A blizzard in athlone and shes sticking. Myself and the kids are glued to the lamppost watching. Hopefully it still there in the morning for snowmen. First decent bit of snow for my youngest who is 3. He is amazed

Expecting the first window of any precipitation heading eastwards Meath/Dublin to be rain initially, before a transition to snow after 2am

Would be surprised if it started as rain. Below freezing here in central Meath.

Interesting the wind is from the east and the snow arriving from the west. I think that is a good sign re circulation and pivoting of the front.

My 8 year old asked me did I make the snow come? I couldn't take the credit for such disappointing product. He said it was his favourite type of weather, should I let him down slowly now or let him figure it out as he gets older...

    Shows Corks issue, onshore wind!!

Waterford and Wexford may have the same issues in the next few hours aswell

In fact any windward coastal areas until tomorrow evening should be aware of what happened in Cork this evening. :(

Temp up to 1.3c ahead of the front. Thinking rain for here now with that onshore wind. Seems that way on meteociel radar.

    Carlow looking the sweet spot

the front is moving across much quicker than I expected, precipitation getting close to Meath/Kildare already. Could be rain/snow by 10.30/11pm.

Decent snow now, blowing around in the breeze. Small flakes but settling on cold to near freezing ground.

Looking at the radar and regarding the Midlands, it looks like the snow has reached portlaoise and Tullamore but has yet to get to Mullingar.

Feels to me that the temps are rising in my part of Carlow. Last night/today was much colder.

Radar shows precipitation overhead but its bone dry albeit cloudy.

    Still I sit and wait.

The cat finally got off my lap so I could go and have peek out of the window. I was not expecting that - not at all...

I'd estimate 3-4cm on the paving, and it really crunches and squeeks underfoot. The moon glow is pretty bright, allowing the photos. In the distance I can hear the voices of kids out having fun. Magic.
