The problem for FF is that Martin seems to side with FG rather than FF. Martin is a political dead man walking at this stage as he's likely to be gone as FF leader after the handover. The main leverage that FFers would have against another ignominious capitulation to Varadkar and FG would be the threat of his removal before December. FG may well be in a worse condition than FF when it comes to fighting a GE. FF is still the largest party at Local Government level but there were noises about FG grassroots becoming less enthusiastic about canvassing for FG.

In coalition governments, there's always a contest for the financial portfolios. One of the big mistakes that Labour made in the 2011-16 government was with Gilmore taking Foreign Affairs. He was nothing more than a Stickies pension tourist rather than a Labour politician. The same thing seems to be playing out with Martin supposedly wanting Foreign Affairs as a kind of retirement gig. Martin is FF's problem and it has to deal with him before he loses more FF seats.

FF 100th anniversary is in 2026,I wouldn't bet against Martin doing best to cling on for it....and bend over backwards to be in government for it and essentially give SF a free reign....possibly with a ceremonial position/nod for Eamonn ocuiv

There's still alot for Martin to play for,and his Stalinist style of sidelining/removing potential contenders before get too strong, leaves in a stronger position, than can be credited.....either way,he has left the front bench of his party in tatters in terms of talent,

The possibility of Martin still leading FF by 2026 should really scare FFers. Apart from it being after the next GE, the damage that Martin has done to FF simply in pursuit of his ambition to be taoiseach has been profound. Varadkar is almost the FG version of Martin in terms of losing seats. It would not be surprising to see a double decaptitation with both Martin and Varadkar removed by their parties as both parties gear up for a GE. Both are running out of time and what could trigger the moves would be SF going over 40% in the next few opinion polls. The Budget giveaways might buy FFG some time but they are putting off the inevitable.

I wonder will the government take on a broader definition of homelessness like any normal countries have (incl NI-whcih government like to lie to their support and proclaim they explaining/comparing like for like)

A proper anyslsis of the census data, will give us the most realistic assessment of extent of homelessness here and level disaster facing the state.....iirc the EC pulled em up before last election for their messing about with homeless figures and afaik zero has been to rectify it

I think the 100 anniversary of world's second most successful party (and Europe's most)will be a big prize that should make any leadership race interesting.....just I think Martin is such a condesending clown,he'll not let anyone take it,and no solid rift to remove him stirring loudly

I don't like it,but I do think he will leave on his own terms .....similar to the bert

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,410 ✭✭✭jmcc

Some FFers may remember what Martin did to Cowen. He was removed as leader of FF but continued as taoiseach. It would be poetic justice to have the same happen to Martin. Ahern's departure from FF was more of a getaway than a self-timed departure. If he hadn't have resigned from FF then he would have been expelled. That would have given him no route back into FF. Just when people start of thinking that it is a new FF, along comes Ahern to remind people that there's no such thing.

They should be all given bikes, considering they are making decisions like slapping carbon taxes on others driving...The good of the planet. How these phuckers continue to get away with this double standard I will never know there will be a G.E in the next 12 months

The Indo, which sometimes is extremely pro-FG, seems to be putting the boot in on Varadkar of late. McGrath's smackdown is being treated very favourably. Normally it runs a lot of fanboi stuff about Varadkar but this change in tone is quite unusual. There doesn't seem to be any challenger for the leadership of FG yet.

When Tony O'Reilly was the largest shareholder in IN&M, it was very pro-FF. When Denis O'Brien was the largest shareholder, it was extremely pro-FG. One major change from then is that Mediahuis, a Belgian company, bought IN&M in a firesale and it has been repositioning its publications in the market. It sacked Eoghan Harris and move the Sindo to the centre of the market. Could the Indo be shifting to the centre but with backing FF instead of FG as the best competiton for SF?

You can blame the idiots on both the far left and far right for this.

We had PBP et al. thugs and the disgraceful Joan Burton scenario.

We have a very small but increasingly violent far right, unhinged Gemmaroids and antivaxxers protesting outside ministers' homes.

Over in the UK they've had MPs knifed to death.

It's a drop in the ocean of government spending and if SF kick up about it, everyone else will remind them why Garda protection for ministers was originally introduced in the first place.

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

I don't think it's necessary.....looks like another expense that's not necessary....everyone else has to work until 70s,probably into 80s by time il retire.....while we have ministers Garda chauffeur driven around in luxury cars

Let it come out of their own wages,if they want it.....famously Simon Coveney kicked up at formation of last dail to keep his,and now looks to me,they have scratched their mates back for not collapsing government,at the expense of Joe soap

The gardai are going to organise a massive and carefully choreographed response to what happened in cherry orchard.

There will be blue lights a plenty, cars everywhere, handcuffs on scum bags, armed gardai all over the place, a bit of overtime for everyone involved and a few carefully selected media people to report on it.

The only question is what day it will happen.

And then it will all go back to normal a few days later

I have a feeling drew Harris is gonna go full RUC/psni on this,go in hard and make an utter balls of this.....

breeding resentment deeper into that community.....the gaurds being unarmed, require heavily on consent of populace....relations can/will be destroyed alot quicker than repaired......

