Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

BBC studio heaping praise on Dan James.

Having a good game and nice to see. Hopefully has a good tournament and takes the momentum back to us.

What would people think of AWB starting to play at CB. Quick, strong, has the height and can read the game well defensively. He's young enough that you could mould him into the position.

Can he? His positioning is woeful in any situation except for when up against a direct runner at him. He has been the cause of so many issues in the back. He's young enough, but I'd worry he'd carry that into the position too.

He just did something brilliant followed by a truly awful cross. It kind of sums him up. A willing runner, full of energy, frightening pace, but his final ball is bad.

That was absolutely awful from James. The easiest square ball imaginable and he hits it over the head of his teammate.

He's fast and a nice guy but nowhere near any decent standard as witnessed by his last two breaks... That last cross was horrendous.

Would imagine Varane will sign a new contract with them now, too. Can't see them losing both this summer.

Yep, done well the last 2 games and great to see. He won’t be the core of the Welsh team or United team but a great asset to have.

Gets a lot of hate and a lot unwarranted IMO. A squad player happy to fulfil his role with the occasional start and keep the ‘better’ players fit or coming off the bench. Can come up with a goal/assist too and that’s a bonus. His speed worries defences and they’ve to be on their toes even if his final ball can be poor. Still young and can develop.

Glad to see him do well at a big stage.

Confirmed: Ramos leaving Madrid. Should he be Manchester United’s top transfer target ?

Unless its a free transfer or for very little. Would be ok as an Cavani type signing to give some depth and pass on some experience but if we are getting a CB from Madrid it should really be Varane.

It's a free transfer alright, he's out of contract now.

His wages and other signing fees would be astronomical.

We shouldn't be going near Ramos.

We need to be building a team that can compete over the next few years, not looking for short term solutions in their mid 30s.

Should be going for Varane or Botman.

There is not a single season in which Varane outperformed Ramos (including this one when both were actually fit. Now he has age, fitness and pace on his side, but Ramos is the better defender and it's not even that close.

Now it's a huge gamble, but Silva was rather good for Chelsea in a team that had it's own defensive worries and inconsistincies for a while

If were looking at central defenders this summer Pau Torres was a stand out in the Europa league final. Comfortable on the ball and also able to play as a left sided centre back which has been a problem since Harry Maguire joined as he's playing there but is a more natural right sided centre back.

In Fergie's day Torres would've been signed before we'd left gdansk or wherever that final was and he'd have flown home with the United team. Stop faffing about and just get him signed up.

I don't disagree - but would also consider that there are other positions on the pitch that we should be looking at as well.

If you were to really power up the side this summer you could, arguably, be looking at:

    CB, RB, CM/DM, RW, ST.

Now, I don't for one minute think we get all of that, it would be insanity to think it. My view is United are looking at CB and RW, and will consider RB depending on price, and CM depending on possible sales.

I also think Varane is our top target, and then maybe Torres - at least that is how it reads at the moment. If Varane, or Torres can't be got, it could be United would consider Ramos on a 'free' and then look to divert the CB transfer money into midfield, while (hopefully) also bringing in Sancho.

United then look, again, at long term CB and maybe striker (replacing Cavani). next summer, next summer you may also have a better idea on Tuanzebe after a year on loan, but that should probably not be a major consideration right now.

It would require quick action and decision making from United though. I can't see Ramos still being free as late in the window as Cavani was, so if we were to move from first choice big money CB to Ramos and looking at spending elsewhere, that decision will need to happen soon. Also, would obviously depend on if Ramos was interested.

He had Jorginho sitting in front of him, Kante in the midfield and often played in a 3 with a coach who can organise a defensive structure. Its not really comparable tbh.

Yes but he was also able to organise from the back which is something we are sadly lacking, and something that you would expect Ramos could do.

He was consistent before Tuchel too. But yeah Kante would help any defence.

A Ramos/NDidi combo signing, Sell Bailley would be progress and have any of the young defenders shadow Ramos for a year or 2 would do a lot

    What about Ramos at CDM?

At the risk of going a bit complex…
    Ronaldo
    Rashford ——— Sancho
    Bruno — Pogba
    Ramos
    Shaw-Maguire-Varane-AWB
    Henderson

Ramos drops into a back three as needed, or pushes up on attack.

Probably be a lot of 5-4 games but it would be fun. :pac:

Hmm. You think we could try Ramos as a backup striker? Hoofball to him at the end of games, when teams are sitting deep, to try and get on the end of set pieces? :pac:

He's well able to score with his head so no reason we couldn't use him the same way that Liverpool use Van Dijk

Reports UNited have made an offer of 50m for Varane.

Would be the right price for him, imo, not that I know anything about it.

Madrid said to be looking for 80m - with just a year on his contract.

    https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-united-transfer-varane-real-20836407

80m seems insane in the market, with a year on his contract. But the 50m bid could be utter lies, it is MEN and Sam L reporting it.

Ayala was apparently a done deal about 5 or 6 times.

Most likely won’t Happen but Ramos would be an interesting signing. Would be interesting to see him play alongside Maguire.

In an absolutely crazy scenario (glazers making a push after their antics), if in some crazy alternative universe United got Ramos, Ronaldo and sancho do people think the team could actually mount a proper challange for one of the big two cups?

Yeh it wouldn’t be a long term plan but surely even on paper that would be the strongest squad we’ve had in some time. If you are getting players for free , then their salaries (even with signing on fee) are proportionately much smaller. Also gives younger players (that United have enough of) time and space to grow and get experience from players who know what it takes.

Then in two years time even the likes of Greenwood and rashford (who needs rest and still suffers consistency issues) will hopefully be going full pelt towards their peak, ready to take on the responsibility of top experienced players.

Offload Pogba and martial and the net spend even with wages isn’t that much. I suppose I’m just wondering if we could have a lightening in a bottle season with a bit of shock and awe signings , rather then slow, painful progression and an over reliance on youth.
