Polling with the RDS supporters has always indicated that Trump is their 2nd choice after Ron, while polling for Trump has indicated Ron would be their 2nd choice. The issue for Haley is she has consolidated the nevertrump base in the party which is maybe 15-20% and that is been optimistic but then what?

RDS and Vivak supporters will just vote Trump and the rest don't really matter.

Even when Tim Scott quit, it was broke down where his supporters would go and it was relatively evenly spread between Trump, Haley and Ron.

Its very similar to 2016, Cruz could have beaten Trump if the others had dropped out as it was clear he understood the base better than all bar Trump but ego would not allow it and Trump won. Kasich, Rubio and Christie all should take some blame for Trump winning.

I sense at this point that most candidate camps secretly ran on the slim hope that Trump would die or get seriously ill, get struck off the ballot, get jailed, or drop a supergaffe that would herald a 'enough is enough' moment with the GOP support, but the likelihood of any of that happening is getting slimmer by the day.

I believe Biden will win, and win well. However, one of the major hurdles to overcome is getting that message out across the divide when nobody credible within the GOP or the GOP candidates attacks Trump. The republican voters are tuned into news networks that can not commercially dare to criticise Trump for fear of losing revenue, so the strategy to get that message to traditional republican voters, from the Biden camp needs to be smart, and well thought out in a strategic sense. This election, on paper is a ridiculously easy election to win. I believe that Democratic strategists are part intimidated, and other parts complacent in the battle to keep the orange idiot from getting re-elected, and they can afford to be neither at this juncture.

Complacency will definitely be a big danger, as well just a general sense of jadedness from independent voters who may think Trump is horrible but just feel no excitement towards Biden either and be completely disillusioned with political division in their country. Although Biden is far from the most exciting candidate imaginable, he did have a decently inspiring message in 2020 about bringing back some air of civility to politics. I don't know if that's really come about under his tenure, and not because he's been uncivil, but because he can't really control the continued descent of the Republican party into a conspiracy theorist convention. So Biden will have base his campaign at least in part on, "Fúck me, isn't Trump terrible?", and he'd be right about that, but it's just not a very hopeful tone to strike.

There's also the age thing. Trump is almost as old as Biden, but manages to somewhat distract from it by being a big ball of weird hair, jowly tan face and insane word salads. And his supporters would vote for him if he were 102 because Trumpism is a cult of personality. Actually, they'd still vote for Trump even if he'd died, Kim Il Sung style.

There's also the fact that the 2020 election happened against the backdrop of a generational pandemic and a real sense of urgency to get Trump out of office or else got knows what would happen, because he was mishandling the pandemic in a truly spectacular fashion.

I do fear that the 2024 US general will be dark and brutal in a way we haven't really seen before.

RDS I think was the only candidate who initially ran with the sole intention of winning by running to the right of Trump ala Cruz in 2016 but obviously for many reasons its not really happened for him. The others obviously want to win, but most from day 1 would have an eye on a role in a Trump administration most notably VP mainly Haley and Scott. Vivek ran to raise his profile with MAGA by essentially acting as a Trump stand in on stage while Christie ran to bait Trump and nothing more.

The rest, probably boredom most notably Doug Burgam who despite been a governor nobody outside his state knew who he was bar political nerds.

Trump is a very brittle man who takes any sort of criticism poorly, but while he has spent an absolute fortune on nuking RDS, the rest bar a few jibes on truth social he has ignored which tells its own story.

Nonetheless yeah everyone knows its going to take something wild for Trump not to get the nomination now.

On Tuesday, Speaker Mike Johnson unequivocally admitted that the conservative party is doctoring footage of the January 6 insurrection to prevent the identification of the rioters in an investigation by the Justice Department.

“We have to blur some of the faces of persons who participated in the events of that day because we don’t want them to be retaliated against and to be charged by the DOJ,” Johnson said.

“That’s a slow process to get it done, we’re working steadily on it. We’ve hired additional personnel to do that and all of those tapes ultimately will be out so everybody can see them and draw their own conclusions,” he added.

So.. "Make your own minds up , but we are also going to openly obstruct justice".

What a fúcking opening paragraph for any newspaper to print about a former American president; Corporate Politics is endemic and toxic, but the patina of the democratic principle still held firm. Here's a candidate simply saying "I will rule you all".

Clearly the "part of law and order" is really meant to mean "the party of [our] law [to] order [you all to obey]".

The DOJ already has all the footage as do all the various law authorities.

It's all just so pointless and performative, but the message it sends is dangerous.

This activity is performance art to let the MAGA loons know that the GOP "have their backs" and that they condone and support their actions on the day and that should they feel the need to do it again next year the GOP won't lift a finger to stop them.

Even though the DOJ already have the footage, wouldn't blurring people's faces before releasing the footage mean that people wouldn't be able to identify rioters who the DOJ may not have been able to identify? Such as someone recognising a neighbour as one of the rioters and then alerting the DOJ about them?

I agree it's mostly just performative and a signal to MAGA that they're being supported, but there is definitely a level of obstruction of legal investigation in what they're doing too.

Absolutely - Completely removes the "crowd-sourced" element of the identification process.

It's also saying to the MAGA world that the "deep state" can't be trusted so they need to protect them from the nasty DOJ that would prosecute them for doing nothing wrong etc.

It's just appalling behaviour from an allegedly law abiding democratic political party.

It also signals that they are all 100% on-board with trying all the same horseshit after the next Election to try and steal it if they don't win.

The Republicans have set out their stall with Mike Johnson and Trump; they want demagogue dictator backed by a Christian nationalist government where the bible is law.

If the Republicans win the presidency, house and senate together in the run of votes over the next few years, they will dismantle the US constitution to the point that the US no longer will be a democracy but a Christian version of Afghanistan, and they will at some stage in 20 after that launch a Holy War in the name of their peace-loving God.

There's no two sides in this anymore; Democrat votes are now a vote for democracy, Republican votes are a vote for the end of the US and for the appointment of a "God chosen" king to rule.

I dont understand why he wasn't called out immediately on this by someone in attendance. So that he didn't have a chance to weasel out of it. The media needs to stop being like a crowd of nodding dogs and actually call these people out, and treat them as they deserve to be treated. I think he was speaking at some right-wing event so a "safe space" as it were for him.

It wasn't a regular press conference with actual journalists were present.

But in general I agree with you , these guys should be chased down at every opportunity and made to explain in painful detail why they are doing and saying the things that they are.

The media do attempt, but they get shouted down, removed from the event, not invited, or called the enemy of the people and those that don't like what they say ignore them. Trump was amazingly successful in getting so many people to completely disregard what they see and hear based on it being on the MSM.

So for many, a reporter pointing something out is waved away as MSM lies.

The thing is that he's not actually "obstructing justice" - The DOJ and everyone else that needs it have already had all the unedited footage for quite some time.

So he's actions are purely those of self-preservation - He's releasing the footage to placate the Conspiracy nutters who want to conjure up evidence of some deep state plot and then he's redacting/blurring the footage to appear to protect the MAGA seditionists that were in attendance on January 6th.

He's guilty of being a spineless turd and guilty of driving further distrust in Government and the rule of law , but he probably hasn't broken any actual laws that result in charges being brought (even if the political will to do so existed).

It's a raging dog whistle to the MAGA sect that "he's got their back" and that the GOP House will bend over backwards to facilitate them breaking any laws they wish in pursuit of the MAGA promised land...

To be honest , as each block of blurred footage gets released by Johnson , the DOJ should just release the unedited footage along side it..
