I was late putting out the bag this year, 3 weeks later than last year, depending on how the growth is over the next month i'll probably aim to cut around the 1st week of June as planned, i have nearly 100 bales left from last year which will make up for a poorer yield.

How far behind 60 units would fertiliser spread 30 days ago be due to our cold spring? I'm just wary of having nitrogen in the silage when I plan to cut late May.

I had wrongly thought it uses 2N/day regardless of weather and it would be finished after 50 days. This delay complicates matters a bit

Get it tested, bring a small freezer bag full of grass into coop and they should be able to test for you, my coop tests mine every year for free and i usually have results within 24hrs.

I'll still cut milker high quality stuff in mid May once weather conditions allow. 1st cuts well back, but due to the dry weather I didn't get more than 70units N (I had planned on splitting the fert on silage ground), so that works out perfect for a mid may cut still. Rest the 1st cut only getting its extra nitrogen now and will be cut as a bulky drycow feed in mid June, whenever weather allows.

I'll probably buy in likes of 15ac 1st cut ground now also, as an insurance policy against a dry June/July. Around here 2nd cuts are a pure lottery and cannot be depended on, and the window for good 1st cuts is closing fast.

Is the problem the soil temp.? We'd a good cover at the start of April and was looking forward to getting it cut 3rd week in May. Growth has been shocking the last month

Ground temp is the complete problem at present. We are about 2 degrees C below normal ground temp. This is exasperated by the fact that for April ground temps are below 12C for April. When ground exceed 12C grass growth is not impacted as much by day time temp.

Its an average 2 units a day in normal conditions. I imagine at present grass is only using a bit with a unit of N every day. Growth is brutal. tips of grass is Black in places this is the N at the tip of the leaf burning it. That is not a problem but it just indicates that grass is still not using up N in ground. In very good growth conditions grass will use up on 3 units/day. What is worse at present we can see no growth period of weather coming

With the way all prices seem to be rising week on week, it might be better to buy sooner than later

The frost also Robs a percentage of the nitrogen from grass the more frost the less nitrogen available

Had aimed for a cut on May 20th but can't see that happening now.

    Will likely give another week.

TBH that was why I was pricing early this year. Bought it at 84/ roll this morning that was paying for it as well. Not sure if I am doing right or wrong. We have a similar type of scare me very year. It often wrong to commit too early. Co-op's seem to have a lot bought so it may well be the wrong decision. There was no budging on pric e below a certain level. I bought the complete year's supply.

Bought the year's supply at 78 . About 6 weeks ago.

Acorn Gold. Used it before with no issues.

Think we gave 71 last year.

I see plenty of ground around here with very little n and the grass is still black, place looked better in February

It's more to do with the weather and poor nutrient take up, advisor reckons it's more phosphorus not being used than an N issue. If it was N in the actual plant there would be other issues.

Plan is to Mow 1st silage here tomorrow after lunchtime.

The "Dini" is booked in for reseeding in 10 days time

Crop is heavy enough in places , but average enough in other places (hence the reseeding) Got 92units of N back 8 weeks ago and 2500G of pig slurry in Feb.

Have you tested it for N. IMO for the last 55 days it hard to see average N used of 1.5/day. There could have been residual N from pig slurry as well.

Is there any point in spreading fertiliser in this weather with the temperatures, wanted to spread some pasture sward, and cut sward on silage ground that got slurry 2 weeks ago.

    Spread away

Only provisio is that you are not forecast more than 12-15 mm of rain in the 24 hours after spreading. This message especially applicable to hilly land as rain can wash the fertlizer into hollows below the sloped ground

Are silage covers VAT reclaimable, same as more normal 'fixed' items?

Can land reclamation work, charged at 13.5%, be claimed back for on the VAT58 form, anyone know?

    Land reclaimation - yes

Section 3d is land improvement, and has a reclamation box (as well as draining and fencing)

Black is excess oil in the plant because of the cold temperatures.has nothing to do with n content.

I'd be interested in hearing Lakill's verdict on the fastrac for baling. I'd imagine the view of the pick up wouldn't be hectic but we'll see what he thinks himself.
Will she be going on the wrapper and the McCormick back on the baler??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭Gillespy

View of the balers pickup is excellent based on watching George Saunders pov baling videos on youtube. Extra distance between the cab and hitch allows a better angle to see into it and there no obstruction from the tractor. Ideal baling tractor in that respect.

How much does the recycle levy put on a roll?
Wonder is there biodegradable manufactured? I know there is for the maize but it's about 50% dearer.
    No baling this week anyway.

So we pay a recycling levy when we buy the roll and again when the plastic is collected in spring?

Baler man buys wrap here, always has done so i leave him at it.

All I'm asking is Can anyone point me in the direction of a Competitive Farm Agri Store, Co-Op, etc.
I don't mind where it is even if it's in the UK.
With the falling price of oil ( the usual excuse for increasing the price )
I just don't want to be reminded of being ripped off every time we put out a bale.

Due to less demand for the likes of jet fuel, refineries have to specifically make plastic raw materials instead of producing them as a byproduct which all adds cost

Suppose some of them get what they pay for in terms of staff.often hear it claimed "he can't get staff" i never see these jobs advertised anyway. So i,l'll assume the young fellas that might be engaging in tik tok are queuing in their yards for a job at silage time.

Fastrac went great and pick up view is great. A lot happier than i expected and was lead to believe. (Happy I hadn't the camera installed )

Wrapping was a ****e show :). Blew a relay on mccormick the evening before, then had a wrapper issue but look little things happen and we got there :)

waiting on Elec Mechcanic to come look at the mccormcik a few weeks and to wire in the camera on fastrac but he had a broken leg so was out of action but got there . A few foreign words may have been used .
