In the interests of argument, can you post a few bullets with your 'spin' so that people can see both sides.

    • This is the "spin" ...

Average new case numbers have plateaued

    53nkqj.jpg

    • Currently the reproduction number is between 1 and 1.3 which Indicates the rate of infection is on the rise

Looks to be trending downwards the last week.

    Things are getting better.

    Good job everyone!

Maybe look at the overall / average number of new cases . So no overall not "not trending downwards"

If you look at everything in context, the extra cases relative to the extra tests is good news.

    Wha?

    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2021/0325/1206166-covid-figures/
Chair of NPHET's Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group Professor Philip Nolan said when all of the virus data is taken into account the situation is either at a very static position or one that’s increasing slowly.

He said the reproduction number is between 1 and 1.3 and he said that the situation with cases is "volatile" and remains "at high risk".

Does anyone know if the walk in test centre are doing what they are supposed to do or are they serving as a no appointment test centre to speed up testing for close contacts and people with symptoms.

Not supposed to go to walk in test centres if you have symptoms, it’s only for asymptomatic people, don’t know if close contacts can go, probably not

I'd imagine close contacts are probably going.

A user earlier said that her symptomatic child and close contact went.

Not sure how people's expectations could be much lower tbh https://twitter.com/christinafinn8/status/1376644324071514130?s=19

    "202"?

    Today's figures show * 539 new cases * .

First rule of statistics. Don't take one days data in isolation.

    Lowered?
How in gods name can they be lowered? Construction and 5k being scrapped can’t be negotiable at this point surely

People's expectations are on the ****ing floor, how could they be any lower?

The government are so out of touch it's actually funny at this stage.

Jeez sounds like the government will be caving even more to NPHET

Like you said expectations are low anyway

They were never likely to agree to any significant easing of restrictions and the leaks over the past few days are very limited easing of restrictions

Move from 5km to 10km, construction opening and 3 households meeting outdoor which people are doing anyway

Neither should be going to a walk in centre as per HSE guidelines issued last week

Symptomatic are still supposed to go via GP, close contacts via contact tracing

I'm finding it very frustrating that I can walk into an off licence and stock up on alcohol but I can't take my son into a shoe shop to get badly needed shoes for his supposed return to school in 2 weeks.

I think if they don't change the 5km then they run the real risk of losing majority of people if they haven't all ready.

    I don't i always focus on 7 or 14 day averages.

202 is weekly difference in case numbers and 27,823 more tests was carried out the last 7 days compared to the previous 7 days

    They'll change the 5km alright

Political suicide not to do that

I'm getting worried about them pushing construction reopening out to May

Mental. We're gonna be like this until next year if the government don't grow a pair.

Considering the relevant data - the plateaueing of new cases and a rising r rate - what are the indicators for rolling back more restrictions?

All this talk of opening up, yet cases have not come down. We are trying to follow UK who have vaccinated millions.

Why is this being framed as what NPHET want vs what government wants? NPHET are there to advise government, not debate with them.

Not having a go at you at all, just find the commentary around this weird in general.

So no change there then for most of the population.

    I agree

They don't help themselves though with their recommendations.

Except they already know there isn't going to be a major easing

I'd imagine hospital numbers and ICU would have to be a key indicator going forward with vaccinations increasingly covering those likely to end up in hospital, don't know if we're at that point yet, but at some stage that will have to become a bigger indicator of the situation.

Other indicators could be general compliance with the rules, better to have a set of rule people are prepared to obey, than rules which are probably better at reducing spread but are widely ignored.
