Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I saw some highlights and interviews from Ireland's 0-0 draw with Spain in Seville in November 1992 a while ago and I'd forgotten how well Ireland had played especially John Aldridge. If his goal had stood it would be one of our finest moments.

What I'd completely forgotten was that he had played for Real Sociedad for two seasons before that, until a recent article about it in The Guardian.

The first non-Basque to play for them and he was a huge success. Still well loved there now apparently.

He was speaking fluent Spanish in the interviews with local press after that game in Spain, something many players from Ireland and the UK find as a barrier to playing on the mainland, even more so back then.

    Legend.

dalian seemed like a bit of a character.

“I remember we were going to Burgos, away. ‘Mitxelo, what’s Burgos like?’ ‘Small ground, small city, cold.’ ‘Ah, then I’m not going.’ And he didn’t.”

“He would cover his legs in Vaseline and say, ‘That’s my warm up done’,” Mitxelo says.

    here's aldridge going mad

    ye dickhead :pac:

some record for liverpool. 50 goals in 83 league games. and 33 in 63 for Sociedad.

Very good article. Stumbled upon it myself through one of my news feeds the other day.

For anyone interested in it, here it is here.

Man, that is a very good very sad article.
Tragic what happened to Dalian in the end.

Barca won the European Cup the next season.

Dalian Atkinson almost won the Premier League with Villa in '93.

    Aldo went to Tranmere Rovers.
