Numbers increased steadily from the end of June, it was just that double a small number was still a fairly small number. In 5 weeks from mid June to late August the rate went up 6 times. In the next 5 weeks, when schools opened, it went up 4 times.

You obviously aren't interested in evidence.

Show me actual evidence of someone having caught covid in a pub / restaurant / barber shop / penneys / and Ill change my mind ...maybe our tracing system isnt up to that though :D:D

I do not know one person who has caught covid in any of these places - yet I know 3 people that caught it in a hospital.

So rather than vaccinate the people in long term care you want the staff vaccinated first?

You do realize that the residents in long terms care were done first, then frontline medical staff including those in long term care homes were next

Honestly, the outrage funfest thats going on in this forum is hilarious. So many people have literally a piece of a story and proceed to get outraged without knowing the full facts

how is it still rampant in care homes? the majority of cases are 85+ at the moment in care homes.

    can you explain that?

Ahh yes, your anecdotal evidence is much better than actual evidence.

Anyone I know caught it over Xmas, none of them were in hospital but they did get their hair done, have multiple dinners out an also hosted and visited family and friends in their own homes. Its in the community and anywhere that will have groups of people mixing will be at risk.

My hair dresser had a client sat in a chair one day only to get a phonecall to tell her her covid test was negative. So this client had kept her hair app knowing she was a confirmed close contact and was awaiting results. Some people are selfish but some are also plain thick.

If you haven't stayed in the same place for 5 or more days, with no other human contact, then you don't know where you contracted Covid.

Hospitals are easy like this, because people will spend days there, so it's easy to deduce that's where they caught it. People don't spend 5 days in 1 restaurant, so it's never going to be possible to know whether they caught it there or not, unless we're doing genomic sequencing of every single case.

Even the best test and tracing system in the world would only be making guesses without genomic investigation. I'm not sure if you're being purposely ignorant or if you still haven't grasped this concept, it's pretty straightforward to be honest.

Correction, it came in on a species, bat's are not the only origin.

It flew in alright but not on a bat. There was a contact tracing figure last summer that only 1% was travel related!

I don't think there's much risk of anything over Easter as in Ireland, other than chocolate egg consumption goes through the roof, it's pretty much a non-event.

The only big mingling family holiday in Ireland is Christmas and that's over.

I know loads of people who've been going for haircuts, dinner and drinks together throughout the entire pandemic and none of them got COVID, so that can't be it.

How would you know? They may not say or be asymptomatic.

Exactly. I know several people who got Covid who have no idea where they got it from. Contact tracing only goes back so far and can't trace everyone who was in a restaurant, was coughed over in Penneys, etc. Also a lot of people, who haven't been sticking to restrictions are being less than honest about their movements.

People are still getting haircuts having social dinners and drinking together
That is what is keeping numbers of positive tests high

Yep. Do we seriously think anyone is going to say "oh yes contact tracer, I've been letting some of my regular customers in the back door for a cut and highlights. Here's a list of their names and phone numbers"

No it'll be a disingenuous "gosh I don't know how I got it. I haven't been anywhere except Tesco and the park". Meanwhile her regular customers are walking around spreading it to family and friends and will also omit to mention, when they develop symptoms, that they've been visiting the hairdresser in secret.

Shouldn't the algorithm in the app, downloaded by well over a million people know that?

Don't give the saddos ideas. I have a family gathering planned for Easter. If the HSE is too incompetent to have over 65s vaccinated by then it's not my problem.

Yeah sure just invite the over 65s in your family, or in the extended networks of your guests, and blame the HSE like a saddo when that all goes t1ts up for those poor souls (not you, it's not your problem...).

    Party on ...

Are people going to be smart over Easter

Figures from the Dept of Foreign Affairs shows that 10,000 Irish residents returned here from holidays or visits abroad in just the last two and half weeks ...

Going by some of the replies in this thread - many of those who dont believe there is a problem / refuse to observe any restrictions / believe that there is no need to keep rates of infection down - are simply going to continue doing what they want.

Meanwhile the rest of the population will be mopping up the mess.

    Happy Easter people...

Head for UK as quick as possible as they will be mostly vaccinated by May. Doing over 65s at present and we are talking about over 85s!

At least we'll benefit from them flying through there programme. Between the border up North, lots of travel between us, and data on how it's working out for them :)

I only look at the numbers in hospital, not the daily numbers. I couldn't really care if 500 of the cases today are healthy 5-65 year who gets the virus and are asymptomatic. Once the vulnerable and over 65's are all vaccinated then no lockdown is needed. Hospitals and nursing homes are the main spreaders.

If we are at 1000 a cases a day and day and hospitals numbers are at flu like cases then its time to open up.

This whole 5KM thing is ridiculous and having everything closed for the last year is beyond ridiculous.

Proper restrictions and help and support for the elderly and vulnerable should have been introduced.

Never underestimate the stupidity and selfishness of the general public.

Including the self centred pondlife who not only have no scruples about flying off for a holiday in the sun, but also don’t mind wasting the time of dentists in their destination of choice and depriving them of income by cancelling their appointments as soon as their plane lands safely in Tenerife or wherever.

Nonsense, I'll live my life and the elderly and people with underlying conditions need to do more to protect themselves.

A big problem is the hospitals and nursing homes and something of been done earlier.
