Agreed! Anything that gives our gardai any kind of a boost doing the difficult jobs they have to do, reminding us all that there are beauty spots out there we just can’t get to them now, and helps forge relationships with other police forces around Europe is a good thing. I loved the video and am proud of it.

And those whinging about tax payers money are probably those who don’t pay any taxes and are welfare lifers by choice....

I wonder if the sad cases giving out here are the same spas that the gardai have to deal with whist doing 12 or 14 hour tours of duty since march last year or do they only sprout petty inane sneery little comments on line ?

    You can bank on it.

We've had multiple stabbings in recent weeks. They should have held off for a bit to release the video.

If the police forces around the world had to wait for a period where they didn’t have stabbings, serious crime, etc.
None of them would never get to release the video.

It's simple they do this to take the piss out of the brainless masses. Trickles down from the top like people eating gelato in front of starving children. Now before any start moaning I know of 3 well educated people (one a teacher) to commit suicide during lockdown. This is no joke. People are losing their jobs/careers/leisure/minds amongst other things so this nonsense should not be encouraged.

Also a man died in Garda custody the other day so it's an organisation in disrepute.

It will never cease to amaze me how people cheer on tyranny. In fact want it.Want to be under house arrest ad finitum People cheer and woop on people like Michael Martin as he laughs at you swanning off to Washington on another tax payers junket. (He will go anyone saying he won't is naive)

As Bill Cooper once said 'The saddest thing I ever learned in life is humanity is the dumb ignorant animals the elites see them as'

Do you know the details of this, in order to link it to the organisation being in disrepute?

If not, the claim should be withdrawn.

its an infantilization of an institution one is supposed to respect

Fair play to the Guards, great video.

Bit of craic to raise morale and money for charity.

Happens in most organisations so why should the Guards be any different.

There is an intangible benefit to this.

Definite intangible benefit. I'm sure the BLM and the anti-maskers can't see the Guards in the round but any normal law-abiding person (and no, the BLM marchers were not, by virtue of marching during lockdown), comparing our lads and lassies to Russia's HOMO (ironic? Yep) cops would see that as an unarmed police force they, in the main, police by consent.
Would all the whingeboxes on here pick a busy national route and not apply the safe cross code please. Thanks in advance.

It is at first cringy when you (I) see it. But that's being insecure, post-colonial mindset. After watching it, the landscape, the horses, it is the heart of what being Irish means to the rest of the world. Professional but always going to have the craic. Would all of the Germanic US styled self-loathers please get a nap.

So, apart from being a waste of time, what is the purpose of the video?

How would I know? I did not make it. However if you read my post I already listed a few possibilities. If you want to know the _actual_ purpose of it you would do better to ask the people who's purpose it was.

That said however - the point I was making to LilacNails is that the narrative that it had a purpose or it was a "must" or a "need" is perhaps not valid in the first place. Does it need a purpose? Does everything need a purpose? Does Art need a purpose? Or can it just _be_?

The police are supposed to intimidate criminals. Do you think this helps?

There is quite a few issues with your question here I think.

First I think the claim that their role is to "intimidate criminals" could spark an entire separate rabbit hole. I am not sure that is their role in relation to criminals - but even if it is then I certainly do not think it is their role in relation to _all_ criminals.

Further as another user pointed out before me - even if it is one of their goals it is not their _sole_ goal. If they have 10 goals then picking the single goal that the video is least beneficial to is rather selective. There are other goals they also have to which the video could be beneficial. Such as portraying them as approachable human beings to the non-criminal public who are - let's face it - the majority of us.

But to focus on your point directly instead - who said it needs to help? The question is does it actively do the opposite? If it could be shown that it was actively harming the goals of the force then that is of course an issue. But there is no requirement that it should "help".

To put it another way - if a group has objectives X Y and Z then we should not assume that everything that group does has to explicitly be in the service of X Y and Z. They can of course also do things entirely neutral to their central goals.

