Tony using the 14 day ago here to scare people. I'd be nice just for a change to say how well its going. Numbers dropping really fast yet he searches for a stat to scare people. RTE will use it to spread more misery later no doubt instead of using 5 or 7 day.
What would you have used? 7 day is still more than 50% higher than its peak in October. 3-day average is also higher. The numbers are falling, yes, but they're still pretty sh*t. I presume Tony is trying to discourage people from letting their guard down just because we're now only at "bad" instead of "very bad".

Israel seems to be consistently vaccinating about 2% of its population every day now, so hopefully in about 6-8 weeks we'll see them with feck all cases.. As opposed to ~7k a day now.. Dunno how non-vaccination of infected people will affect things; presumably they'll have a similar level of immunity.

So 1 in 10 arrivals from Brazil test positive, and that’s just out of the numbers who came forward for testing after a call was put out for all recent arrivals to get tested. Out of 1,900 passengers, only 604 came forward for testing, with 52 testing positive. You would imagine those who heeded the advice and got tested would be more compliant with restrictions than those who did not come forward, so I would imagine the percentage of positives in that cohort would be more than 1 in 10. How many of those then that went back to shared accommodation, or went straight into their job without quarantining...? And they’re not just positive cases, they could be carrying the Brazilian variant...

The regulations around travel have been an utter shambles. No wonder we’re in the mess we’re in.

Maybe people who came forward for testing were more likely to have symptoms

How many more were asymptomatic then if those had symptoms? Having 1 in 10 passengers coming from a high risk area with a dangerous variant and just letting them go about their business before putting a call out for testing, which the vast majority ignored, is reckless.

Agreed. Seems to me the Gov were terrified of upsetting the Free Movement thing or upsetting anyone wishing to come here in the first place as a visitor/worker etc. Everyone knew travel was a big vector, heck how did the virus travel all over the world in such a short space of time anyhow?

There is a thread in the Coronavirus section here labelled

"Can we have some fcuking control on the airports from high risk countries please?" (too lazy to figure out how to link it sorry) that was started in June last year

I'm observing the rules best I can but this travel issue is and was the elephant in the room.

    It's worse than that.

Brazilians in Ireland are all over social media openly having parties with very large groups of people.

It's enough to make you sick.

They have effectively become a fifth column of COVID-19 in Ireland.

He's clearly exagerrating for effect when posing the question - is the Russian vaccine being considered?

Which in itself isn't a bad question. Also probably looking for attention, the clickbait version political behaviour

Why cant it be stated when they apply for a visa to come here that its mandatory to have a test after arrival and if they dont, they are deported.

Any good reason why even one Brazilian should arrive in the country at this time?

    Not one should be arriving.

The borders should be completely closed to both Brazil and Portugal - and any Brazilian that attempts to enter Ireland through any other route whose source was Brazil.

And don’t forget, they were all required to produce a negative PCR test upon arrival anyway, but just didn’t bother. Even after that, they were just let off on their way.

A lot of them probably don’t need a visa. Many of them have a Portuguese passport, so have visa-free entry into the EU.

Dont upset me by telling me some didnt have a pcr test results on arrival but were allowed enter anyway? Hmmm joke of a government

Lots of talk about variant's and new strains being used to stoke fear. It may be true but there has been little info published on it- everything seems very anecdotal.

Matt Handcock in the UK said they had a higher mortality rate but it seems we'll just have to take his word for it. It's strange and worrying that here we are 12 months in and things are getting worse instead of better in relation to lockdowns and restrictions even with vaccine rollout. I hate the term 'New Normal' as nothing about the way we live today is normal, if it continues like this into next year we may have to accept it as normal.

That actually can’t happen with RORO freight. We don’t have enough trucks or drivers this side of the Irish Sea, we don’t have the space, and it would slow things down so much that freight forwarders would not be bothered with the hassle of organising Ireland deliveries. Our shelves would be bare in no time.

The best we can do for freight is testing (rapid testing at that) which would mean that cases leak through, and even if we as a nation had hit zero Covid after months of lockdown and border quarantine we would have to keep locking down as the authorities trace infections that have leaked through the border. Australia still experiences imports of virus even though theoretically every possible source of virus is quarantined for 14 days. We would have nowhere near that level of control, and so our lockdowns would be many times what they have to do

(And the UK have announced their plans and it is only mandatory quarantine for those from high risk countries. Everyone else heads home)

Yeah I agree with you that rapid testing of drivers will have to be done.
However capacity needs to be built up at our ports to accommodate roro trailers being brought in to ports, more drivers for within Ireland can always be got, this gives us a parallel way of moving freight along with drivers having to leave Irish shores to collect freight.

Why is that anything to do with Coronavirus?
