BT mention that if attempts to play the ball it's a yellow, but he made no attempt to play the ball hence it's a red - whether accidental or not - at least this way it's not subjective.

Also it's the 3rd time this season that he's made a challenge making no attempt for the ball.

If he attempted to make a tackle, it would have been yellow but because he didn't make a challenge it's red. Some of these rules are ridiculous.