Finally being silly and having fun does not negatively impact being intimidating either. Two examples jump to mind. The first is parenthood. I can be insanely silly and profoundly childish with my kids. When I am being authoritative however - they know it and respond accordingly. No amount of silliness prior takes from that. The second example is that of elite fighting forces. They are damn intimidating. If you listen to podcasts like that of Jokko Willik however you find out just how childish and immature and silly those guys and gals are in their down time. It does not for one second take away from their intimidating abilities on the battlefield and I would be no less terrified to be on the opposite lines if I had seen them doing an Irish Jig the night before :)

I honestly wouldn't have wasted the time and energy to compose a reply like this - but fair play, well said.

You'd be surprised how little time it took. I've been using computers privately in education and in work all my life. I type at a speed you would find insane :)

I see no such thing in the video? Perhaps what I think infantilization means differs from what you think infantilization means?

Yes, I loved the horses side stepping.
A bit of fun, overall, it brought a smile to my face.

Is it for charity or something?? What's the purpose of it? My initial reaction was "what a waste of time and tax payers money"...

I thought I'd seen it all with opinionated1 and then opinionated2 but then this guy! :)

What this video mostly does for me is remind me of the stunning natural beauty that we are blessed with here!

    Dancing is infantile ?

Or is it just any form of dancing that they didn't do 'back in my day"

If my job entailed being the first responder to stabbings, shootings, suicides, traffic accidents and not only having to see the horrific injuries and dead people but to then have to pass on that devastating news to the families then I’d also need a release like this dance video where I could forget for 15 minutes all the **** I had to listen to and all the gorey images I could never unsee.

Cheap shots like you just did to me there. Pot/kettle/black eh!

You think that time could not be invested more wisely??

6 stabbings in one day in Dublin/ several deaths maybe a anti knife taskforce?

Nah let's make stupid tik tok videos dancing like trained monkeys.

No I'm not a misery junkie whatever that is I'm tired and perhaps contrary as I'm tired but my point is valid.

These garda's time should be better used, anyone with more than one braincell knows this.

I'm saying dancing around like eejits is not appropriate during lockdown. Especially with people killing themselves.

What if this was videoed on the tea or lunch break? Are they allowed those?

Edit: and people have been killing them selves long before covid happened. I need both hands to count those that I know that took their own lives prior to 2020.

you phrased it in a way that is trying to separate it from the context. I can strawman your strawman by suggesting you clearly think its ok to behave in the workplace exactly how you behave at home or socialising. You would be happy with the Gardai having causal Friday? pajama Saturday? fancy dress Sunday?

A lot better than the videos of all the dickheads thinking they're funny when stopped at checkpoints and taking footage of their "witty" replies and quotes about their rights

We need more of this, not less. Feck off You who are permanently offended.

The nuns and monks dancing were brilliant..

It’s uolifting, and I enjoyed it. Great beat to the music too.

These videos seem to produce the direct opposite effect of 'bringing a bit of enjoyment' to peoples lives.

These videos seem to generate rows, arguments and more division that we don't really need.

    That's whats happening in here.

Always love the 'waste of taxpayers money' bit.

Half the people on boards are here on their employers time, but they still find room to get high and mighty about the waste of tax payers money.

That's just a tiny minority of people, though.

Vast majority see it for what is is. A bit of light relief during incredibly difficult times for all, including gárdai.

Why was it infantile? Do you understand that that means being like an infant which dancing is not.

I think its silly but I really dont get the extreme reactions to it.
Its not brilliant but some people are losing their minds saying how great it is.
Its not horrible but some people are treating it like an egregiously tasteless insult.

I'd worry about the people behind the usernames sometimes.

You do realise we have Gardai all over the country ya. They are not all investigating the stabbings in Dublin right now

Gardai are a public body charged with law and order. They've a regulatory and public service function. I'd file this under the latter, and not to the detriment of the former.

Yea, there's people dying, and other terrible stuff. It'll happen whether or not a few cops and their media handlers produce a tiktok that might lift public spirits, their own morale and show Ireland is still there for when the Covid sh1tfest is over

    Stupid point.

All over the country? That why they are on top of one another for their tik tok videos?

Cheer them on while they laugh at ya what do I care.
