I bought the 1st Top Gear magazine in October 1993 which featured the 1st Mondeo. It won some awards from what I remember and I was impressed with its styling. Sad to see it go with the saloon genre slowly dying out in general.

So much for me hoping that they'd re-launch the Granada.

Unless it’s an SUV or crossover- no chance! They might make a larger Kuga and do that!

I doubt it. The last one the Edge failed. I doubt they will try again.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

God that was horrifically poor marketing- priced at least €10-15 k above what it should have been. Wasn’t a bad car per say just no one was going to pay €55k plus for an average enough Ford. Lunacy

Ford got the marketing for the Mondeo right when they launched it but in reality it was merely catching up with the rest of the market, the Sierra was hopelessly outdated at the time. The Peugeot 405 was 6 years old when the Mondeo launched, consider that for a second.

I don't think its so much the end of the market, more that Ford haven't given enough attention to the model in this current generation
If Ford havent given it attention its coz its a dying segment of the market. I bought a saloon as a daily myself ( classic ) and I quickly found I couldnt live with it. I invariably brought the family 7 seater because hatch backs are just much more practical and better suited to family life.

The Mk IV Mondeo (07-) was a very good looking car, especially in saloon body type, as big as an old Granada and distinctive. They lost the plot after that.
I wouldn't have considered that Mondeo a good looking motor. The proportions always looked off to me, especially around the back where it looked cumbersome, certainly not elegant. Big gawky headlights too which in fairness were for the most part in vogue across many manufacturers from the late 90's through the 00's.

Going against the grain here now and I know its subjective but I always considered the current Mondeo was a nice classy and elegant looking car, in particular in the right colour and spec. Refreshing to see a nicely spec'd one versus the usual BMW, Mercedes et al and arguably a more timeless design compared to the current OTT styling of Skoda's and certain VW's.

I've had a 2006,2011 and 2015 Mondeo. The 2006 broke my heart when the fuel pump went and took injectors and turbo with it. The 2011 was for me a great car, but the 2015 I had was the dogs. Frozen white, half leather, skirts rear spoiler 18" multi spokes, dynamic led lights. Only got rid of it as I wasnt using it at all.
Sad to see them go, thought the interior of the latest model was good, bar the touch screen which was a bit slow. If I was buying tomorrow I'd buy again, mostly been in fords all my life, love them

And hatch back rear was so practical while still not an estate.

Had a mkiii 2.0 tdci hatchback, plenty of power, practical big boot and great to drive. Other than the bumpers being very flimsily attached the quality was fine for an everyday car.
How replacing such cars with suv yokes with small boots, floaty handling and underpowered engines is progress is beyond me.

    🙈🙉🙊

Ugh I absolutely hate these crossover jeep things. I love that low to the ground driving position.

Ironically I remember when the likes of Car magazine used to accuse Ford of a 'triumph of marketing over engineering' with cars like the mark IV Escort and Orion.

Looks like the Evos will be the Mondeo replacement, maybe Ford will call it the Mondeo here or they might resurrect another old name from the past like they did with the Puma, how about Sierra!!!

Positioning of the rear door handle is wonky.

Rest of it is nice though. Reminds me of that new Cupra.

Puma ST is quite pricey. €40k+ I don't think it's worth the premium over a Fiesta ST which will go and handle better.

Looks nice but the dash or lack of is just terrible.it is a huge screen. You would have to wonder how long all these screens will last and what it would cost to replace one.

yeah, those screens look like a driver distraction waiting to happen... far too inviting for a passenger to go play.

My missus and teenager are TERRIBLE for having in the passenger seat, with that thing they'd be even worse

Exactly. I thought it was a relatively good looking thing and even looked into getting one to replace an SMax a few years back. The Edge I looked at was mid-50's list at the time- a few k more would have gotten me into a base spec XC90.
    I kept the SMax:)

I forgot to post the article at the time (last Nov), in relation to Ford's next generation of the Mondeo (if they keep with Mondeo name here) , and it's not going to be alone in this new market segment, Citroen has the new C5X coming soon (early 2022) and now reports of Opel/Vauxhall are going to do the same with Insignia.

Ford sponsor the Lord Mayors car in Cork. Mustang Mach-E this year instead of a Mondeo.

Not my photo, think it’s from the Mayors social media or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,550 ✭✭✭goochy

Are you sure they sponsor a gov. Body ? wouldn't have thought that was legal . Also I could have sworn last mayors car had bolands wexford on reg . Plate which seemed strange for cork mayors car ?

