also forgets Bill Clinton took a deal to avoid his own court case:

"The extraordinary case came to an extraordinary finale, with the defendant agreeing to pay $850,000 even though the plaintiff originally only asked for $700,000 when she filed suit -- and even though the case was dismissed without a trial."

That's $1.6 Million today. And Clinton was certainly guilty in the court of public opinion, regularly lampooned on cartoons for projecting sexual truancy, and often referred to by detractors even on Boards across time as Slick Willie. He was also impeached for an illicit affair with his WH intern, Monica Lewinsky, and that whole bag of worms.

They don't seem to think the secret service are up to their job obviously.

Funny given the attacks trump supporters are known for, you would imagine that Fox News would be concerned and expressing said concerns regarding the safety of Biden going on his advertised visits to various areas around the states.

and thats why its innocent till proven guilty

this case has a long way to run with many potential twists and turns

Their conclusion is a sound one, that this case's judicial questions and Trumps penchant for maximum appeal and motion to delay that we definitely won't see New York v. Trump wrap up before the election next year.

    Thats a good article.

This case is purely political, to try and weaken Trump for the Presidential election next year, thats its primary purpose.

It might make him stronger though, probably not enough to win him the election as that will come down to ~6 swing states, but it will make things more interesting.

    Dont poke the bear.

Not what the article said, no.

Didn't work for John Edwards (or in the long run for Hillary, vis. Bill)

Here Fox News gets ready to witness Trump's airing of grievances which looks set to pop off in mere minutes with Eric Ivanka and USSS showing up.

Don enters to "Proud to be an American" blasting on the PA. Nice of him to acknowledge "I'm free" having spent no time in police custody, contrary to his mug shot merch.

Seems kind of boring and he shows signs of not even proofreading his own teleprompter speech.

'whatabout nuclear weapons?' 🤣 I'm out and I see PBS and other networks are also pulling out as he pivots off of Bragg to 'the economy' and 'democrat run cities' - it's no Gettysburg Address. Shame for him really because this speech is probably the biggest platform he's going to have for months (hell even I tuned in).

Well this was quite the schadenfreude - including fun facts like Trump chose to be arraigned in person, the court gave him the option 'just like Jesus and Nelson Mandela' to be arraigned in West Palm beach via Zoom.

A democracy becomes a laughing stock when it doesn't follow up on prosecuting cases against individuals just because they happened to previously hold a high office. You show that your democracy and laws are on sound foundation by going after wrongdoing by anyone, regardless of titles.

Rick Wilson/Lincoln Project captured some of the biggest eyerolls of the day

    "He waved.

"He waved once to the cameras,

    "to the crowd,

    "and, in a sense,

    "he's waving goodbye

"to the republic that once was" 😂

    On a side note.

“BREAKING: in a overweighted defeat for Trump Republicans, Janet Protasiewicz defeated Daniel Kelly for Wisconsin Supreme Court.”

So you think this is all part of a political ploy to get at Trump. And in all this nefarious planning, involving senior people across multiple areas, you think that none of them would have thought that this might actually help Trump?

Because what, they weren't aware he had such a cult following and the GOP would get behind him no matter what?

    But you know.

  • Registered Users Posts: 470 ✭✭archermoo

So are you saying that you think all politicians are regularly breaking the law and that up until now they've just been allowed to get away with it? And that what, charging Trump broke some kind of unwritten agreement that politicians are above the law?

Trump has been indicted because the New York DA has enough evidence that he committed 34 felonies that a grand jury voted to indict him on all of those charges. If there is sufficient evidence against other politicians that they have committed crimes then that evidence should be submitted to a grand jury in the appropriate jurisdiction. No one should be above the law. The only thing political about Trump having been indicted is the idea that since he used to be President he shouldn't be held accountable for his crimes.

His followers know that trump wants to be like other dictators around the world and through their following/worship of this guy, they have been trained to think that there's nothing wrong with their leader being above the law.

He has normalised this for them.

But only where he is concerned.

That's only where the person who is acting this way is doing so in furtherance of what they want. They are happy to look the other way.

Hell, they'll even throw money at the guy even when they know deep down he is lying to them.

But if there's a whiff, even artificially, of any illegality by someone they don't agree with, well then that's entirely different.

They have no problem summarily convicting Hillary, Joe Biden or Hunter Biden, Pelosi, Pence, Barr, McCarthy, McConnell - whoever criticises "their guy".

That's why there will always be a reluctance to accept facts and an overwhelming urge to look the other way/deflect.

    Serious question time.

Is wearing fake tan and trying to look like trump a punishment trump inflicts on his subordinates, or is it a choice by them to do so?

Im not going to pretend I know that much about the ins and outs of this case, because I dont.

Some posters here, seem to be saying that this is some kind of witch hunt against Trump and are basing this on Trump making a simple book keeping error in one case.

However as far as I can make out these charges seem to show a whole litany of falsifying the books and trying to cover it up to help Donny look better. Doesn't seem to be a case of one simple error to me, or am I missing something?

This has probably been covered earlier on the thread, but it's a big thread and I'm playing catch up:

All these shenanigans (other than the classified docs) are caused by Trump using campaign funds to pay the hush money, and falsify said documentation trail?

If Trump had paid this directly from his own pocket, there'd be no felony?

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

  • Registered Users Posts: 470 ✭✭archermoo

No. As if often the case in this kind of situation the fact that he tried to cover up the payment is where at least most of the problem came in. Which is why he has been charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records. He has been indicted for trying to cover up the payments, not for having made them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

An interesting side note is it seems Trumps real height and weight have finally publicly been revealed and shock horror he is not the 6'3 239 pound all star athlete hes previously claimed. But we already knew that considering in pictures he appears shorter than the likes of Trudeau who is 6'2 and the same height as Obama who is 6'1.

Not to mention him being 6'3 and 239 pounds puts him along side some impressive looking athletes.....

Now many of his supporters will say "so what" or "Its not a big deal" etc

But this just adds to the evidence he lies about literally everything. Also if the stats from yesterday are true, of 6'1 and 270 pounds, according to the CDC he has moved from being simply overwieght to being clinically obese, which again is unsurprising but nice to have confirmed something our eyes have been telling us for quite a while now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,604 ✭✭✭✭Penn

It's part of what makes the case pretty complex; Trump did use his own money (or rather, money from his businesses) rather than explicitly using campaign money. However, the reason why they made the payments as part of trying to cover up the Stormy Daniels affair was because it the affair became public, it would damage his Presidential campaign.

And so the payment could be deemed to be money Trump spent on his own campaign, and therefore was improperly declared, as well as the numerous cases of falsifying business records to cover it. It was Cohen who paid off Daniels, but was then reimbursed by Trump through various false means of payments for legal retainer or other expenses which weren't true.

So even without the campaign stuff there could still be charges relating to falsifying business records. That's my reading on it anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,858 ✭✭✭Rawr

I believe that's the jist of it. It's the falsification of payment records which is a crime in New York. The Trump Organisation itself has been up to similar shenanigans over the years, and have been detected doing it. But this is the first time in a while that Trump is suspected of personally doing it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,191 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

In fairness, he may well weigh 239lbs. but there's a huge (pardon the pun) difference between 239lbs of fat and 239lbs of trained muscle.

They've been doing that for years and with Clinton before that and they haven't found anything.

There's a very simple reason that none of them have been charged for all the things that Republicans say they should be charged for.

They have not avoided prosecution because the GOP have taken some kind of moral stand (as if) and decided not to go after them because of some kind of political precedent.

It's because there is no evidence and they are not guilty of any of the things that the GOP claim.
