Light rain just starting to turn to sleet and bits of snow here above Aughrim, South Wicklow. 100 asl

Well, looking at the temp forecast profile for here locally, and a big improvement on offer from previous runs. What was forecast to be a minimum -2.0c, has now plummeted down to -3.0c, and this under a 'cold' easterly. I've seen better temps under a bog standard cool westerly. What a joke of a winter this has been.

The poor minima is probably due to the constant wind and cloud flowing in from Great Britain.

Not as cold at night as you would expect from an easterly but this might mean we have more chance of some snow this time...when its extremely cold at night then its usually to clear

The ground is saturated here, will that have much of an effect on snow sticking?

They nearly always overdo them. And the ECM is no better than any other model in this regard.

Cheers. Was working up on a roof earlier just outside Dublin and was lovely and refreshing with little bite to the wind. Am heading back shortly so expecting some bite this time :)

Just in from the shops, it's very raw out, much moreso than I've felt yet this winter. Still wearing shorts since march, even in the snow and frosts after Xmas but really feeling it today

WBT coming down across a lot of England now. Cloud tops here are very low (~850 hPa, reddish orange colour, ~1300 m) but over England they're extending higher, up to around 700 hPa (yellow, ~2800 m). On the animation the higher tops are starting to enter the Irish Sea now, marking the colder upper air.

Yes, initially, but if snowfall intensity is high enough it can quickly overcome that warmth and moisture and insulate any further snowfall from it.

Really can feel the temperature dropping now in the east. Met Éireann temps showing lowest temps currently in Dublin, Meath, Cavan and Donegal. Ground drying out here in D5, haven’t had precipitation since yesterday evening but overcast

  • Registered Users Posts: 513 ✭✭✭noplacehere

I expect the thread to work a little like this.

    1. Today/Monday: ' A few flurries of snizzle is this it!?' 'The beast! more a fart of mild air' 'Met Eireann get it so badly wrong again'

    2. Tuesday: 'Some decent snow showers now' 'Beginning to accumulate, do Met Eireann have a warning out?' 'Met Eireann caught asleep at the wheel again beginning to bucket down here in Ashbourne'

    3. Wednesday' 6 inches of snow here, what the feck are Met Eireann up to, this should be a red warning!!'

I feel if you are to post a criticism of a weather forecast in this forum you should also have to post the definition of the word forecast as well as the word estimate and prediction..... maybe if posters had to write it out often enough

It’s 0c at 300 metres. I would’ve thought that it would’ve been colder than that given the continental airmass. But I suppose the coldest air isn’t here yet. Still tiny patches of snow too.

And plenty of people that don’t live in this area out walking who probably wouldn’t have darkened the door of the area prior to lockdown. (And pretty sure some of them have driven more than 5 miles considering the Derry registrations I am seeing) All that peace and quiet gone.

I thought UK was to get a good bit of snow today. It seems only Leeds Bradford (which is at a High elevation) is the only place recoding more than a couple of cm
