I got two recently and they were actually new units in their original sealed boxes. We don't use the Apple Remote, at all. Each AppleTV is controlled from the respective TV remote. With the LG and and Samsung TV I configured the TV settings to go to the correct input on startup. Both TVKs came with a quality remote and Wifey is VERY happy with the setup. I presume the same is possible with the Philips, but I haven't looked at it yet. (It's a bedroom TV and we don't use it much.j

Anybody know how long the lag is watching rte on eir tv apple box to actual live tv v aerial or satellite

also I have bought the refurb box instead of paying multiroom and the tech department said in theory it should work

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭dmcg90

    Is this still the case?

I use Google Wifi with the Virgin Media box basically in Bridge Mode.

If I replicate the same set up with Eir, will that mean I can’t access EirTV on the Apple TV?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 655 ✭✭✭babelfish1990

I haven't tried it - but as long as you are still connected to the Eir Broadband line that is associated with the Eir TV subscription, then you should be able to use Eir TV. I don't see why using Bridge mode would impact on this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,811 ✭✭✭Mr Velo

It's approx 20 seconds. Saw it myself this past weekend, had Kerry v Derry on the EirTV in one room, and on aerial connection in another and there the eirtv was around 20 seconds behind - maybe a little less.

Via apple or the eir vision box ?

The level of delay is not constant. I have seen delays from 2-3s to 20s, or more. Even the difference in delay between 2 TVs in our house, set to the same channel, can be substantial.

It would appear that any AppleTV will work, I use a total of three.

I don't have access to the technical details of the platform, so cannot give a definitive answer. However, I would be very surprised if your setup didn't work.

It would appear that eir are using a third party TV platform, similar, if not the same, to that used by some TV companies in the UK. It then comes down to how program rights are managed. The TV platform holds information about your subscription and what programmes/channels you are allowed to access, if any. That subscription is linked to specific devices.

With AppleTV, the TV Provider feature is used to log you on to the eirTV service. It would appear, from a rudimentary test and from eir statements, that such logins are only allowed from the eir Brodband network. When you use bridge mode you are still on the eir Network, so should work, once you have a valid eir Tv subscription.

    Hi

I have eir tv and I was previously on eir broadband

Got sky broadband installed today, its working fine and lots of devices connected to it

on my eir tv apple box I entered the new sky broadband credentials and its connected to the new sky broadband wifi network

Prime video works and all other apps are fine on the apple box

However when I go to view Eir tv, it gives this error: "Due to content restrictions, this content is unavailable in your current location"

    any ideas?

Did I hear something before that eir TV will only work with the eir broadband network

  • Registered Users Posts: 476 ✭✭jonnreeks

By the by, what do you get with the Eir TV package now?

And from what I have heard, if you haven't got the new efibre installed speeds, 1Gb minimum, then the Eir connection just does not work!

So many customers who took the Eir package, including the the TV option, have had so many problems!

    😒

eir TV on the Apple TV 4K box only works if you have an eir TV subscription, which you probably had as part of your eir Broadband bundle. If you have ceased the bundle, then you no longer have a subscription. The Apple box will continue to work for other apps, but the eir TV app needs a subscription. The eir TV subscription at €9.99pm is very good value, and it supports multi-room (if you buy additional boxes yourself). I find eir are always willing to renew this and their mobile subscriptions also at €9.99pm each year - but you have to phone them up to re-negotiate. Sky have introduced a similar product - Sky Stream - but it is considerably more expensive than eir particularly if you add multi-room, doesn't have as good recording functionality, and the box is proprietary, so you can't use it after you leave Sky.

so the thing is, I am still with eir for TV supposedly

it was only the broadband that got switched today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 655 ✭✭✭babelfish1990

How is that possible, unless you have a second line? Eir only offer TV as part of a Broadband bundle?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,738 ✭✭✭obi604

yeah, rang the eir call center and they confirmed this

The rep in eir I spoke to a few days ago told me my Eir tv would work fine with any broadband provider 🤔

  • Registered Users Posts: 70 ✭✭biglad40

My multiroom refurb box came from eir. Great value for 59 euro. Few scratches on box but nothing u would notice or care about

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 655 ✭✭✭babelfish1990

He probably meant that you can continue to use the Apple TV box with another broadband supplier, which is true.

If you are within your 14 days you could probably switch back to Eir and get the full new customer discount? Adding TV with Sky is going to cost you a lot more than €9.99!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 787 ✭✭✭Akula

Any idea which model of Apple TV and remote they are shipping out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,491 ✭✭✭NewClareman

For the eirTV HD channels you need about 5Mbps, so eFibre is not required. We have 22Mbps and can watch 2 TV channels, even 3 at a pinch. It is barely sufficient for 4K streaming with a small (but noticeable) drop in quality when also watching a HD channel.

To subscribe to eirTV you must be an eirTV customer. An eirTV subscriber can register 3 devices (e.g. table, phone - but not an AppleTV) that can be used to watch eirTV when mobile. These devices can be used outside the eirTV broadband network. Hope this helps...

