20 inches - for standard or subsonic rimfire ammo where muzzle velocities are around 1100 fps or less.

18 inches - for high-velicity rimfire ammo where muzzle velocities are around the 1300 fps mark.

16 inches - for "extreme" high velocity rimfire ammo (i.e. Stinger) where muzzle velocities are 1500+ fps.

Still, there are others who say that a barrel length as short as 14 inches provides "optimal" length and accuracy in the .22 rimfire. I am wondering, however, what great a variety of rimfire ammo they used in their testing of a 14-inch barrel; the muzzle velocity spreads for each, the range distance of the target, etc.

I quoted the above from the link. I'd say everything else being equal go with the 20" for the additional weight. I've a Lux with a 24.8" barrel, I'd say you'd be hard pressed tell the difference between it and a 16" barrel with a mod.

That's one of the threads I read, yes seems 20" be the way to go. Some good points about if 14-16" barrels were most accurate anschutz would be using them in their world stage rifles and every nrl22 comp in the states would feature 16" barrel rifles. But they don't!

But it's always good to get local advise, in case our climate affects that for some weird physics based reason!

What length barrel did you get? Seems to be available 16" or 20"

I went with the 16inch barrel. Based on weight for carrying. It looks ridiculously short, as if it had a sawn off job done. Looks ok with mod. So far I've only used subs, 1040ft/s in it. Can't fault it.Would love to have a deer rifle as compact.

I watched RACKNLOAD on YouTube, he did an initial review of a 16" model, then a follow on after fitting an MDT Chassis, mod and mod cover, looks badass!

So I have been getting ready to pull the trigger (excuse the pun) on a T1x and for sh*ts and giggles I said I'll measure the 452.

Just was curious to see how the tikka will compare for the hard case I have currently. Holy moly, the 452 has a 23.5" barrel! I would have said it was 20!

So yes a 16" in an oryx chassis would look crazy. 20" it is for sure.

Before you jump, CZ 452 option available on this setup, dunno about getting it here though:

They are nice! Dang it! Really nice looking.

But I think I'm on the same issue, as txmgo have not responded to any emails about export aside from yes we can do it. And their website crapped itself when I tried paying for the MDT export.

Apparently iTar are clamping down hard on anything not fully approved for leaving the USA.
I'd be wary of them just shipping the chassis out with no export paperwork and getting an empty box here!

I bought the tikka T1 for non range use. My original consideration was we could progress to a T3 stalking rifle and run the two twins side by side. Especially as my sidekick is a long way of stalking on his own. While waiting on it, my further research allowed me to consider other possibilities, like putting a chassis stock under it for competition... The same chassis will work for the T3, so the possibilities just keep expanding, without a monster budget. Truth be told, it'll be left stock, and be used for rabbits and practice for a future T3.
It's great to have such great rifles, tikka cz or bergara, available to use off the shelf, without being told, they're great once you change the trigger, stock, bolt, magazine etc.
Keep us posted on your choices and progress

Thanks for that info! I agree the choice of excellent off the shelf rifles is brilliant, they all work without any major investment. While budget still becomes a factor (I'd have bought a Bergara but I don't have that sort of pony right now) the 'budget' offerings are wonderful.

I've told my RFD who I got the cz from to get the tikka. I'll trade in the cz, keep the wife happy with just the 1 gun in the house.

Mee-hole just on news talking about schools closed until march possibly now so that will probably mean everything else including ranges so I'm in no rush.

But I will post a few pics when it arrives! Hopefully I'm not waiting an eternity for the sub to be processed. Fingers crossed lads!

I have the T1x in 17hmr. 16" barrel but obviously when you add the moderator (depending on the type) you will have another 4-5 inches. Lovely gun to handle, very light with the synthetic stock and also the adjustable trigger. I'm glad I got the 16". It would benefit from a decent chassis though. Just my tuppence worth.
    You'll love the Tikka

I see dolphin rifles in the UK are now selling semi custom 22lr rifles.
They have the cz457 action with a lilja barrel in their own stock.
I'd want a bravo stock though.
I'm going to ring them Monday to get some prices.

MDT XRS is another option for the CZ.

They look to be a very good stock and the aluminium backbone runs the full length of the rifle.
They are about 1lb heavier and a bit longer than the bravo though .
The bravo probably suits me better as I would be using the rifle for hunting as well.
Might just buy a T1x and stick it in a bravo.

    Serious question:

    Is it teek-a or tick-a?

  • Registered Users Posts: 279 ✭✭kunekunesika

    Teek----ka
You have to speak like Mika hakkenen. Big pause in the middle, then nearly spit the Ka.
Just like Renault, we have our own unique way of saying it

I rang dolphin rifles today enquiring about their cz 457 action lilja barrel rifles.
£1800 for the rifle in one of their chassis or £1150 for the barreled action only if I want to get my own chassis.
I don't want to spend that much on a 22 so it will be a tikka t1x or a cz 457 in a bravo chassis for me.

I'm waiting for my RFD to ring me with a timeline for my T1x, hopefully hear tomorrow. I've decided to go for an MDT Oryx chassis. I love the LSS style chassis but the oryx is such a good price, and for me mostly doing 50m that's probably overkill anyway :D

    The oryx is great value.
My mate bought one for his cz 457 recently.
I never got a chance to see it yet with this covid but he loves it and the rifle is shooting great.

    Excellent choice and combination.

That’s what I’d go for if upgrading.

My RFD will have Serial Number by the end of the week, so I should have the fca1 from him to bring up to the station by early next week :D

I do have a buffer tube, butt stock and grip that will fit an LSS Chassis to get me started, but would need the MDT ones put on sooner rather than later. So I'll price that vs an Oryx (which I would need the spacer kit without a doubt).

I'll definately get the vertical grip whichever way I go, looks badass imo :D

I just went and ordered a Tikka t1x as well, I also ordered a krg bravo stock in stealth grey and a egw 20moa rail.

Excellent! It's the waiting part now that kills me!

I do like the KRG, but the MDT stuff just pips it in the looks for me personally. What sort of money is the KRG?

I've priced the Oryx with spacer kit, front swivel stud and adjuster knobs for the cheek riser. Works out at €510 including postage and VAT at customs direct from Oryx in Canada.

Anywhere in the UK (for Oryx) is €480-€510 direct conversion plus VAT, postage not factored in.

I'm getting it through a dealer in the north but didn't get a final price yet.
They are 483 sterling with march scopes so I'd imagine it will be much the same.

Guys check out price and postage from above I think these guys might be the cheapest, but don't know what their postage would be.
Getting it sent North might be the way to go if you live not too far from there.

They are one of the reference prices I have above. Direct from Oryx still the cheapest...

On the barrel length thing I was reading that the .22LR benchrest guys recommend slugging the barrel and cutting/crowning it at the tightest and roundest place. Actual length is secondary.

I may be handy with tools and mild fabrication, but I certainly won't be doing that myself :D
