Can someone explain the help to buy scheme please?

Hi All, So im pretty confused about the help to buy scheme, what does it do exactly is it to help get a deposit for a house or help get a mortgage? i am a single male trying to save a deposit to apply for a mortgage with 12000 saved so far but i think ill only be able to get a 170k mortgage on my own, how can the htb help…
