    These last 2 journalists are clueless. Ridiculously stupid questions.

    The funniest part is you could've probably posted that any day over the last 14 months and it would've been valid.

    Anyone give a breakdown of what's being asked at the conference?

    No, the ones saying numbers are like they were in December before the January surge and what’s changed between then and now. No acknowledgement of the vaccines which is the plainly obvious answer.

    Ah. That’s just to get the Taoiseach on the record saying that. Seems stupid I agree but it’s so it can be referred back to in a number of weeks time whether it goes well or if it goes tits up.

    ‘Where are the levels gone?’

    GREAT question

    True. And there’s another one at it now trying to get him to give exact figures as to what would constitute running in to difficulty again.

    Journalists desperate for a number to stick in headline

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,599 ✭✭✭eigrod

    The line of questioning is so moronic - "what about the cases cases cases" that Martin is actually comporting himself well: "We have to consider other variables like hospitalisations & ICU admissions".

    Exactly. Cases mean very little now if they’re not giving rise to serious illness and deaths due to the vaccine effect.

    Hopefully it won't be long before all these dots are blown northwest..
    551785.png551783.png

    I'll include here the python code I used (caveat: my python is pretty crap, so you can most likely find/do better) if anyone's interested in tweaking it. The csv file I used (from https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus-source-data) has oodles of info to play with.
    # import necessary modules and change font size
    import pandas as pd
    import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
    plt.rcParams.update({'font.size': 5})

    # read in the data
    df = pd.read_csv('owid-covid-data.csv')

    # This should be doable in one step, I'm sure, but it's eluding me.
    # Ditches awkward NaNs and then grabs only the info we want,
    # and ignores all but the most recent day for a country.
    # There's waaay more data in the csv file to play around with, just
    # choose the columns you are interested in.
    df_no_nan = df.dropna(subset = ['new_cases_smoothed_per_million','people_vaccinated_per_hundred']).copy()
    new_df = df_no_nan[['iso_code','continent','location','new_cases_smoothed_per_million','people_vaccinated_per_hundred']].drop_duplicates(subset=['iso_code'], keep='last').copy()

    # These guys plot the graph
    ax = new_df.plot(x='new_cases_smoothed_per_million', y='people_vaccinated_per_hundred', style='o', markersize=1,legend=None)
    new_df[['new_cases_smoothed_per_million','people_vaccinated_per_hundred','iso_code']].apply(lambda row: ax.text(*row),axis=1);
    plt.xlabel("Average cases per million over the last week")
    plt.ylabel("Total people vaccinated per hundred")
    plt.show()

    # If you want just the Europe data, you can use this - though there's
    # undoubtedly a better way
    eur_df = new_df.loc[new_df['continent'] == 'Europe']
    # and then run the graph commands above (with eur_df instead of new_df)

    No Donnelly at the press conference. They really don’t want him in front of a mic if at all possible.

    Enjoyed that exchange about Coppers to be honest.

    Leo undercutting MM saying that it has an outdoor area and balcony gave me a genuine laugh.

    I know some will cringe but it’s great we’re in a position to ask about nightclubs again.

    Between Harris with his '18 other Covids' and Donnelly 'There are 31 days in June' Minister's of Health have a habit for sticking their foot in their mouths.

    Let me draw your attention to these anomalies: are you worried about people paying too much attention to these anomalies?

    Question was about night clubs, ‘people are mad to go back to Coppers’.

    Micheal: “I don’t think I’ll be in Coppers anytime soon.”

    Leo (speaking to Micheal) “Coppers does have a large outdoor area and balcony so you might be there sooner than you think.”

    A poster recently likened his charisma and charm to a bag of dog **** swinging in a tree

    Kind of accurate

    Did they confirm the 7th of June for the cinema or "June" ?

    "... preparation for the safe reopening of cinemas and theatres in June subject to public health advice" is on the Path Ahead document on the govt. site.

    Happy either way :) cinema in June, holy moly!

    Any mention of returning to the office? Or is working from home to remain where possible? Don't see any mention of it.
