Was only joking, it’s all good.

But, considering EGDN is putting up YouTube links to the songs it doesn’t take much to give them a quick listen and make a decision based on that.

Rocky Raccoon vs Rain - Rocky is another McCartney throwaway, but I like it a good bit better than a lot of them. It's so well performed, engaging and has just the right amount of charm. It's funny, I always laugh at the way he says, "I'm going to get that boy."

But Rain is a classic. Totally hypnotic. There's something seductively surreal about the song that they never quite captured in the quite same way. I can get completely lost in listening to it - Ringo's amazing drum work, the trippy bass lines - people go on a lot about the drumming in Rain, but Paul is doing all kinds of cool things throughout the song, the droning vocals and guitar, the stopping and starting. There's such a time warped reality out of order quality to the song. As good as Strawberry Fields, if you ask me, and a good bit tighter and more focused. An excellent song to listen to really closely, pure magic - one of the best rock songs of all time.

Please, Please Me vs Julia - I like Please, Please Me, it's great and charmingly dated in a way that still works.

But Julia is incredible. It doesn't get any realer than that. That's a man putting his soul on display.

Sexy Sadie vs It's Only Love -

It's Only Love isn't that remarkable really. Doesn't do much for me. Surprisingly square.

Man, Sexy Sadie still sounds so fresh. John's lyrics are cutting, but still don't go totally over the top and the whole song has this edge of wry disillusionment, those lingering sarcastic sounding backing vocals. And that reverbed piano underlying everything. The song always makes me think of a fancy soiree that's now over, and the lights are up now and everyone can see how bedraggled and wrecked everyone else is looking. That final groove fades out too early for me, wish it could go on and on.

All Together Now vs There's a Place - All Together Now is a charming novelty, simple enough to be enjoyed by kids but there's enough variation and details to keep adults entertained.

But There's a Place is far more affecting and powerful. The lyrics are pure vulnerability. That vocal harmony in the verse, that suddenly powerfully soars, before Paul drops out and John is just there to come back down to earth singing about "when I'm alone". Stop it, too good. And there's a sloppy vitality to the performance as well. Underrated this one.

    Fun Facts

During recording of the seminal album Nevermind, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain spent a lot of time listening to Julia on repeat. It was reported to be his favourite Beatles song (at least for a period).

The lyrical delivery for the likes of Something in the Way bears more than a passing resemblance to Julia.

You Can't Do That vs Maxwell's Silver Hammer - MSH isn't as bad as it's reputation (or as bad as Lennon thought it was) but it's still the worst thing on Abbey Road.

Rain didn't deserve to lose out there.

Im quite surprised RR got through tbh. Dont get me wrong, I like the song but Ive always viewed it very much as a "comedy" and very self indulgent track.

I like it too, but, it's just a very well performed pastiche. Rain is on another level entirely, an amazing track.

I'm just happy to see Carry that Weight getting votes, especially considering what it's up against (though Joe Cocker probably ruined it for The Beatles) probably in my top 5 songs of theirs.

‘Her Majesty’ was originally supposed to slot in between ‘Mean Mr Mustard’ and ‘Polythene Pam’ on ‘Abbey Road’.

When it was cut it was supposed to be discarded, on instructions from the band, but one of the guys in charge of the tape stuck it to the end of the recording. It played after the group listened back and they thought it was great so decided to leave it in.
