    Group Q:

The Ballad of John and Yoko vs Lady Madonna - Very close this one, but I like the first person account of The Ballad, and the fact that the final product was the result of a single jam session between Lennon and McCartney

And Your Bird Can Sing vs The Devil in Her Heart - Love AYBCS. The spindly guitar, the lyrics, delivery. Whopper tune.

I Call Your Name vs I'm Only Sleeping - The atmosphere in I'm Only Sleeping is appropriately dreamy and spacey. Great use of the backward masked guitar. A rich song.

The Night Before vs She's a Woman: I like how McCartney's singing right at the edge of his range, gives it a bit of electricity. Like the percussive stabs of guitar and the piano to give it a bit of extra flavour. It's a cool track.

She’s a Woman - there’s a track I’d almost forgotten. I’m sure Arghus, Declan or Emmet can correct me here but I believe this song , Yes it Is and This Boy were only ever released as B sides?

I’m more into the later experimental, trippy, better played/produced stuff but some of the vocal performances on those earlier B tracks are great. Hopefully one of the three I mentioned can be a dark horse - don’t expect any to win but would like to see at least one go far.

Yeah, they’re all B sides. ‘I Feel Fine’, ‘Ticket to Ride’ and ‘I Want to Hold your Hand’.

I know them from the ‘Past Masters Vol. 1’ compilation. Has the German language versions of ‘She Loves You’ and ‘I Want to Hold your Hand’ on it too.

Am I imagining it or are a lot of the Sgt. Pepper songs either coming up against each other or a monster?

I equate some of the earlier songs with the live versions rather than the studio versions linked here.
I voted for "this boy" and "she's a woman" mainly because I love both Paul and John's vocals on the live versions of them. Their earlier stuff is unbelievable live, considering they only did it for a short while, "I'm down" is another one. Although I love Lennon's voice, Paul could really rattle off a tune when he wanted to.

    Group R -

And I Love Her vs The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill: And I Love Her is transcendentally brilliant ballad. The way it hovers somewhere between major and minor, meaning that despite how wide eyed it can seem in parts, there's a bittersweet quality to it, a hint of uncertainty and melancholy - "bright are the stars that shine/dark is the sky" - that saves it from cheese and elevates it beyond the saccharine. The tasteful arrangement, that subtle but brilliant acoustic riff, the melody... Stop it: it's genius.

How anyone could honestly vote for Bungalow Bill - a complete throwaway - over it is absolutely inexplicable to me.

You Never Give Me Your Money vs Eight Days a Week: YNGMYM is undoubtedly an effective tune and it's hard not to get a bit choked up on account of its mood of rueful sadness, but Eight Days A Week is too good to be denied. The hooks in that song aren't even fair.

Being for The Benefit of Mister Kite vs Yesterday: I really like the whacked out weirdness of BFTBOMK, always have, and if I had the choice of whether to put it or Yesterday on to listen to, maybe it'd come out on top. But, I think, whatever about which of them I might feel like listening to over the other Yesterday is the objectively superior song. So I have to vote for Yesterday. It's bad luck for BFTBOMK, it'd win more than a few match ups.

Lovely Rita vs Run For Your Life: Run for Your Life is so singular in its absolute malice that it's shocking. It's kind of a disgusting song really, but I'm okay with the darkness and the dirt from time to time.

Well, so far, six of us voted for Bungalow Bill. What's wrong with us? :D

To be honest, I used to quite like And I Love Her years ago, but I have gone off it quite a bit since. I just find it tedious these days. Bill is a jolly affair by comparison! :)

Oh! Darling vs Back in the U.S.S.R - Awful Paul song (by his standards) v cracker of a rock tune from Paul - Paul does the lead guitar as well.

I Feel Fine vs Revolution 9 - Revolution 9 is an interesting piece of avant-garde but always was going to suffer against one of the stronger songs like this one.

A Day in the Life vs Paperback Writer - Like Quickbeam said, this is a tough break as both are really good songs, but it's hard to beat A Day in the Life.
