Taoiseach warning restaurants and bars could be closed until the end of May.

Disappointing, I thought we might see a phased reopening of pubs / restaurants with food service and strict social distancing long before then. There is a really pessimistic tone coming from Government today, multiple senior politicians briefing that strict restrictions are here until late spring or early summer.

Restaurants and bars could stay closed until the end of May, says Taoiseach
Restaurants and bars could stay closed until the end of May, Taoiseach Micheál Martin, has warned.

    ...

The head of the body representing restaurateurs in Ireland conceded it was "highly probable” that restaurants and hotels will remain closed until the start of May.

Adrian Cummins, CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, said the key date for his industry was now the bank holiday weekend at the start of May.

Ireland nowhere near ready to ease level five restrictions - Varadkar
“I think it is fair to say we are nowhere near where we need to be at present to ease Level Five restrictions.

“But, of course, that doesn’t mean that schools can’t open in February and there is, of course, the possibility of opening more construction sites because they are not supposed to be closed in normal Level Five.”

So All hospitality to remain closed until May seems to be probable now.
By extension there will probably be no let up on travel either beyond county bounds unless for exceptional circumstances.

Schools to reopen after mid term in February along with construction.

Non essential retail probably to reopen around middle of March with sporting activities possibly at that point as well.

It's looking that way. I was hoping we could see a big reprieve for the hospitality sector from early summer onwards, especially when it comes to weddings. However now we could have a situation where the numbers allowed might only increase from 6 to 25 by the start of June.

I was hopeful by that stage we could be looking at increasing numbers from 50 to 100. Huge difference for the hospitality sector between having 100 at a wedding as opposed to 25 in attendance.

Will we have to wear masks in shops in summer 2021 even though we didn't have to in summer 2020 and there were nearly no cases/deaths every day?

Hopefully not. They should let us take them off from Spring until Fall when barely anyone gets sick during those months. Give us a break from them. Especially intend to make us wear them again come Winter.

Why would we have to wear them once everyone is vaccinated?

    They'll find a reason.

The reopening of the country will be decided by the UK, the EU, Irish businesses and the self-employed. NPHET don't want to re-open ever, the Government don't want to take responsibility for anything, hence why they gave NPHET such prominence, they will both have to be dragged kicking and screaming along with the lockdown merchants. There's already a sizeable amount of people who are ignoring level 5 and continuing to work and socialise.

I worry that semi-lockdown and mask wearing will become the norm in Dec,Jan,Feb when the crisis is finally over.

How come the mood is so bleak even though we have multiple vaccines being distributed and administered throughout Ireland, Europe and the world as we speak? While we had the most restrictive measures throughout Europe during the summer, there was an air of normality at times. Why the long-term pessimism? Surely we just need to get over next few weeks and then things will begin to look clearer.

It's like Covid 2.0. The old Covid wasn't that bad really; it's the British and South African variants now that justify the lockdowns. Imagine we had no vaccine. Our lives are **** now but imagine how long this could potentially have gone on for?

Ultimately it might be that people will have to protest against this. Or just not comply.

Or vote for politicians who promise that this won’t happen.

I'd be surprised if this wasn't the case, but it won't be anything to do with the government making them compulsory like some people suggest.
It may even be public health advice in the future, but that's all it will be...advice.

I could definetly see my workplace making it policy. I'll go somewhere else if that's the case.

Considering the initial lockdown went from 2 weeks ["2 weeks to flatten the curve.", "The next 2 weeks are crucial." anyone?] and was stretched out for three months and then they can't let us have 5 minutes of freedom without talking about the next lockdown ever since.

Yeah, thinking they'll find a reason to keep the masks and lockdowns going once everyone is vaccinated is crazy conspiracy theorytalk.

What does a government have to gain by making people wear masks?
Yes it is crazy conspiracy theory talk. What else would it be?

Let's hope we see 3Arena concerts return during/after the summer. A small issue that may affect us is the current mess in the UK with them planning not to give visiting visas to touring bands/crew etc. Would bands really bother coming to us if they cant tour in the UK ?

    Well said.

NPHET has a single focus; To rid Ireland of CV19.
Led by a Dr. Holohan, the man who advised the the health minister not to have an external body investigate the CervicalCheck scandal as it would damage public trust. He's doctor turned marketeer.

They are not concerned with cancer, heart disease, alcoholism, suicide, violence, employment or people's happiness. They have their mission objective and that's that.

A vaccine, strong leadership and most importantly, public pressure will take us out of this mess.