I think an approach like love Ulster riots would be better tbh, slowly pick off partipants via footage etc......deosnt make for great headlines/footage,but works better long term

That retirement issue is utterly toxic for FFG. When people see politicians (and incompetent politicians who were responsible for various economic disasters) retiring early on massive and unearned pensions, while ordinary people have to work longer just to get the OAP, it is going to remove a lot of FFG's older votes.

Norma Foley was very weak on Prime Time earlier around the school bus rollout. Such waffle to straight questions. The department of Education must be one of the worst in government. Do they take the summer off? The minister certainly goes missing when there is trouble brewing.

Still no sign of Junior Cert results either. The exam was in June.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

It's an absolute disaster. I work in the transport industry and can confirm the contract operators warned Bus Eireann as early as last Xmas that there was a huge problem coming down the tracks in regards retaining drivers for bus routes as many are reaching retirement age and others are walking away because of poor pay and CPC module requirements which they have to fund themselves. Now either Norma was told this and is just plain lying or Bus Eireann didn't tell her about the issue even when it was obvious thousands of extra kids would be looking for transport with the free ticket program.

Some operators have buses sitting in yard because there is nobody to drive them. Operators suggested to Bus Eireann small 8 seater mini buses should be allowed to transport children for those on just the B licence as this would work as a stop gap solution until D1/D drivers where properly trained up but the idea was rejected and here we are.

The utter stupidity of forging ahead with the idea of free places is typical of this government.

39 sitting TDs retired before the 2011 General Election. Mainly FF TDs. They knew the game was up.

Several ministers lost their seats including Tanasite Mary Coughlan, Pat Carey, Mary Hannafin, Barry Andrews, Sean Haughey, Conor Lenihan etc.

I remember being utterly appalled when I heard the pensions and lump sums they were getting after ruining the country. It was disgusting.

Hannafin for example was a TD for 14 years and 11 as minister - she was 45.

Hanafin to cling to her '€400,000' pension pot

SOCIAL and Family Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin is refusing to give up her old school job as she amasses a teaching pension which would cost her nearly €400,000 if she were a private sector worker today.

Her teaching pension is in addition to the Rolls Royce retirement nest eggs she enjoys as a TD and minister.

She is among eight teacher-turned-TDs who are amassing a combined €3.2m pension pot by refusing to quit their teaching posts.

    Ministers set for ‘golden goodbye’

The top pension and redundancy pay-off will go to Tánaiste Mary Coughlan, who is in line for a combined annual ministerial and TD’s pension of some €137,011 — plus a once-off lump-sum payment and a termination package of some €237,792.

Having lost her seat in Donegal South West, she will receive her TD’s pension of €49,932, plus a Tánaiste/Ministerial pension which amounts to €87,079 a year for the rest of her life.

On top of this, the 45-year-old will also get a once-off pension lump sum of €159,873, which is tax free. But she will not be able to claim these amounts until she reaches 50.

In the meantime, though, she will get a termination lump sum of €16,404 tax free, as well as termination payments totalling €61,515 over 12 months.

Mary Hanafin will also get a generous pension totalling €107,494 a year for 14 years as a TD and her combined 11 years as a senior and junior minister. Having lost her Dun Laoghaire seat, she will also get a total €189,830 in her termination package and a once-off pension payment.

It is quite offensive to peope who have to work until their retirement age. FFG politicians seem to want ordinary people to work longer to pay for politicians' pensions. That's really going to go down well at the ballot box.

They better be the cheapest electric ev going and not mercs. Practise what you preach. Sad use of a death in the UK. Not a peep when the South American one got nearly shot in the head. The worst that I have seen happen here was someone shouting "W*nker" The Burton situation was orchestrated by the Gov of the day. They could have got her out instantly Batten all the fools out the way but no. Can't miss photos of a Politician in a car smiling using a mobile. Apparently in fear of the life.

Could you provide a link to the current arrangements that allow for politicians to retire early on massive and unearned pensions?

I mean, it couldn't be possible that you are mistaken, could it?

    Found this interesting

Despite the protestations of the so called left

according to government figures, income tax receipts “are also dominated by a relatively small share of high-paying taxpayers. In 2022, the top 10 per cent of income earners pay 60 per cent of total IT, while the top 1 per cent account for 22 per cent”.

I've posted before that the mere existence of SARP is government acknowledgment that income taxes are too high but until people slam the door in politicians faces over it nothing will change. There is zero political will to cut the top rate of tax and most of the tax payers suck it up (I am a rare enough case in refusing to vote for parties that tax incomes at marginal rates of 52%) - maybe the multinationals making noise will eventually change from a system of bleeding dry a relatively small number of people.

In short, one third of all income tax was paid by the employees of foreign-owned multinationals in 2020, while another 9 per cent came from those of “Irish-owned multinationals”, which we know to include foreign corporations that performed tax inversions to Ireland.

Income tax competition is the new corporation tax. And, as the state grows ever more reliant upon income tax, the companies paying the most of it want it to be reduced. What happens next?

Income taxes is often an example I use to illustrate FG's political stupidity. Bleed people dry that should vote FG and try appease the so called left which 1) will never vote FG anyway 2) can't be appeased no matter how much money is thrown at them 3) incredulously believes our income tax/social welfare systems are right wing
