    Hi

Few years back, had a gate installed, at same time had 4 camera cctv put in, hikvision set up, all wired, all dome cameras.
We have 1 at the gate which is fine in general but we’d like to upgrade the quality of that camera. There is night vision for example but would never be able to tell a registration plate of a car passing our gate or turning at our gate

Similar for day time, sometimes a car / van may speed past the gate and registration cannot be identified. All well and good until one goes by at fast pace, stops, reverses a fair bit to use our entrance to uturn, reverses in to the gate when it’s closed, at angle you don’t see reg and pull away, out of shot (its happened 4 times in 5 years)

What are options, is it possible to just buy a single higher quality dome camera and swap the existing one out? Something that would have better night vision, show reg plates of passing cars and similar in day time, Realise might also need to increase storage space for holding higher quality video for as long..

Apologies if vague on detail of cameras, I’d have to go digging as didn’t see exact models or spec at the time, had qualified installer provide and install the whole package

Most cars at night the reg will be unreadable do to glare back. To get reg plate numbers you would need a ANPR camera. You may also need to upgrade your DVR to add this to the system. Have you asked installer?

You might find this useful - I use POE and replaced two hikvision by just reconnecting the cable to the new device.
Little bit of software install and reconfiguration with reolink...

Registrations would be difficult for most consumer cameras if the vehicle is at speed to be honest. They might capture a slow moving vehicle or someone just turning in at a slow pace. But above that you'd be quite lucky. Big things also are angle of camera and obviously daylight and glare not insignificant problems.

Start by checking the quality of the camera you have what models they are sensor size etc.

OP I do not think a Dome camera exists that has ANPR capabilities. There are technical challenges with regard to the ideal positioning of such a camera and GDPR issues if you are looking at an area which is not your property.

Your best option here is to have a discussion with a professional.

Here is an ANPR camera : https://www.hikvision.com/upload/20150812101300063.pdf

As regards GDPR, be very careful here :

A domestic CCTV system should only operate in a way that captures images of people within the perimeter of the CCTV operator’s own property including the garden or driveway. Systems operated in this way are not subject to data protection law due to the personal or household exemption in that law.

Thanks all - I just wanted to get some community input before speaking with installer again to explore potential options. Appreciate the quick responses
