US Dept of Treasury Cheque

Wondering if anyone can guide me?
As a US citizen I received an Economic Impact Payment as a cheque from the Dept of Treasury last Spring. I moved back to Ireland many years ago and do not have a bank account there. However, my bank (TSB) or credit union wont accept it. I have also made enquiries to BOI and AIB and the answer seems to be the same.

I'm hoping there is someone out there who can advice me.

Why not call the US consulate and ask them for advice on this one. They should know and are there to assist US Citizens.

Sorry I don’t have any direct experience. I have a colleague here in Switzerland who got one of these cheques too. And he could not find a single Swiss bank willing to touch it for him.

As I understand it they cannot be processed through the normal channels.

Have you any relations left in the US (that you sufficiently trust!!) that you could send the cheque to to lodge on your behalf and then send you the money? Or can only the named person cash it?

You can send the cheque back to the IRS (registered mail) and then claim it as Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 tax return.

And giving that the 2020 return is due soon that might be a nice way of having less to pay.
