Hi my Wife and I are expecting our first baby and are located almost the same difference from Waterford University Hospital and Dublin...

Kilkenny seems to be consistenty understaffed so have ruled that out..

Weighing up whether to go through the Coombe or Waterford...?
Has anyone some recent experience of either?

Also weighing up private vs semi private...but location is the big factor...
Not due till Oct / Nov so hopefully covid restrictions will be less severe..

    Congratulations!

I don't have any experience of those 2 hospitals but had a similar dilemma in whether to go to Tralee General which was closer to me and similar size to Waterford or Limerick Maternity hospital. I went to Limerick Maternity in the end.

Go to the coombe without question. Waterford is not a maternity hospital. It's fine if your wife has a straightforward and uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery. If things go wrong though and either mother or baby need specialist care you need to be in a maternity hospital. There is just no comparison.

I've had 2 babies in the coombe privately and couldn't recommend it enough. My consultant both times was Professor Michael OConnell, master of the coombe. I just had my most recent 2 weeks ago when covid restrictions were at their strictest, so no visitors after for the few days, but it was fine. Nurses and staff are amazing.
Dr Oconnell does a combined package with your gp so it's slightly cheaper than most private consultants so that might suit you? He's currently €2400 and you do some appts with your gp, and then in with him too for others. He does 2 scans before 12 weeks and then your 12 week scan which includes your appt with the nurse.
If you want any more info just let me know.

    Congratulations.

Am currently private in the Coombe with Dr Farah, who delivered my second child, she's fantastic and also took very good care of me during a recent miscarriage.

I was public with my first son and had an emergency section with Dr. O'Connell, who was brilliant - he stepped in after things got hairy. If he wasn't there it could have been a very different outcome.

Personally, after a bad labour experience, I wouldn't go public again. The staff are brilliant in the Coombe but I found that the continuity of care was much better in the private system.

Dr Farah is fabulous. I have attended her privately as a gyny after baby number 1. Lovely manner :)
My consultant on baby 2 and 3 said she did a great job on the procedure I attended her for.
Would of gone to her for baby 2 and 3 but found her secretary hard to get hold of!!!
