Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Up a good few quid myself this week (thanks to the great tipping here) and decided to do a 50 luck 31

Cash out or let it ride on autonomy?

I agree. Well done all - the interactions and tips etc here added to the week in no small part!

    Cash that out my man.

I normally hate cash out but for the sake of a tenner and if he gets done on the line you'd be sick. Enjoy your winnings. Well done

Anyone know how many places Bet365 were paying in the last race? It says 5 on their website, and also on oddschecker when you check the race time and results but I seem it has been settled to 4 places?

yes, I missed out on the 66/1 5th placer in the last from Aidan as well. Appears the 5th place was enhanced which I assumed was enhanced for everybody but obviously not. I was doing so many bets this morning I don't recall what it said when I placed it but assume it was only the 4 and not 5.

Great day though the only dark spot for me was ABP on the gold cup - a lot of people on here picked a lot of winners during the week

Well done to the winners on here some good tipping really enjoyed the races overall Rachel did great but I would say she is gutted over the gold Cup would be easier to take if something she would never been near won it but that's racing .

Get onto them. They did it to me as well. On the off they were paying 5 places WITHOUT an enhanced place.
Their initial result showed that it paid 5 places. They changed it while they were talking to me.
They settled it in my favour

Very enjoyable week again this year.

Already excited for next year again.

Hats off to Rachel Blackmore, the star of the show this year.

Great week, like many on here I am nicely up for the first Cheltenham in years and pretty much all down to some great tipping on this forum, hat tip to all and in particular Chesty and the Kid for some super shouts over the week!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 556 ✭✭✭Fine Cheers

Yes indeed thanks everyone. First time really to give the week a rattle and really enjoyed it. As a big sorts fan it certainly helped to fill.a void and have learned a fee things too. Kept it relatively low key on a €100 a day budget and ended up in the black this evening, largely down to Flooring Porter and some of Twitter Aidan's placed long shots. There's some buzz watching your pick go hell for leather.
Same time same place next year ??

I was lucky enough to end up with a bit of profit for the week and it’s great to see that many here did also. For me I enjoyed, as I do every year, looking through the races and trying to find a few winners. I’d like to think I’d still enjoy that process even if I didn’t get any winners, which has happened to me a few years I should add! I wouldn’t claim to be an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but after developing a big interest in horse racing in the last number of years, and really getting the Cheltenham bug, I feel like I’ve learned a little bit.

I felt there was some really good stuff here this week though, and it truly was a memorable one. Let’s hope we’ll all be back next year!

I'm happy to see Blackmore as top jock. That's what I'll remember from this year's Cheltenham Festival (apart from the few who ran well, and those who didn't :p ) . Won't really care about top trainer, or any of that rubbish - whether or not Henry was the 'moral' winner (he was) , but Willie got it on merit through a "technicality" as the pundits like to say. It's a festival; not a "Trainer's Championship" , so goes on winners and nothing else - not prizemoney/not the most 'Blue Riband' wins, and if scores are tied, then it goes to places.

But overall, I think Rachael's six (joint record with Ruby I think) shades it , and in a close second comes howareyakid's 6 winners on Champion Chase day :) , including a 33/1, 14/1, and 17/2 shot. Can't see that ever being beat on here..

A favourable mention to all those who picked Jeff Kidder - some shout that.. Must've been biggest priced winner of the week..

And the lows; well to hell with them, but number 1 has got to be ITV's disgraceful treatment of the World's greatest NH jockey...

Can only hope nxt year is as good, and we can be in the Pub or Bookies; or at least have the option :)

ITV were presenting the 'Ruby Walsh' (think that's the name) Trophy to Rachael after the 2nd last, and before the last race...

The pr1cks were (Chamberlain or Bell) wondering if they would have time before coverage was over.. It was all "Hurry Hurry... Rush.. Come on Rachael... We've hardly any time left" etc,,, So just as Rachael was up on the rostrum (having rushed to get there, and her with an upcoming ride) , and about to receive the trophy from 'Sir' :P AP; what happens - cue the intro/outro rubbish... We didn't even get to see the presentation, and Rachael wasted her time..

