I guess Trump likes the song, but it wouldn't surprise me if he knew little else of it like the song meaning or cultural significance beyond its use in his campaign.

But it's a bizarre little coda. Such a frivolous song to bookend a highly controversial presidency.

It's always been a joke to Trump.

Lovely to see thousands of flags representing those that died in the pandemic fluttering in the wind for the inauguration.

Our could it represent those that voted for Biden who had died?

Ted Cruz should have been told to f*ck right off when he arrived at the door of the Capitol.

The neck of him turning up to this.

Cruz well knows the contempt Biden has for him, that's enough.

  • I'm pointing out the weirdness of religion in American politics. Biden going to mass on the morning of his inauguration during a pandemic underlines this weirdness. It's a tradition for American presidents to do this, it's almost part of the inauguration process, even though America is supposed to have a separated church and state.

All speeches include god and prayer.

Politicians there are afraid to say they aren't religious for fear of losing votes. It's a mad country.

It certainly is. A lot is made of the Bible Belt but ultimately it's an entire country of Bible thumpers.

Even when Bernie was running he had to come up with some religious nonsense saying that faith still shaped his world view or something along those lines.

If you come out as atheist you can head straight home.

Eugene Goodman getting the applause he rightly deserves. Even now he still looks stoic and on sentry.

If Biden accepts gay marriage, abortion, then he doesn't adhere to Catholic beliefs.

Trump not attending the inauguration just sums him up, a bitter man with a very fragile ego.

Probably depends on a few different things. Biden is only standing for one term and they might decide that giving Harris one year by him stepping down early will improve her chances in 2024.

A lot of it is in Puritan roots. The Puritans were/are a form of protestant that's particularly interested in Godly, bread-and-water lifestyles. This is why you still have weird attitudes to alcohol in the US - being drunk means you're an alcoholic, you can have a car at 16 but can't drink till 21, etc. As well as other remnants.

The puritans weren't the only group to arrive in North America, but they were the most successful educators and breeders and thus influenced the early development of the US to a massive extent. Influence which can still be widely seen today.

It's why the US has such an intermix of insanely liberal ideas and insanely conservative ones.

At the core of the puritanical message though is God and devotion to God. And no matter how fvcked up an individual is, no matter how many other men they may have tortured and killed, how many women and children they've raped and killed, you will still hear them give devotion to God. In the US, atheists rank somewhere between murderers and peados on the scale of evil. That's how messed up the country is by the early puritans.
