Had a crack at this challenge this morning. My intention this morning was to do a recce run to see how the local woods would be for it, rather than having to head out to my original intended hill in Killenard. Decided to give it a proper bash, particularly if the weather is supposed to turn next week.

A quick re-cap (since I started a blog here, I might as well keep the detailled stuff as an excuse to use that!) It was tough going! Ran from the house to the start which was about 3k. I started near the local railway station and up towards the woods. The first kilometre nearly killed me! I got four complete laps of the woods in and made a mad dash back towards the start. I couldn't remember if we settled on having to return to the start! I came up about 150metres-ish shy of that! Ran home and now chilling!

Slight discrepency between the Strava and the Garmin elevation listed. Strava had me 190m, while Garmin had me 230m. Definitely felt more like 230 if you were to ask for my unbias opinion!

I wanted to walk soooo bad..

I'll post details on my log but this was tough, really tough. Found a hill just within my 5k which was a 27m over 400m. It averaged 7+% gradient but had 11-12% ramps. I was wobbly for a finish and pressed stop at 39:50 only to realise I hadn't actually pressed it .. Panicky stop at 39:59 just in time :cool:

303m elevation and I doubt I could squeeze any more out of it. Reps are bloody hard. Strava gave me 255m. I covered 11x 2 min reps and a few ramps at the top.

Tried first attempt on Saturday. Ran up to Loch Lumman - great to have such a beautiful spot within 5K.
    https://www.strava.com/activities/4743799992
First 1.5K was rolling hills but not much elevation recorded, same for last 2K - don’t really believe that but Strava is the "system of record". Ended up with 218m. Tried out a few other routes later but none has 35 mins of uphill. To get higher I will have to mix in some reps. Thought I might try somewhere else this morning but calves said 'no'. #recovery

Did a recce today on the only hill/mountain in my 5k radius. I'd have gotten more had I run too the hill but opted to just run up and around it. Hilariously garmin gives me exactly the same 150m elevation I got from my run around town but this was much slower (very difficult terrain for a lot of it).

I'm in the middle of flat North Dublin city but I've found an interesting site that shows the heights of every part of Dublin within a couple of metres - it might be useful to anyone searching for a route ... you can zoom in to street level.

    Oh good god!

I ran up and down our driveway, which is a fairly steep hill. While this was more a test to see if my Achilles would be able to cope with hills rather than a real workout I still expected more.

    Garmin says 153 meters https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/6238693383

Strava says 100 meters https://www.strava.com/activities/4753918781 (bastards!)

I see we both have the head and carrick gollan to take advantage of for this challenge :D

Can we split the table into Garmin & Strava categories also, seeing as Garmin has a higher random number generator :)

    No!

Some are getting same Strava/Garmin -
Some are getting higher Strava
Some are getting higher Garmin
Some are using elevation correction on Strava which sometime gives you more
Some are enabling elevation correction on GC which invariably gives you less

Link whichever you like ... rules#1-6 stand :p

The likely split will be climbs vs Reps. With each getting the same points system

Another recce. Tried a hill in Catherine's Pk. It's short but steep. Returns were very disappointing, lap data very erratic. Strava showed a variation from 1m to 11m! Garmin lap data was worthless, but the elevation trace seemed to show a consistent 8m.

    Garmin 106m

    Strava 93m

I did 2 x 6 x hill. Each ascent took about 60sec; each descent a little more. 5 mins between sets.

Overall gain includes cool down return to car.

    Legs are feeling it. :o

Did you try the one at the end of the river walk? That's surely worth more. That's assuming the one you did was the short sharp one at the small ruin?

The one at the end of the river walk is the one I did, Annie. Honestly, I was expecting more from it.

I did think about the other one you mentioned, but didn't fancy it. It might get a go yet. :pac:

Thats mad, I'd have thought it was hillier than that!! Ah you have to try the other one now:D

Fair play Pherekydes! Many had a few goes at the January Challenge but pretty brave to have multiple goes at this one :)

Also, I am constantly typing your username wrong and the gent you are, never to correct me :o

    Hangover didnt help!

Pretty much accepted I'm on a hiding to nothing this month so I'll take my hiding and move on to March! Was happy to see hill intervals in the plan for the week so decided I'd use those as my effort. Finished the session in 30mins. Thought about spending the remaining 7min allocation going up and down the hill but figured it was probably pointless as gaining a few meters here or there wasnt gonna turn this into a table topping effort!

    Garmin Elevation Gain = 105m
    Strava Elevation Gain = 87m

    354m climb reps challenge

I had rest day yesterday, so decided to give this a shot today with reps up and down a 90m hill.(with a mini rep towards end to use up couple minutes). I think I need more than a rest day tomorrow. Ignore heart data, it's a wrist monitor.
The last climb was difficult and made me wish my 10k time was only 30 mins! 354m climb, delighted the with effort and the lungs really felt they got good clear out! It was a very slow cool down to get home.

    323m in 44mins

Ran up my local Annagh hill, which was frozen and snow dusted as you went higher. I opted to take a direct steep route (over 40% gradient in places!) which meant a climb with stick in hand, and lots of slipping back down. All my running is easy pace for the moment so no records were broken. I reached the highest point sooner than anticipated so had to run back down and up again to try and grab extra elevation. Next time I think a longer route up might be more runnable, and may lead to greater cumulative height. I'd also bring a camera for the views which for now remain in memory... a distant snow-covered Lug, the sun setting over frozen Mt Leinster, snow squalls coming over the Irish Sea from Wales...

But the overall "score" is not really important... it'd be different in other weather, ground conditions, route choice, time of year. And that's the real beauty of running up a hill (and I reckon a large part of the reason MCOS chose this particular challenge!)

Kudos Mike, good fun was had :D

Thanks Paul! Knew you love the hills and knew you'd enjoy this one. Thanks for taking part. Not quite the mad TDA challenges we used to do on the dark side forum way back. But many months still to go...

I have a couple more locations to try, will do one at the weekend and maybe another the next weekend. I won't win any trophies but can hopefully improve on my table position:).

Still trying to psych myself up to tackle Howth. I'm thinking straight up from the village and then repeats at the top.

It seems like a lot of effort at the moment though :D

Had a go at this challenge today. Had planned to do the longer hill a few times rather than the short one I ended up doing but there was an eejit flying up & down it so I decide it was too dangerous! I do like doing hills as I feel they strengthen my legs so I did kinda enjoy this. It was a lot steeper than i'd ever usually do but sure what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!!

I think this will probably be my only "attempt" at this challenge. Had selected a decent hill for a proper effort tomorrow, but based on how my calves reacted, I think I might bow out.

In our trail running group we've set an ascent challenge being your 10km time plus 2 minutes if you're in your 20s, 3 for those in their 30s etc. We ask people to give a brief route description because obviously, as was well debated here, a long climb is very different to hill reps. To start it off I did 306m in 42 minutes in 9.5 reps over 8.67km of road, just to put a figure up....
    ...
    ...
    ...
...Ian Bay Bailey, one of the best mountain runners on the island, responded to say he does an 850m climb in 36.5 minutes...