See they've taken off the music channels in the last few days from the basic subscription 😔

They were never on the basic sub, Eir gave everyone a free month of the 'plus' subscription - but kept it very, very quiet for some reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 461 ✭✭gmacww

Yep. Never part of the standard pack just gave a free month. It’s a standard have a free month, see what you’re missing and hopefully more people will purchase it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 229 ✭✭lenoude

Oh weird! Definitely had them last week. Thanks for confirming.

It's so miserable they don't include them, they're FTA like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 461 ✭✭gmacww

Nope not all of them are FTA. You would have had them last week but think they stopped them on the 8th. A lot of them are discovery owned channels which have additional cost to eir as they are not FTA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 229 ✭✭lenoude

Oh sorry, I meant the music channels

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 770 ✭✭✭technocrat

I’ve noticed a really annoying bug or glitch with my service, say I flick to RTE1 at 9pm will see ads and then the news start at 9.01pm - the stream is a min behind.

i change channel, then come back to RTE1 and it’s caught upto live TV.

This happens with all the channels, it’s mostly a min behind and can happen numerous times on the same program it’s slowly driving me crazy!

My parents also have eir TV and they are seeing the same issue.

    Anyone else have this problem?

Yeah, have noticed the same issue in around the last week or so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 770 ✭✭✭technocrat

It’s doing my head in so will try calling Eir support and let you know what they recommend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,491 ✭✭✭NewClareman

Yeah, I do actually. I was putting it down to capacity issues with the local broadband, as it only happens in the evening. Now I'm wondering whether the issue is with the TV platform.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,491 ✭✭✭NewClareman

EirTV giving errors this evening with stream processing issue, across multiple channels.

last week it was picture freezing.during the Rugby World Cup, it seemed like a capacity issue.

If the can't sort this out the service is useless.

Must try this, thanks. So you can’t watch live but can record?

  • Registered Users Posts: 23 done123

You can record all channels except RTE and virgin media stations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,776 ✭✭✭golfball37

I can watch live . Bbc is standard with Eir tv

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 sumach

If you're watching MOTD on the Eir app it's geo blocked for some reason. There's no problem watching it on the Apple box.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 691 ✭✭✭hurikane

Maybe thats it, think I was trying to watch on my windows tablet. Will try on the apple tv. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 691 ✭✭✭hurikane

Thanks, think I must have been on my windows tablet and its geo blocked. Will try on the apple tv

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭colly10

When I watch something on RTE player and i'm half way through it, if I leave and come back I looks like it doesn't remember where I was or allow me to fast forward back to where I was. It's infuriating, any way around it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,776 ✭✭✭golfball37

It’s a farce of an app. I could be casting a show and when I go to next episode I have to wait for app to completely open from scratch and then I have to search for the tv show just show I can select next episode. Doesn’t open quickly either

  • Registered Users Posts: 23 done123

The UKTV channels, Alibi and Gold, both meant to be HD, are really poor picture quality, similar to Virgin media channels on Saorview. Anyone else the same problem?

The picture quality issue seems to have been fixed just now. They must have read your post.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23 done123

If I had known that, I would post before now. Thanks sumach for the update.

I liked Eirtv on Appletv box when I got it first buts is very glitchy lately, picture quality issues, box freezes alot of time and need to restart it at least once a week now, will get rid once contract is up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,008 ✭✭✭mad m

Ditto...Just as well I only got 12months contract....Ill be switching back to VM, VM had its flaws but not as bad as Eirtv

  • Registered Users Posts: 23 done123

I delete the app and reinstalled it which seem to help.

We decided to make the move from Virgin to Eir with some trepidation over the summer, but so far we've been very impressed with them. Broadband has been flawless, the one call needed to the call centre was answered within 10 minutes and sorted there and then, and I've never watched as much "regular" TV since we got Eir TV.

I presume we won't be seeing an Eir TV app for Android TV anytime soon? Have a firestick and a Nvidia Shield Pro in other rooms, and it would be lovely to be able to watch Eir TV on them. I'm not too keen on aptoide etc, but is it possible to sideload the app? I presume not if it hasn't been developed for Android.

The Apple TV device is grand, and has that Apple look and feel we are both used to on the phone, but not being able to access the range of apps we were used on it is a pain. And it's not exactly a feast of choice either on the LG App Store on the TV itself.

Just about to get Eir broadband and tv. I've got a Firestick in one bedroom, would it be possible to get EirTV app on the Firestick or what would be my options to get EirTV in that bedroom without having to pay multi room subscription?

Thanks in advance for any help and guidance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 655 ✭✭✭babelfish1990

If you buy an additional Apple TV box outright, you can run the Eir TV app on it without paying a multiroom subscription. Eir sell reconditioned Apple TV boxes for €59.99 on their eir-store.ie site, which is a very competitive price.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14 BearMarketFresh

Thank you so much for your guidance and help. I'll do that.

And does it work okay if you have done it? 😊👍

I have to admit, despite all the warnings I've gotten so far, six months in we've had no serious issues. Mobile service works flawlessly, the gig fiber isn't gig, but usually isn't and to be fair the fact that the box is in the utility room so everything is on wifi doesn't help. The only real gripe I'd have would be with the TV service, but that's more of a national thing as opposed to an Eir thing. And adding Now TV is saucily expensive to get access to the footy and F1 so will have to research that a bit, I think.
