Case numbers are a prediction of future hospital and Icu numbers. It takes a while to translate but if you wait for hospital numbers to go up its like being in a fight and wait til you are after being punched to start a block.

Its all about hospital and Icu capacity and numbers.

so why were we living with severe restrictions all of last Summer despite numbers being in single digits??

This is how a progressive, innovative and smart country with pragmatic, effective leaders adapt and drive forward as the pandemic continues.

Meanwhile in Ireland, stuck with a stale NPHET and Government, we may get to move 10km from our house for exercise until June if we’re lucky. Laughable if it wasn’t so serious.

They're all seem to be wearing masks that give better protection as well. Knowing ourselves they'd be people giving out about masks because they have a negative test.

Tell that to the relatives of the 75000 people who died from Covid-19 in Spain

The article refers to the fact that the reproductive rate (r rate) of the virus here which now is at 1.3

On effect what that means is that for every one cases - there is 1.3 new cases - so the number of cases start to rise and that's not good.

Looking at the stats - the r rate has been rising since early March and is just now at the point where case numbers start to rise again.

That and our case numbers have remained stubbornly high for some time with the higher transmissibility of the UK strain identified as a significant factor in that.

The two things going for us atm is that vaccinations are continuing to increase albeit slowly. And that the new strain has been here since January meaning its already infected a considerable number but we still have a considerable number of people who are at risk.

Looking at Europe - several countries such as Poland, Italy, Germany only now experiencing the impacts of the UK strain and things there really aren't looking good - with new restrictions and lockdowns now increasingly been put in place.

500k of the most vulnerable and those most likely to end up in hospital have got at least 1 shot at this stage. We're wasting our time vaccinating if the only obsession will remain with case numbers.

There remains a considerable number who are vulnerable and not vaccinated. That include the elderly and older age group yet to receive a first shot in some cases to a larger number still awaiting their second. Group four which are those aged between 16 - 69 who are medically very high risk are only starting to be vaccinated.

Case numbers are an indicator of future hospital admissions. And the thing is - its not only the vulnerable ending up needing critical care in hospital with data over the last year suggesting that between 37% and 73% of those in hospital with covid have no underlying conditions.

so why were we living with severe restrictions all of last Summer despite numbers being in single digits??

    Last summer people were idiots.

We was trying to drive the numbers real low and then slowly open up to find a potential steady state. It was a strategy. It might have worked.

Once they had a steady state level they could have held restrictions there semi permanently until vaccines came around.

It didn't work out. Numbers started growing and we kept opening up locking us into this yoyo cycle of restrictions and relaxations.

There's so much pent up demand in society that any relaxations will be very temporary or very small until a mass get vaccinated.

The restrictions last summer were clearly not severe enough or we would still be in single digits.

Hospital admissions at the moment are around 4.5%-5% of cases.

Last October it was around 5%-5.5%.

We've made progress but enough. So many people vaccinated with a single shot without full protection and in the first week or two where protection hasn't kicked in yet.

We are not at the point where we can say let's invite a wave of cases over the next few weeks.

We were not "living with severe restrictions all of last summer". This claim has been called out for the nonsense it is many times and yet you persist in constantly peddling it. Why?

While that is encouraging I have to say it is very sad to see these people with those stupid masks on them. Like really? 5,000 people packed into a venue and then you make them wear these idiot things? I guess that rule was made by people who have never been at a concert that wasn't Bach in their lives.

So in a sense it is a positive development but at the same time it also shows how deep that rabbit hole we're in really is.

It must be awful to be trying to live with this virus. 5000 at a concert, with negative tests and masks...

What are we allowed here? Oh no wait. Lockdown is the better option here.

I'm afraid they are my own maths.

Its hospital admissions per the HSE dashboard for two recent weeks divided by cases 10 days prior and the same for two weeks in October.

I've probably missed something but I can't find mm offical star to compare too.

.....not to mention the fact that we are hemorrhaging construction workers to the UK and Northern Ireland, most will not come back!! So we are decimating our Construction sector for years to come ! Why are the Government not able to see this? Why are we the only country with construction closed? Why are journalists and Miriam O Callaghan/Matt Cooper/Claire Byrne not asking these hard questions until they get an answer?

It remains that approx 40 per cent of the construction industry are working, with construction permitted on major FDI projects, schools and hospitals.

I dont pretend to understand all the reasons behind the current restrictions - however I do find much of the endless whinging about "will someone not think about the houses!" to be disingenuous at best.

