Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Skirting board draft

With the recent breezy cold weather I noticed there is a slight draft coming up from the skirting boards behind 2 radiators in my house. Basically there is no seal between the wall and skirting board.

Now, I'm just wondering without having to take the radiators off the wall does anyone know of any hacks to try and seal it?

Hacky way. Painters caulk on the top skirt to wall joint, and pull back flooring and tape the skirt to floor with airtight tape.

    Real method find the source.

    E.g
Untubed vents , wall chases from attic into room.

I’ve no problem sealing the wall to skirting but I can’t get the gun behind the rad.

My only thought is to try and let the sealant drop down, hopefully land where I want it to and then try and tuck my finger under the rad and try smoothen it out.

  • Is this ground floor? If there is a large space beneath the floor boards there will always be a naturally occurring up draught.

I've had similar problems. (search my posts in DIY).

I'm not sure you can ever really stop the problem 100%. And you might just be pushing a draught somewhere else.

And as Listermint has suggested, best way is to find the source first.

Thanks I’ll have a look through your posts.

Yes indeed it’s the hallway rad near the front door. We originally had a porch and we ended up extending the hall out and installed a new door. However the slit behind the rad is an area of the hall that was not touched by the extension.

Use small amounts of earthwool (fibre insulation) and pack it into the gap using a long narrow implement (something like a long ruler or similar). Keep packing until the gap is fully filled to the top of the skirting. The key is to use small amounts at a time and not big clumps.

Thank you! I hadn’t thought of that at all.

Close the valves either side. Loosen the nuts snd you should be able to lift and drop the rad
