out of the ‘stars’ over the next few years? I’m mystified what Dara Mioliney does for his wedge. D’Arcy & Duffer are on air 5 days a week if that’s any justification. There aren’t soccer matches 5 dads a week. I’m not even suggesting being kn air 5 days a week justifies 300,000+ p/an either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,719 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

I'm sure even the top weather presenters (I know they work for Met Éireann) who do their normal 40 hours essential work all day and then do unsocial hours presenting the reports for RTE would would be lucky to earn even 25% of what Tubs, Duffy etc get.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,630 ✭✭✭squonk

True. They need to dispense with outside contractors for long term on air contracts and keep everyone internal. I don’t see any reason why it can’t be set to public service pay grades like every other public service job. At the end of the day you get a job got like, a pension and health insurance. You don’t like it, there’sa private sector out there. Make it like any other job where you trade off some things for Kevin sector advantages and vice versa. Nobody in RTE is really that spectacular right now that they deserve extra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,700 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

    Aaah heeeyur!

Lets not deify these as well, they tell us the weather on tv, how big a deal is that.

And I know they are highly qualified at their own job….forecasting the weather.

what will it be next… the traffic and travel mob being deified because they announce on radio.

Lost the run of ourselves here .

I have no doubt that had the question of why do you (and by extension we) need to pay these people large 6 figure salaries been asked of RTÉ last week, or any other time prior to this, we'd have gotten an eloquent version of 'pay peanuts, get monkeys'. Well 440k (plus an undeclared €75k) got us a guy who can't even be bothered checking what date it is prior to going on air.

They should be tied to the civil service pay scale definitely, and if the "talent" have a problem with it no doubt the private sector will eagerly take them on. I've no doubt private companies will have no problem paying Claire Byrne 6 figures to talk about what goes in what bin or Joe Duffy paid the same to act like a petulant child if someone says something he doesn't like. Edit: and let's not forget Ray D'Arcy, 6 figures to forget, on an almost daily basis, what that button does or when to press it.
