Was just watching a clip on RTE archives about Gay Byrne being appointed to the RTE Authority in in 1990, at the same time Pat Kenny was chairman of Atlantic 252, you can't imagine nowadays Tubridy or D'Arcy getting such jobs.

Those roles (chairman/board member) aren’t managerial, they are governance and typically part time (as in no more than a day or two a month). That said, Gay Byrne was producer of the Late Late Show, in later years. In State bodies there is normally a requirement for staff members to be appointed to the board. Robert Shortt is the current staff board member at RTÉ.

Didn't the RTE Authority have kind of a BAI role over RTE back then ? Seems like a major conflict of interest

    Others have moved from Broadcasting.

Richard Dowling and Brian Dowling are now in their communications unit, FoI and Corporate comms AFAIK, having presented news and current affairs programming previously.

Ryle Nugent is really the only former Executive at RTÉ that was also front of screen, while also heading up Sports (Though he was not on the executive board).
