Sitting here seeing people vote for the mediocre I Want To Hold Your Hand over the infinitely superior Blackbird...

I want to hold your hand is mediocre?
Null and voids anything you say afterwards.

In comparison to plenty of far superior Beatles songs, yes it's mediocre, and I stand by that.

In all of music, sure, mediocre is an unfair descriptor, but we're in a tournament now so the gloves are off, and its time to get used to low blow statements during outbursts of frustration when people are voting the wrong way...

If we've learned anything from music tournaments around here is that Democracy doesn't work as the majority of the plebs voting tend to get it wrong more often than not. ;)

The deeper into the tournament we get and the more controversial the head-to-heads become people will start flipping tables and smashing the place up... :pac:

Ah, the rancour begins... Great to see.

I'd have to agree with LeVar there have been examples of plebish voting getting it wrong. Like the mediocre Honey Pie initially dumping out the infinitely superior Tomorrow Never Knows. Madness.

People aren't voting the wrong way though.
They're voting which song they prefer in a head to head.
No one can help it if a dull song like blackbird with its tweety birds is overlooked by a moptop stone cold classic like I want to hold your hand!

I’d agree with you, N, but then we’d both be wrong.

‘Blackbird’ is worthy of Keats, himself.

Imagine if this wasn't a democracy and El Gato just opened a thread to say "such-n-such is the best Beatles song", dictorial-like and that was it, end of competition :P Democracy may be imperfect, but it's fun watching the despair :D

I did try for an early coup against the process but it cost me ‘Dig a Pony’, one of my top 3 Beatles’ tracks.

They may force this freedom upon us but they cannot take away our, inalienable, right to bitch and moan!

I have already decided to vote against Honey Pie regardless of the opposition as vengeance.

Democracy does not need to be mature.

    Group C -

    While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Don't Let Me Down: Can't stand the other tune.

Hey Jude - Love Martha My Dear, but it's no Hey Jude.

    Group D -

    We Can Work it Out

I Wanna Hold Your Hand: Right... obviously Blackbird is a great tune and I wouldn't blame anyone for voting for it, but to claim that IWHYH is mediocre is, quite simply, daft: that jangly and instantly recognisable intro, that sense of propulsive momentum into the first verse, the stridency and certainty in their vocals selling it and making you pay attention, the crazy memorable hooks everywhere, the harmonies in the chorus are absolutely ridiculous particularly the second chorus where they sustain and sustain them past the point of distortion and into brilliance, the crisp and varied drumming throughout the entire song, the bridge that switches the momentum effortlessly... etc and etc and etc again. Stop it, what a song. Mediocre? You're having a laugh! It's genius in a bottle.

    Strawberry Fields Forever.

Blackbird is right up there with Wonderwall in terms of "Ooh, a guitar! Look what I can do!"

Hey Jude being the unrequested but inevitable encore.
