Are you not suggesting that they're extending this one to prevent having to another one down the line?

If not, what point are YOU trying to make?

Of course we will go back into lockdown.

Even if we stay at level 5 till April how many will be vaccinated? It will just take 6-8 weeks for cases to be back up to 1000 a day.
Not if the government actually had a strategy. Plenty of countries have shown that it is possible.

I have to say the thoughts of Level 5 lockdown until March 5 is soul destroying.

Even if said till end Feb would give people some hope but Jaysus another 5 weeks of this!

I know no other choice but I feel it gives people no hope. I'd worry for people's mental health. January not a great month anyway in normal year, this news is not going to help.

I fully support new lockdown measures for airports/ border etc but should gave happened a lot soon before UK strain took hold.

It just feels like its never ending.

Sorry to burst your bubble but it won't finish on March 5th,it will go on until at least Easter

I don't know, I think most people know the score at this stage about how we have to take a cautious approach - I think December was a wake up call to many.

There's far less noise from industry and other businesss talking heads compared to the last lockdown.

And re keeping people on side. If businesses are instructed to stay closed they'll stay closed.

Noise will start when cases keep dropping

Yeah business will stay closed alright

My fear would be its a huge ask for people to keep up the current level of effort, keeping contacts low , not seeing people for month after month after month

Also add in no social outlets

    Big big ask

Sorry but March 5th is being optimistic.

There is every reason to think that cases will be low by then

But with the slow vaccine rollout there is no reason to think it wont be short lived.

Why can't we reopen once everyone is vaccinated?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,000 ✭✭✭Hubertj

I think people will be surprised how many essential workers travel in and out of this country every day. There are so many people that can’t be quarantined that I think mandatory will have little effect. I also don’t agree with locking people up for 2 weeks.
Do we also lock up COVID positive people in Ireland to ensure they don’t infect others? Better controls in airports and flights are a definite requirement to stop non essential travel.

Well we can, but everyone won't be vaccinated for a long long time the rate we're going.

It's a big ask of course, but I don't see what else there is for doing. If cases are high you can't open up really. We've been here before. Keeping people on side is important, but equally there's nothing to be done, in my view, until cases are low enough.

I think most people accept that not much, if anything, will change for February. Beyond that is anyone's guess at this stage.

That's not strictly true, that's not how vaccines work.

    Receiving a vaccine doesn't work 100%.

Receiving a vaccine doesn't 100% stop you transmitting the virus.

Large groups of people can not ever be vaccinated.

    Etc.

Why can't we reopen once everyone is vaccinated?

The UK have vaccinated 78% of over 80s, with the average age of death being 82. I would imagine the average age is similar here.

I'm starting to think that politicians don't have too much faith in the vaccines.

We can but that won't be till September at the earliest. The question is what will happen in between.

That's true but Leo is talking about a slow slow reopening even when cases are low similar to last year so that's prob restrictions being eased in three week chunks

So the ask of people is three months of level 5 then a painfully slow reopening

    Deja vu

If the alternative to what Leo is saying is rolling lockdowns for the next year then I for one am ok with all the negatives surrounding quarantining.

My Dad is 80, he reckons he won't take a vaccine because, in his words-'give it to a young person who can live their life, I've had mine'.

Also when you think of all those UK 80+ vaccine recipients who may just have received a vaccine that is only 8% effective for their age category it makes you wonder who we should be prioritising. Surly teachers should be high on the list to get kids back to education.

We also don't know whether new variants may arise where the vaccines are less effective, or indeed how long current vaccines offer immunity. It's possible we won't get through everyone before those already vaccinated need a new jab (or two)

I don't know how restrictions are going to be eased to be honest, but it'll be slow.

The government tried to give people a bit of hope in December - and it backfired spectacularly.

There's no point in the government coming out and saying this will be eased in 6 weeks or two months if it's not something that they can promise. I don't see the point in false promises.

No point in extending to end of Feb, you'd be doing the review after 3 weeks instead of 4 probably. This way the review is a week before and they get a full 4 weeks before it.

First week of March was always most likely

Matches the NI restrictions date i see.

The target needs to be X number of cases, everyone knew the restrictions were up in 6 weeks in December and started behaving accordingly in the weeks running up to it.

Yep I've written off 2021. Was speaking to herself last night about perhaps getting away out foreign (ie canaries) maybe in November. Looks like that's off the cards now. Going to be another miserable year that's going to take immense toll on peoples mental health and well being. At least the evenings are getting longer so I'll keep up my daily walks. My daffodils and tulips are coming out. And I'm going to replant my little patch in the garden and enjoy some nice veg over the summer. It's the small things that keep you going.

If taking the vaccine doesn’t get us back to normal then what’s the point in taking it,if we’re going to be locked down for an indefinite time.