Plenty of time for the crap outros/jingles/credits rolling/Chapman walking about  If it was gushing Bryony, you can be guaranteed ITV would've held off from finishing up.. Not to mention that Cumani didn't say much earlier when she was sort of asked her opinion on Rachael's six winners... Shower of kernts

As much as i love to slag the sh!t out of RTE for their general uselessness, there's really no comparison between their coverage and itvs. ITV are technically very good but take Ruby out of it, and its hard to listen to. Chamberlain is annoying, cumani should stick to the flat, AP & Fitz - no thanks. Luke is ok, likeable chap, but 4 days of chapman is way too much, 4 minutes is about my tolerance level for him. Makes me rue the days i was often harsh on john mcririck. He was a thorough professional compared to the buffoon chapman. Bet Rachael was sick of the site of him by Tuesday evening!

ITV coverage is total amateur hour stuff. Snazzy camera angles, dramatic music and Ed fücking Chamberlain. It’s like they’re trying to educate 5 year olds. The standard of racing coverage on the mainstream channels is awful compared to Channel 4 racing.

McCririck, Francome, Catermole and Jim McGrath were absolutely brilliant. It was proper racing coverage aimed at proper racing people. The Morning line on a Saturday was great viewing and always informative. Look what was served up to people this week, two muppets in the “social stable” I mean come on. It really is hard to believe that with all the advances in media in the last decade that on Gold Cup day, the coverage would feature a 2 minute segment on those pair of tits laughing and joking over an ice bath?

To be fair it’s hard to say anything overly negative about the week we’ve just witnessed. I’ve never seen anything like the performances we’ve seen this week. Punchestown could be the best week’s racing we’ll likely ever see. With the prize money on offer that week I’d expect quality on a par if not better than what we saw this week. I lost county of how many races where the Irish form all tied in together with horses spread right across the week. I hope people will start to appreciate what we have in this country. I genuinely think the last four days will get people back going racing in Ireland.

"It was proper racing coverage aimed at proper racing people."

Spot on and that's the perfect description of halcyon days of C4 coverage of 90s, early 00s. Brough Scott & Alastair Down too. The dumbing down under itv has been a very conscious thing, been very obviously driven towards the casual viewer to the point of lacking any depth whatsoever. Just thinking about the exchanges between Ruby and davy russel on rte during the dublin racing festival, that was proper racing coverage. You'd think you might get at least a faint flicker of that between ruby and ap, but i dont think mccoy has that much to offer at all.

Some great tips/ante post hits from those who would consider themselve's "regulars" here. You know who you are.

The Regular v Blowin' nonsense seems to have calmed down the last two years( with the exception of some late learners).

The sense of freedom this year ( as opposed to the protective b.s. of being a "regular") has lead to tips that have never been so productive.

We have had a poster who picked 6 of 7 winners on one day. We have had a poster who showed how "place only" bets can pay and win. S/he also helped those who may not have been familiar of such bets.

This year has seen a softening of the "blow in" rhetoric.

Well done "Chesty" Silver medal, and "'The Kid" Gold medal. Aidan can always put his tips here. Some had to ask how to find him.

    It's about beating the bookie...

Or, as one regular here said, "you love to see it"!

That's the spirit I want to see from a regular!

Great weeks racing. Cachun, Envoi and Concertista getting over turned made a balls of a few accas. Still managed a loss of about 30 quid for the week. Breffini Boy today in the 2.40 will make it all right.

Now it begins again, looking at every race and trying to figure out where they will end up. You could possibly have Envoi and Monkfish in the Gold Cup next year.

Do miss the old channel 4 team for the coverage overall at least this year no Brian Gleeson which for me was a bonus .

Well done everyone, great week. I hadn't been on the forum in a while and I forgot how good it could be . It's still far from the old days here where aidan, rossom, PC and many more were regular posters. The craic and analysis was superb then. Hard belive a soccer world cup killed it.
Hopefully people might stick with the forum and hopefully it gets the freedom it needs to flourish.
This game is about opinions the more the better.

Well done to chesty and the kid for your unbelievable bets. Superb. Aidankkk is just special.i always look at his views as they can be informative and we like similar style bets. I find it easier identify over priced horses at double figures.

I had a winning week mainly due to Jeff kidder.
Few big priced places. Again I gave more than I should have back to the bookies with some stupid bets.
I must look up my Cheltenham do's and don't s post from a few years ago n reread my own advice.
Some amazing performances this week and I think the novices and the bumper first n second could be special.

