    Voted against it here but if Help! wins the overall it looks like it will have done it the hard way. Strawberry Fields and Across the Universe - tough draws.

    Yesterday: I like the edginess of You Can't Do That, but Yesterday is a classic.

    Day Tripper

    Tomorrow Never Knows vs A Hard Day's Night - very, very close this one. TNK edges it for because of what it signifies both for the band and of popular culture at the time in large. And it still sounds really cool.

    I Saw Her Standing There: Lady Madonna is great tune, but ISHST is one of the absolute best songs of the early period, with not a single bit wasted.

    Julia: Rock Racoon is an entertaining and well performed tune, but Julia is on another level entirely. Okay, maybe if one doesn't know the whole backstory - Julia being John's mother who inspired and encouraged him, but whose tragic death filled him full of unresolved pain and anger for years and years - then you might be forgiven for underrating it, but if you do know it, it's an incredibly powerful song. Ghostly, evocative, delicate but yet kinda scary in its starkness, in it's pure unadornedness matched with how emotionally charged it really is. After the yeah, yeahs, yeahs, strawberry fields and go go ga joobs, Julia is the sound of a man breaking it down to the fundamentals: the stuff of his soul -

    "Half of what I say is meaningless/But I say it just to reach you Julia"

    Julia is amazing. Part love song, part invocation, part exorcism, part Freudian headfck. It's profound. Rocky Raccoon, by comparison is a child's play thing that looks nice, but means nothing.


    Help!: I have always found Across The Universe to be a bit overrated.