During the last recession- construction and housing demand fell through the floor and didn't pick up again until there was an economic recovery. Which tbf once started was at full stretch very quickly.

Builders affected during that period also emigrated as they were right to do but they also came back in large numbers when it did so.

Yes there's always a need for new housing - however it's not like everyone is living on the streets atm. Priority is being given to allow kids back in school - even if that is going to keep out case numbers up and to keeping covid related heathcare services running smoothly.

I'd prefer to see some kept restrictions in place rather than ending up back with crazy numbers of new cases by opening up a whole bunch of things all at once.

From what I can see, it looks like they’re going to keep everything closed until schools finish up in June. They’re going to keep kicking the can down the road with everything else, so they don’t have to close the schools again.
It’s now clear that absolutely nothing meaningful is going to be opened until mid June, shortly before the schools finish up.

After this mornings kite flying I would imagine they will delay construction till May, and non essential retail will return 6 weeks after that in mid June.
This will conveniently coincide with the schools wrapping up for the summer holidays.

I wish they would just come out and be honest about it rather than giving people false hope and stupid lengthy 6 week extensions in between reviews when it’s quite clear now they have no intention of opening anything any time soon.
They won’t do it though, because they know there will be mass opposition to it.
So instead we will have to endure another two months of drip feeding and kite flying. There is just no accountability whatsoever when it comes to this government.

It’s absolutely soul destroying that we are going to spend longer in lockdown this year than we did in 2021, the first 6 months of the year are a total write off even though this year we have the benefit of hindsight, a lot more knowledge, and of course the vaccines.

We were in full lockdown from mid March until early June last year. This year we will have been in level 5 from early October until June, albeit with a 23 day break in December for our ‘meaningful Christmas’.
How anyone can say this is proportionate or in our best interests as a whole is beyond me. Not when you consider the catastrophic economic and social effects these lockdowns are having. There is simply no justifying it.
We are on a suicide mission now.

There will be absolute carnage if at least the 5k isnt lifted, people were bored before xmas. Now we're bored and angry. If we're asked to keep going until June the rules will be completely flaunted.

Just been to a local park , ordinary people are far more intelligent then the Government .People out with kids on blankets distanced from others .Nana and Granda on a bench three metres away watching the kids play .A queue for ice cream with 2 metres between families and then families sitting on logs in the grass well apart from each other . This should be encouraged and praised and not telling us to do more.
Outdoors should be encouraged , money spent on benches in park , grants for cafe to get awnings and serve outdoors .But no, they throw €350 at the staff weekly instead of finding way to encourage them back to work and outdoor seating .

They are being flaunted already because people have lost hope .If we had a road map out then maybe we could see hope and wait but now with no guidance , no leadership and no end in sight people threw in the towel and said F this .

Asked to " do a bit more " when we are worn out, depressed, sad and anxious just made it all worse and people said NO , no more I am done and did their own thing .

Exactly. If everyone met up like this for the next few months then the virus numbers in the population would plummet, giving space for vaccination. It should be made clear that such outdoor meetings is low risk and is to be encouraged in place of indoor meetings without masks.

Please share with the class how many people have 'long covid' - then compare that to the imposition being imposed on 4m plus people not to mention damage to the economy for the future.

Long Covid has never been raised a reason for lockdown.

People need to cop on and stop being scared to step outside of their houses.

How many people have Lymes Disease - perhaps we should shut down the woodlands this year to control that too.

At some point we have to accept there are diseases and illnesses out there, some will get them and some will get them bad, the rest of us are luckier and won't get them. We have lived diseases and it has been that way for years.

Irish people today have not lived with diseases in the time honoured sense you are using here. Homo sapiens have. You and I most certainly have not. Malaria has shaped societies and economies for centuries. We have no experience of anything like that because we've been lucky. Super lucky!

Long COVID isn't something to be dismissed. It's not a reason for lockdown it is however something that will burden many states. There's about 10,000 people in this country with MS. These people required medical resources. If we have only a 1,000 people with Long COVID out of this mess then that may require a significant amount of resources. Resources which our under capacity health system never had to begin with. We don't need the burden of extensive of long COVID on an already over capacity health system. We didn't need COVID either. That's what we got and we're going to have manage with all of that somehow.

Dismissing things because they are inconvenient is never a good idea. Some people who got COVID are going to require long term support. What we don't know is how many this will be, the amount of extra resources this will require and for how long they may be required.

People will just ignore it anyway, like they’re currently doing. Makes no difference if it’s 5, 10 or 15km.
