We are going in the right direction but I doubt many are asking or expecting easing of restrictions in the next few weeks. What we're hearing is no easing until end of May possibly, that's about 15 weeks away. There's not being overly positive and then there's just depressing and hopeless.

15 weeks is madness. MM should never have said that.

What happens when we get a few cases near the border? Lockdown the country again for a few weeks? We're too small a country for regional lockdowns, loads of people travel county to county everyday to work.

That's where we need real, aggressive contact tracing. Any outbreak needs to be hunted down in the community, like it's done in East Asia. Ultimately, vaccines will help reduce the danger of a community outbreak over time and the main cases we will need to be concerned with are those from the South African or another vaccine evading strain.

They use mobile and credit card data, GDPR and all that.

South African or another vaccine evading strain.

So it's been proven that SA strain avoids the vaccine, when was this evidence presented?

So it's proven that the Aztra Zenica vaccine (which forms a significant part of Ireland's roll out plan) works on the SA strain? When was this evidence presented?

You made the claim about the SA variant avoiding the vaccine so either back it up or stop spoofing.

People who are enjoying the lockdown are absolutely desperate to find a vaccine-beating variant.

The nation of South Africa seem to think, it's not working. Maybe they're just spoofers as well who love lockdown so much they are abandoning a vaccine. Now show me your proof it works baby!!

You've a lot more faith in our test and trace than I do then. I think zero covid here would be a disaster and I hope its never discussed again. Most people calling for it don't even understand what they're calling for. All they hear is we can go back to living normally which won't happen. It's particularly ridiculous when we have vaccines being rolled out at the same time which is the end game to restrictions anyway.

People who continue to bang on about zero covid don't understand how trade works into this country, especially compared to the zero covid poster boy of New Zealand. Zero covid requires that you 100% close your border and mandatory quarantine every arrival without exception.

Freight arrives in Ireland for the most part along with drivers. We don't have the infrastructure to deal with driverless freight in Ireland. So if you like nice things like food etc (and yes to grow food and raise cattle we import argi products to enable that, along with importing seasonal products we don't have at certain times of the year) zero covid won't work as we cannot quarantined every driver that enters the country whilst keeping the flow of goods alive.

Add the above to the fact that we have a border with another jurisdiction that would be impossible to control, due to it's size and the fact that so many people cross both ways for essential work, it's anion runner.

People so weak minded, that they'd rather stick on a blindfold, say their prayers and hope for the best, rather than have plan for the possibility that something could go wrong.

Vietnam is a "zero covid" country with 4 land borders and goods being transported over their borders via lorry. If they can do it, we can do it. Enough of this loser mentality.

What a price FF is going to pay at the ballot box if the people of Ireland are looking after Easter and seeing every other country in Europe socialising safely with people back to work and play, while we're still under house arrest, while we're vaccinating about three old people a week and Micheál Martin is demanding we just have a fourth extension to house arrest and we'll review it after that, and we've all to #holdfirm and #flattenthecurve.

That photo on the sideboard with President Biden is going to get very old, very quickly.

Varadkar is many things, but stupid is not one of them. An autumn General Election could wipe FF out, given the extent of the public anger towards the Taoiseach's continuous reneging on lifting restrictions while himself clambering over the old and sick in the vaccination queue so he can go gallivanting abroad. I wonder will Varadkar go for it.

    Was always the correct approach

China showed the world how to do it a year ago, only a few have followed

NZ, Aus etc with great success

You notice China are very relaxed about vaccines, it's like they think its not the only approach.

Israel is a basket case, war torn, extremists, a mess of a place and who are we following

    Bloody Israel

Luke O'Neill and wanna be virologists here linking daily studies of how great they are doing

Israels problem is that the two large groups with the highest infection rates are the two groups most resistant to both taking the vaccine and adhering to any restrictions. Orthodox Jews and Israeli Arabs

Anyone who suggests Vietnam is giving us a true picture of what’s actually happening on the ground, sums up the extremist views I associate with those advocating for zero Covid.

Do you have any evidence that Vietnam is lying? People actually in Vietnam don't seem to think so.

Ignore, ah come on, harden up will ya. I know the possibility that anything may go wrong can be difficult for some people, but just shutting out the world won't get you very far.

Sure. When we discover how to make pigs fly, I’m sure we’ll manage to unearth evidence of the Vietnamese miracle approach.

That's as valid as saying people who want to ease restrictions are hoping it will lead to more cases and deaths.