But the take away from the week was Rachel. I knew she was really good. I didn't realise she is a superstar. Best I have seen in the saddle since Ruby. She was perfection this week and is undoubtedly now the best jock around.

B.t.w.., The Midlands Grand National ( with a good follow up card at Utt.) is combined today with a decent Kemp. card.

IF you are a few pennies ahead this week, have a look.

A few pennies behind, have a look too! You all know the form by now.

    Best of Luck.

Thurles, too. Wexford seems to be all NHF races which to me seems like madness.

Someone start a thread. We can all go on a slow taper from Cheltenham rather than being cut off straight away.

With help from this thread starting with a £20 opening balance. (I did not deposit another penny) I managed to have a bet on every race over the 4 days.
Withdrew £200 in winnings and still have £19.62 to go again today.
Thanks to all for your input.
Tell a lie I deposited £10 into an 888 new punter account but that is for the Cheltenham bookies offers thread.
    Thanks again guys.

There's been a few all bumper cards and i'd say that'll continue for a while yet to give trainers a chance to get experience into young horses as point to point scene continues to be on hold. Not for betting purposes unless you're firmly in the know - goes without saying!

Same here complete amateur punter - put €10 a day on my paddy power app opened up with a win of €13.75 on a €5 7/4 stake. Had the shunter in in the handicap chase and made €95 on that. For the gold cup had €10 win on A plus Tard and €10 on Minella Indo each way. So made just shy of €50 on that. Had a few small wins on each way punts. At the end I had €0.72 left on my app and put it on Galopin de Champs in the last race. Finished with a whopping €6.48 win.

All in all I put €30 on the app (missed day one) and cashed out €130. Not bad.

Yeah. Saying, it "seems like madness" is from the perspective of someone who knows how to type in the racing post web address and little more.

At the very least, talking to my Mam, we said we'd go to a Point to Point when they're back on. She was saying she loves being down be a fence and watching the horses jump.

Growing up i remember how huge point to points were, as a social occasion as much as racing. Seemed like the whole town was there. Great memories of 3 card hucksters, trying to hit the spade on the ace of spades with a dart, salty chips with lashings of vinegar and ketchup, swiggin the dregs of flat porter in the bar, watching oul fellas trying to figure out the form which, in pre internet days, was well nigh impossible. Could watch them run out into the countryside on one side, then hare it across to the other to see them take the last and sprint to the finish. Dont think it's quite the same anymore, but still a great day out and the lifeblood of the sport here.

I only ever went as a kid. Standing around and climbing up on a parade ring made of lashed together cattle gates. Looking at the horses with no clue what the indicators were but being fully convinced they were going to win (until they ran.) Standing up on a hill watching as much of the course as you could, having to listen to the guys with binoculars to find out anything as they ran behind trees and the back of the course, because the guy with the microphone was either useless, or the speakers were useless and you couldn't make out a thing. The odd drunk fella after winning seeing some seven year olds, wanting to share his luck and giving you 20p to buy some sweets which you definitely didn't buy but lumped on a horse. Your parents' friends looking out for you by the end of the day, and trying to round up all the kids with a promise of chips and a maybe a sausage, "If you stay put."

I put a pound on a horse once. The P2P bookie was happy to take it as well. Of course, I won (or placed, one of the few I can remember from those days) and the bookie was very hesitant at paying out £3.50 to a seven year old. He wanted to give me a lecture about the dangers of gambling. I was gearing up for an argument in what surely would be a whiny voice when all the people placing bets told him to pay out. "You were happy to take the money, now pay out." And all the other bookies laughing at him as he was unable to get a word in. I did buy sweets with that win. From a plastic picnic table set up at the back of a van. I bought sweets for all my friends, and a can of coke for me and the best buddy, and looked forward to the day I could be a grown up and celebrate in the beer-marquee that looked like great craic.

My juvenile punting strategy was simple - and very non productive. On the racetrack it was back everything with L.Piggott next to its name, regardless of price. At points it was PP Hogan. So i might invest 10 or 20p on a horse at 1/3 and more often than not, they'd lose. On my first ever visit to the curragh, i managed to p!ss off all my bothers and sisters by tipping every Piggott shortie which were all well beaten. I'd have been better off putting it all on the three card trick guy, he might have taken some pity on me!
