I have a theory that Trump and the modern day GOP will only promote someone who has the proverbial skeleton in their closet.

That way, they can be controlled with the threat to play ball, or else.

Skeletons in closets aren't what they used to be though.

We sat again for an hour and a half discussing maps and figures and always getting back to that most damnable creation of the perverted ingenuity of man - the County of Tyrone.

Fantastic, although its a bit sad that we wont be subject to his absolute ridiculousness anymore.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,594 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

So Santos lies to get himself elected and gets kicked out of the house. Tellingly, the majority of GOP didn't vote to expel him.

But what is the difference between Santos lying and Trump? Santos must be feeling pretty hard done by

It would have to be one whopper of a skeleton. I mean, Trump accused of numerous sexual assaults, sleeping with porn stars, watersports in Russian hotels, fraud and insurrection, and he's still the poster boy.

    Its like in Blackadder.

    Blackadder: Now then; criminal record...

    Baldrick Absolutely not.

Blackadder Oh, come on, Baldrick, you're going to be an MP, for God's sake! I'll just put fraud and sexual deviancy. Now; minimum bribe level...

^^That used to be a joke, now its a reality.

At this point the skeleton would have to be that the person really IS as squeaky clean as they pretend to be.

The Speaker and other House GOP leaders voted to keep him in Congress. They have absolutely zero moral compass. Disgusting shower.

Well - Hard for them to vote him out for lying when they do it themselves about the 2020 election and the "Biden Crime family" etc. etc.

As awful as Santos is , is he really worse or a bigger threat to the system than inveterate liars like Comer and Jordan??

If they don't go with Newsom, they deserve to lose to Trump.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭amandstu

    Clearly a lesser threat.

I wonder if the slimmer majority might be consequential if it strengthens small caucuses within the "GOP"

American Liberalism is so tangled up in itself, there's no way the Democrats will risk the optics of replacing a black woman with a white man, no matter how well regarded Newsom. Even if he's the right candidate the American Left never misses a chance to eat its own tail; though that said, Harris does seem singularly unpopular as VPs go.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭nachouser

Two months old or so I know, but hey. He seems like a pretty sensible guy. They're f*cked if they don't go with him as a back-pocket VP to replace Biden.

If Biden dumped Harris, Fox News would suddenly become America's greatest advocates of racial diversity in politics.

Or maybe he meant what he said. Given his use of terms like Communist, Fascist, etc to mean whatever he wants them to mean, maybe actual words don't matter, all he needs is a few dog whistles and his word salad drone in-between.

I presume what he meant to say was a war in the sense of MAGA protecting it - but, yeah. The subconscious probably snuck through there.

He clearly has some cognitive issues, whether it's age related or simply the rumoured cocktail of drugs he's taking in lieu of sleep.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,714 ✭✭✭✭briany

I listened to that clip with more context and it sounds like he was talking about his political opponents accusing him of waging war on American democracy, or him accusing them of same, but in his usual rambling trip-over-words way.

Dumb, yes. Freudian slip? Possibly. But I'd rather people focus on the things where he stone-cold knew what he was saying, and can't really wriggle out of it by claiming left-wing/liberal hysteria. I still find it chilling that he said in 2020 that the only way he was going to lose the election was if it was rigged. He was knowingly undermining faith in the democratic process, and sowing the seeds of public disorder for no other reason than his ego. That was pretty dystopian.

Doug Burgum is out. Weird that Asa Hutchinson is still in, he may be angling for a cabinet position. Next up is Christie and Ramaswamy. I could see Christie stay in it just to raise the profile of Trump's toxicity amongst the moderates and undecided, but doubts are there on whether he'll meet the polling requirements for the next debate. If he doesn't, I'd say that will be his cue to fold. Ramaswamy is definitely not in this for the presidency. He's most likely in it to sell Kushner inspired access to the WH and add to his profile and wealh. I can't see him folding, unless he is asked to by DJT. RDS is going to have to fold if Haley is going to have any sort of chance against Trump. Ron dropping out will give her momentum, but I'd be fairly certain many of the De Santis voters would vote for Trump over Haley.
