This really is a pain in the face. What am I going to do with all the beer in the fridge.

Share it with the missus while you binge watch Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Just kidding. Drink it all yourself and tell her to keep up a steady supply of snacks while you watch the other 3 matches.

Boynes Karl Martin secured his first professional Academy contract with Montpellier
Played 3 years of Leinster u18 clubs and Ireland u18s.
While still u18 and in school was playing u20 club rugby

Big surprise, has been tipped for a while as a player with a lot of potential.

That's a big loss. One of the standout prospects at underage and still only 18.

Hope he goes well over there all the same.

    Very much so.
And as a clubs player its a bigger shame as not as many come through.

Crazy to think still only 18. played his first irish 18s game when only 15 and a half...

Does his age mean he's on a shorter pathway to potential qualification for France were he to make it that far?

Qualification is same length for everyone regardless age you start but moving at this age if he stays in france makes him jiff qualified and more valuable to french teams

Exactly, the same as Sarries have.

Why would Saracens have an asterisk next to their Champion’s Cup star?

    I suppose short answer :

There is no salary cap for h cup. However your domestic finishing result has a massive impact on how you are treated in the pool draws for the next year (potentially letting you skip being knocked out by the top teams early on). So repeatedly cheating in your domestic league does in fact give an advantage to your team.

Didn't covid ravaged Toulon play Lyon last week and now Lyon are playing Exeter this week. Intresting.

    Indeed.

And on a more basic level, in order to qualify for the HEC at all you have to achieve a certain ranking in your domestic league, relative to other teams in that league.

If you break the rules of that league to develop, assemble and/retain your players, competing against teams that play by the rules to get entry into the HEC in the first place, we'll, an asterisk should be the least of it.

So Leinster have a let down today and a rest while Exeter assuming they win tomorrow and then play us with a 6 day turnaround.

    Must be to Leinster's advantage

Just read in the42 that there was no academy spot for Martin! Why not? Have the filled next years positions? Why would the IRFU not try to set him up with another province.

Likely financial due to budgets, probably thought they could get away with having him in the sub-academy for a year, as well as Tim Corkery joining the full academy.

In general the Irish provinces prefer to leave front row players in the sub academy for a year longer to physically develop before the academy.

Not sure. Having a high pressure game against a tough opponent is something that Leinster maybe could have done with.

Karl Martin is an outside back though and was playing clubs 20s though still underage for u18s. 3 years of irish 18s as well.

Nonsense, To win the HCup, the top players will have had to play 6 or 7 weeks of the highest intensity knockout rugby in a row
A week off with no injury or suspension concerns is a massive advantage

People talk about a 1 day turnaround difference being an advantage, a 15 day turnaround is a huge advantage

Exeter could well be down a couple of key players next week because of this weeks game, Leinster have all their first choice players fresh and ready to go.

Hardly nonsense. There's general recognition of being undercooked in sport, particularly in a contact sport. And last week wasn't the highest intensity of matches.
However, Leinster is known for training at high intensity. Hopefully that's enough.

Do you not think a lot of the leinster players are coming off the back of nearly 8 weeks of high intensity matches??

He's under 20 again next season and would've played next to no rugby this season, with Osborne joining the academy they likely wouldn't take two centres at the same time

In the pack? No, apart from Healy and Porter. Sure, Keenan has played every minute for 8 weeks, but that's not going to be the winning and losing of a match.

Henshaw was pretty flogged over 6 nations. He absolutely could be the winning and losing of this game.

From a Leinster perspective for every player who could do with a break there was another who could use the game time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Leinster will benefit far more from the week off than having played against a big, physical Toulon pack.

There are very few Leinster players who lack game time at all at this point. Even someone like ROL who wasn't involved in the 6N at all had played 80 minutes for 5 consecutive weeks before this one.

The only guys who haven't had lots of game time are the fringe Irish guys like Baird and Ruddock and I would have very little concern about them being undercooked given they've been fully fit and looked exceptionally physical during their appearances.

Every other Leinster player named in our team has had a workload ranging from solid to extremely heavy in the last 6 weeks.

The coaches will be delighted to get a week off at the business end of the season to rest up, get an extra training session or two in etc. Normally they wouldn't start their preparation for Exeter until Monday but I'd imagine they were well aware of this situation yesterday morning and were already readying sessions and analysis for the players based around Exeter.

Normally Leinster play the qtr at the end of the 6 nations. Last season because of covid they didn't, when the league started back up they didn't really get battle hardened with the games they played so that was the issue

The majority of the players have been up against good teams in the 6 nations and then straight into a game v Munster. A week off for Henshaw etc at this stage would be welcome, the pity is the game wasn't called off on Wednesday so they could have started to prepare earlier for the game,

I doubt Exeter will be overjoyed they have a week off and fully expect that been used if Leinster win

Seeing this Munster/Toulouse game I think I really underestimated how good Leinster were last week. De Allende has wreaked havoc in midfield today and Beirne, when he was on, was a menace at the breakdown. They were anonymous last weekend.
