100% agree. To complain about the number of mentions he is getting in tweets is childish and IMO shows a total immaturity.

More worried about how many times Harris is mentioned in tweets than dealing with our health problems.

I know it's easy to give out about everything government ministers do but surely this latest nonsense shows the man isn't up to the job? This happened in January- our overall peak of covid to date. You would think that our minister for health would have his hands full with that, but no, he's combing through tweets to see how often he's mentioned and throwing a strop because Simon Harris is mentioned more.

Donnelly used an interesting phrase on Morning Ireland regarding the vaccines - something along the lines of "80% of people will be in a position to be offered the vaccine"

Up to now I've only heard "offered the vaccine". Is this a watering down of the target? Will they open up the booking portal at the end of June and therefore you are "in a position to be offered"
Yes, and I don't think that's any secret. There will be people who will book themselves in during June and won't get it till early July, and they'll be counted in the 80%.

But there's nothing more nefarious than that. I've seen hysterics claim that they will "offer" vaccines that they don't have and people won't get vaccinated till October.

    Which is nonsense.

They use the word "offered" for the simple reason that they can't force people to take it. If they say "80% will be vaccinated" and they miss that target because people don't take the vaccine, then they'll be dragged over hot coals. If they "offer" it to 80% and only 70% take it up then they can say they hit their target.

Yeah but what about the "in a position to be". These guys choose their words carefully

It bothers him because Twitter is his chosen medium whereas Harris will have a chat with a three legged dog. He's also too eager to please and to make an impression. A lot of the "tough" decisions have his worldview all over them.

Hard to justify Golf as essential.
But then if you allow it, based on it being outdoors and played solo, then they have to allow a whole lot of outdoor solo activities:
    Kayaking
    Surfing
    Paddle boarding
    Horseback riding
    Archery
    Scuba diving
    Fishing
    Windsurfing
    Sailing
    Diving
    etc...

Or is golf allowed as as it on private property?
So 2 guys meeting up in a garden with 2 hurleys, a flag, a flaggan of cider and a hole dug out can be classed as golf.... once they use a gold ball of course.
Once something is allowed, then it's always up for bending the rules etc....

For the greater good, who really gives a **** about golf?

None of these things should have ever been closed to begin with.

scuba diving was allowed with one other person within your 5km (otherwise your cft insurance was invalid) apart form golf /tennis or where you need club facilities. the only limit was the 5km and the households .

Israel study says SA variant can "bypass" the Pfizer vaccine to a certain extent.

Assuming we vaccinate an average of 25k per day for the rest of April, 35k per day in May and 40k per day in June we will reach 80 shots per 100 total or about 55% of people having got at least one shot by the 30th of June.

To get to 80% of people getting at least one shot we will need to get to 115 shots per 100. We have 79 days until the end of June. To get to 115 per 100 (we are currently at 21 per 100) we will need to vaccinate an average of 42k people per day starting from now. This week the HSE are boasting about vaccinating 190k, that's only an average of 27k. We need to start hitting 300k per week very soon to hit the 80% "offered" a vaccine by the end of June.

Not boasting, anticipating, all based on supplies.

Not quite. As usual the media have taken the worst part of it and left out very important context. There's a thread here from one of the authors of the study that adds clarity. Please read it to the end. It does show reduced efficacy against B.1.351, however this seems to be limited to a window 7-14 days after the second dose. There were no incidents of vaccine breakthrough after this period.

It wasn't disclosed in the study as there were so few infections of vaccinees that its statistically meaningless.

They had two big outbreaks in BC Canada , one in Whistler and one in Revelstoke ski resorts . They quickly closed both down and within days had an online booking and are vaccinating the whole town this week . Everyone of 18 will be vaccinated very quickly and it nipped in the bud before it spreads . Anyone who is resident or working in the town is eligible .Thats how to do it maybe and pounce on an outbreak straight away

I'm not sure how effective that will be - it takes a few weeks for the vaccine immunity to kick in.

Locked down the slopes , closed all restaurant , closed all facilities and no one allowed out except to shop for a month .I think its the best they could do in the circumstances .

They were Covid free until the powers that be allowed the slopes to open and people flooded in from all sorts of places . They had the Brazilian variant and needed to stop it spreading

One of my friends is in BC working in a ski resort, he tested positive this week along with everyone he works/lives with.

Isn't this what people mean when they say fake news?

I've read online from several "established" media who were basically saying that pfizer vaccine might not work on S.A varient.

Clearly, none of these news sites do any sort of research, all about getting the headline out as quickly as possible in order to get the "clicks".

Sad what journalism has become these days.

I despise that term, but I think it's quite apt for this.

    Journalism is gone to shíte.

Hospitals at 227 this morning, of which 50 are in ICU.

By this time next week we should be solidly under 200 in hospital and under 50 in ICU.

These are both key numbers that I think will force Martin to address the schedule for reopening with a greater level of certainty.

On the 19th they'll announce the vaccine booking system is open. At that stage, "You'll be able to go play sports next Monday, and then we'll see after that", just won't be good enough. People want details now.

Has that number increased? Could have sworn it was at 209 a few days ago.