I see VW have killed off the current Passat saloon too now but the estate will keep going until both saloon/estate get an overhaul in 2023. The 3 box saloon is near extinct now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,375 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

It might not be the end of THE Ford Mondeo, but here's the end of A Ford Mondeo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,375 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Not quite. They are hugely popular in China still and so they will carry on endlessly, among the luxury makers at least.

Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Hyundai /Kia, Stellantis all have saloons in development and let's face it, there'll be an E-class around until hell freezes over.

I'd say the Passat decision is as much to do with Audi and Skoda carving up the Passat market anyway, makes sense to rationalise a little.

A few years ago, I was looking for a Ford Mondeo about two or tree years old, but could not find one anywhere in Ireland that did not have galactic miles on the clock. So I gave up on it. Went VW Tiguan instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭AyeGer

With the Passat gone I wonder will the Golf continue on much longer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,043 ✭✭✭Casati

Tesla 3 was the best selling car for certain months in Ireland and its a 3 box saloon isn't it?

The Passat sold in China as well as the one sold in the US are not the same car sold in Europe. VW have confirmed that they have ended production of the current European model Passat saloon. Anything new you buy now will be from stock already in the country. You won't see a new saloon in Europe until the revised model arrives sometime next year.

The Model 3 is Tesla's entry level model in a very small product lineup and they didn't have a compact SUV until the Model Y came along recently. I'd expect Model Y sales to start shifting similar units to the Model 3 soon. 3 box saloon sales across Europe like the Mondeo, Avensis, Insignia, etc have declining for years and it's hard to justify the new investment needed every time a model comes to the end of it's product cycle. Also just look at the amount of crossovers, SUV's that the likes of VW have in their line up now.

The Golf is still a very good seller for VW but I'd say eventually when everything is gone electric, the ID.3 will probably replace it in that segment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,085 ✭✭✭✭BonnieSituation

When they replaced the Sierra with the Mondeo and the Escort with the Focus, it was part of ford's focus on having a worldwide nameplates for their bread and butter cars. I mean, Mondeo clearly took its name from "monde". And yet, they have the Fusion in NA which is essentially a Mondeo, though they sell the Mondeo as well alongside it and the Fusion we know in Europe which was a beefed up Festy.

Sometimes car companies just can't get out of their own way I find.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,085 ✭✭✭✭BonnieSituation

So far, only Honda has managed to build a dash (on the E) that can pass muster for me. It's a wonderful marriage of tech and essential buttons. I hate those big screens plonked in the middle. That said, the Evos dash is better than most around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,375 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

The Evos will be tweaked and sold in Europe, no doubt about it. Its just a Mach-E anyway, bit lower and more understated.

Citroën have a lovely PHEV coming out soon called the C5X that will have proprietary architecture to be a full EV and will aim to satisfy outgoing saloon and estate drivers with lower slung proportions with SUV levels of space. Ic it proves popular, there is definitely room for an Evos/Mondeo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,085 ✭✭✭✭BonnieSituation

    That's gorgeous.

Speaking of saloons, the audi A6 is almost dead as a saloon now, the a6 etron is more like an a7 than an a6. And the eqe Mercedes is kind of a hatchback thing too. Will merc and audi persist with the regular a6 and e class? Doubt it. And no idea yet what bmw have in store for the 5 series.

Another big Citroen saloon/hatchback that hardly anyone outside of patriotic France will buy. I really don't understand why the likes of French car manufacturers persist with launching these type cars when other manufacturers who sold way more saloons than the likes of Citroen will every sell, are abandoning this segment due to declining sales.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,297 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The current 5 Series still sells very well, I see alot more of them on the road than the current A6. The next 5 Series will be available in petrol/diesel and full electric. Not sure if they will bother with a PHEV. They will all be on the same platform with the electric version wearing the i5 badge. Similar to what they have done with the 4 Series/i4 and forthcoming 7 Series/i7.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,375 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

The sheer heft that Stellantis are bringing to the table are causing really excellent sales of new, distinctive and attractive models, especially from Peugeot and Opel/Vauxhall.

This new Citroën is going to occupy a distinctive niche in the Stellantis line-up, yet the platform will underpin quite a number of long wheelbase models like the next Insignia, 508, DS7 and so on. So, even if C5X doesn't sell like hotcakes itself, the sunk costs on an individual basis, are low.

Besides, it's not all that huge, being smaller than a Superb and much less ungainly than a Santa Fe or a Highlander.

I absolutely love it. If its as comfortable as a Rolls, like they say, and if the price is right (including PCP resale values) I'll seriously consider replacing my Volvo wagon with a brand new one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 841 ✭✭✭GeneHunt

Apparently Ford has confirmed that the the next Mondeo is not coming to Europe.
