Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Small streamer effect setting itself up for Dublin (most likely south Dublin) on latest radar just off Angelsey?

Had a decent snow grain shower about 1hr ago.
Temp dropped to 1.6C Dp -3.8C

Snow is falling from stratiform clouds and is mostly pellets or grains with the odd flake. There is no deep convection over the Irish sea at the moment, but instability will gather later this evening. The cloud level is below freezing point water droplets are super cooled fall from cloud melt refreeze and bounce off the ground. Grains are like soft hail that notoriously fall from stratifom clouds

Looking out over the Irish sea, there are a few cumulus but mostly stratus.

There is no melt layer today. The Graupel has formed due to supercooled water droplets at around 800mb (saturated level) colliding with the snowflakes.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

800mb layer is at 2000m, our stratiform layer is below 925mb or at it.
If your air temps are above freezing, then you have a melt layer which currently rises to 350m right now

Very light snow shower in letterkenny. Was not expecting anything here. Temp steady at 2c. Some nice sunshine too. Nice to see after a full week of cloudy skies.

Meant to ask, if these streamers are building let's say just off shore of Liverpool but skirts the Anglesey Pen, does this effect those trains or are those heading for South Dublin atm build just off shore Anglesey?? Does that make any sense :-)

More activity now in the Irish sea just east of Dublin and has actually been building back beyond Angelsey which is good to see. Nothing particularly heavy developed as of yet but heading for the Dublin area none the less.

There could be light showers almost anywhere in the next couple of days but the lying snow will be in the East and Northeast

No effect, unless there is development just north of it which there seems to be atm. South Dublin looks better placed.

Lovely snowflakes here atm, no graupel which is nice to see.

Thursday snow event looking precarious now according to the Tech thread. (don't shoot the messenger.)

These are the clouds over the east atm hence the restrictive nature of the showers. Very little instability

Have noticed the little birds are flat out at the bird feeder in the garden all morning. The shrub and the wall between ourselves and our neighbours garden is busy with our feathered friends. All stocking up in advance....

Same here. A few days of snow might be fun for us but it's life and death for a lot of these wild creatures. Bring on the Spring.

My cats who are in and out all the time are eating and eating and eating. I suppose we are the same though.

From what I'm seeing on the animated radar the Isle of Man is actually causing the formation of showers between the island and Louth rather than preventing them?
I'm thinking that there may not be much truth in the 'Isle of Man shadow' theory.
Apparently there was evidence of it in 2010 but certainly not today.

The dreaded "Green" rain showing up on the radar & heading for Drogheda. Well, it was nice while it lasted.

Jokes aside, charts for Thursday into Friday are still looking good for the participation band to stall over the midlands/east coast, lets all just hope that the ground&middle air temps are conducive to a good long snow event!

I got called a troll for saying it would be mainly rain and sleet.

Some of these showers are starting to build from much further back now from just west of Liverpool/Blackpool. Decent sea track from there.

Met Éireann just updated their website in last half hour. Looking like heavy snow in midlands, east and north on Thursday until Friday.

Rain applies to areas further south

Its a rollercoaster for snow all the time in Ireland. I enjoy both the ups and downs and take nothing seriously thats still over 24hrs away! If it comes it comes, and I'm enjoying today for what it is

Its called divergence and its a theory which can prevent the formation of showers to the lee of higher ground in this case the IOM. Winds forced to ascend over the higher ground of IOM and also forced around the island (diverging) if you get more of a wind. Can create a layer of cloud at height to the lee of IOM and kills convection but its a slight possibility and occurs less often. Proper atmospheric conditions between IOM and the east coast will develop showers which is more in reality.

Another shower here and more flakes this time which is nice to see.
    Temp hovering around 2C
    Dp is just great

Looks like leftover moisture from eastern England reaching out into the Irish sea now. :)

Slightly heavier graupel now in Shankill D18. Still fairly light tbh.

Hence why it`s particularly important that they be kept fed in these cold wintry conditions.
