I genuinely want to understand how banning books, sacking or muzzling teachers in terms of what they can discuss in class and attacking Companies or individuals that disagree with your policies could possibly be viewed as "defending free speech" ??

To be honest the current GOP version of freedom seems very much to be "You are free to do whatever you want as long as it is exactly consistent with our specific set of values"

If you can go elsewhere to buy the books, which you can, then they are not banned. Poor attempt at a gotcha there I'm afraid. And ya, teachers should keep their personal lives to themselves. Its the parents choice to make, not ideological 20 year old + teachers who have no qualification to teach such topics. This is a very centrist viewpoint to have and not exclusive to florida.

Teachers are not allowed to even acknowledge the existence of a homosexual person , they are not allowed to say Slavery was bad , they are not allowed to say that the internment of thousands of Japanese Americans was bad, among many other things.

In the modern GOP worldview , America has always been awesome , everything has always been sunshine and lollipops and everyone is a gun loving, god fearing heterosexual and absolutely no one is allowed to even suggest that anything has ever been any different.
