Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I saw the video this morning on Twitter. If this is the type of thing that annoys people then they must be in a permanent state of low-level irritability at best, and a fully-blown crank at worst.

It was a good news story in a time where good news is very welcome. I said it on the thread last week about the Garda video, but this site is fast becoming the premier online hangout of a sort of extremely contrary and frustrated man in his 30's/40's. It's always so bleak, pessimistic, and mean-spirited. Bizarre.

    good news lol

    its not news.

They post this crap because they like attention and there should be an invisible banner spread across everything they share "Like me, I hope you think I'm good"

They won't post about their piles or the argument they had with their other half. Just the stuff that makes them look good (in their view)

Some people just need the validation, a large proportion of the population actually.

    SAD

Not everyone goes around like a big black pool of negativity, thankfully.

Have not seen dog video. Will probably see it later and think awwwww..
Seems it would be harmless compared to others.
Recently I saw a video compilation of a guy donating to a homeless woman from his car in LA. Repeated incidents. Food. Jeans. Money. Whatever. All filmed and put together as a little record. I thought it was horribly invasive of the privacy of the lady, who was always glancing suspiciously at the camera. I mean who the feck wants to be recorded looking snaggled toothed and down on their luck for all the world to see?

But the worst is babies being constantly hounded by the camera phone. They are learning to place their centre of awareness outside of themselves into the ever watchful all - seeing eye. Not good. Derealisation and depersonalisation in the long run.

At a time of unrelenting, round-the-clock covering of Covid misery - I, for one, welcome any form of light-news relief however contrived it may be.

Dog was lucky he didn't get taken out by a farmer, and not for a nice meal.

I liked the dog rescue story but:

Just wait for the barrage of "I got jabbed", "My first pint since March 20", "Look at me at this match, mad", "Here's me putting my camera phone in the way of someone else at this gig" etc etc.

People want to feel like their lives matter would be my guess.

People share this stuff with their friends. Then it gets shared more and more and grows legs.
But that's social media, you don't have to partake if you don't want to.

There's a load of people getting pissy their friends and acquaintances are sharing content. If you don't like it, don't watch it!!

"I'm so small" said the mole.
"Yes" said the boy, "but you make a huge difference".

Exactly, I'm always giving money to charity, but I never go on about it, or any of the other really nice and kind things I do on a daily basis.

To be honest if you're relying on the news for a feel good story to feel some way positive then you probably need to see a psychologist.

The great Alan Watts was even saying this in the 60s
    Most of us would have
    Rather money than tangible wealth
And a great occasion is somehow spoiled for us unless photographed
And to read about it the next day in the newspaper
Is oddly more fun for us than the original event
    This is a disaster
For as a result of confusing the real world of nature with mere signs
    We are destroying nature
We are so tied up in our minds that we've lost our senses
    Time to wake up!

Bang on the money, OP. Whats even worse are these vacous attention seeking nobodies like Una Healy posting and talking about every single, minor, insignificant thing that happens in her life as if anybody gives a flying fcuk about her body issues and her opinions on nature, relationships and how bread is sliced.
Its a sickness, narcissism but i dont think there is any cure.

I don't think anybody is relying on the news to bring a feel good story, more questioning why somebody would bemoan the news bringing a feel good story

There's a big difference between video of dog rescue and someone posting about, clothes, houses, what they had for dinner, how wonderful their kids/partners/pets are

I know which I'd prefer to watch. It was a nice story and made a change from hearing Covid news

Wait till you see the ones asking and wanting to get a pic with their doctor as he places the needle in their arm... #jabbedsafe... with a waiting room full of people, a busy and tired doctor ...but he or she just foaming at the gash imagining the likes and comments.... loving it, the attention...awhhh “sorry doctor can you just hold it a bit straighter to the light and I’ll get the reflection with the filter it looks cool, err sorry what, just get the **** out ? #totesmorto gawddddd”

A similar video popped up on my youtube recommended lately. A woman rescued a hypothermic dog who was wandering the streets in snow. Poor divil had been abandoned by his owners and looked like he was on his last legs. She took him inside, covered him up and planked a gas fire beside him. He made a good recovery......

Then I scrolled down and saw a bunch of animal rescues by the same person, millions of views a piece. I suppose it's a nice feel good thing in an otherwise lousy time, but you just get sick to the hole of the Like hunting and commodification of everything

Lugnaquilla. I once did a 18km loop walk of this same mountain, it is the highest peak in Leinster. Although there isn’t much of a peak, it’s fairly flat and vast on top. I was fairly bollix€d by the end and had sore legs for a week. This dog was very lucky to have somebody carry him down, he must be a posh dog.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,834 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

I don't mind people sharing the footage. What annoys me is the fact people are already thinking ahead while the actual incident is occurring. Know what I mean? People don't care to just embrace the moment... they have to think ahead while it's occurring.

You’ll probably have a situation , a doctor out for a meal with his wife.., man collapses at the table beside him, doctor rushes over trying to resuscitate him... he pauses though and says to his wife... “ Jesus, Bernie, are you just going to stand there watching me ? “ her : “ no sorry love I’ll call for an ambulance “
him : “ look in a minute, film me, on your phone... I’m about to maybe save a life here, no feck it, he’s dead, Bernie, BERNIE, put that phone away, good woman, no wait, maybe.., #itsoktolooseone, yeah, great Bernie, get my good side now”.

I was queueing for a coffee last week. Local little coffee trailer and a few people behind me (all socially distancing and masked up).

2 youngish ladies behind me (early 30's) and one has a baby in a pram. Conversation is along the lines of how little sleep she's getting and how tired she is.
Then I hear this...."ah not only am I exhausted but look what I came down to in the kitchen this morning (hands the phone to friend). The dog got sick and had diarrhea all over the floor"

The friend laughed and said "ah you poor thing"

My initial thought was "who the fcuk takes their phone out and starts taking pictures of dog shīt and vomit?"

Any time my dog has been sick or dropped a load on the floor the last thing on my mind is "must get a picture of this".

I saw that video of the couple who rescued the dog(on the journal.ie I think) on the mountain somewhere in Ireland. someone else was talking about it, I said where did you see it? on RTE news. :(

I and loads of people I know have done similar over the years with cats and dogs etc, never did I think oh wait I must record this and then upload it to tiktok or instagram, etc and put some soppy music with it, then just watch the likes shoot up.

Its like the time some Irish guy brought his taxi driver in Dubai into a theme park, nice thing to do you might say, no, he had to take pictures and then plaster them all over facebook looking for likes and praise.

Has no one ever heard of doing something and just keeping it to yourself?

It really makes me cringe to be honest.

    Yup
Its all about instant gratification these days, getting likes for being a gobshyte.

Were they 5kms from their home?....they were breaking restrictions....

Sure it doesnt matter..they saved a dog...

Must remember to rob a few pets when organising the next rave out the country

sure, great that the dog was found... BUT seems the dog got lost while the family wer out hiking on Lug.. Lug is a 12km loop hike..
so had they been adhering to the restrictions like the rest of us who are, the dog wouldn't have got lost in the first place...

Well, at least none of them needed mountain rescue to go out - risking the volunteers lives too!!!

Good news story for sure - poor Dog - glad she's ok - she doesn't know about covid - she's the only hero.. how she survived 2 weeks - legend.

No, its about having the correct information before you go off criticising others.

Nobody is perfect, as your errors show.

Bear that in mind before you crib about the owners!

Some people might have a negative view of people constantly using lol.

    LOL.
