If it’s not more transmissible than B1.1.7 we have nothing to worry about in this country.

If it evades vaccines or post-infection immunity it is of concern.

Conor Riocht on Twitter isn’t sure icu numbers are in the 111? They do always say 111 with 34 of those in icu for instance.

I think he’s misreading it and there’s delays in reporting on the report

They have always worded it as X in hospital, of which Y are in ICU.
However there are situations where a hospital would have zero covid patients on wards and 1 in ICU (as per the HSE 8pm reports), hence you could deduce the figures are separate.

Why have there been so many outbreaks at meat-processing plants?

Why are the managers of these plants not ensuring that employees wear PPE and distancing among themselves?

You mean 2 outbreaks in meat plants in the past week?

Global coronavirus deaths are at their highest rate since the pandemic began and the World Health Organization (WHO) has said there are not enough vaccines to bring the global crisis under control on their own.

Speaking at a media conference on Friday, Dr Maria Van Kerkhove of the Health Emergencies Program, said: "There is still an increase in the number of cases around the world. We have the highest level of case incidents since the coronavirus emerged.

"The number of deaths we are seeing is shocking this late in a pandemic."

Dr Van Kerkhove urged people to continue to follow social distancing guidelines and not see vaccines as the only way out of the pandemic.

She said: "This means masks, washing hands, maintaining a social distance.

"We need everyone around the world to keep yourself safe, minimise exposure and don't allow virus to spread."

There was one in Cavan recently. Honestly, the stupidity of some people ....

Well, that's not strictly true. While it's great that there is currently no evidence that it's more dangerous or vaccine-evading, having a more transmissible variant isn't great news either.

That doesn't necessarily make it more difficult to avoid infection. Have people got no common sense?!

So one outbreak in Cavan is 'so many' ?
There's been 2 reported in the past 2 weeks.
4 in commercial, 4 in offices, you just as angry about those also?
Personally, I'd have thought after LOKDown, they would have herd immunity!
But as hospitals and nursing homes are protected with vaccines, the majority of outbreaks and cases will be elsewhere.

Very positive on a national level right now, but reading this you’d be jaded by it all after 14 months of this pandemic... still reeking havoc in many parts of the world.

I just wanna abuse my passport at this stage, take it out and give it some love:)

There are many close contacts of Covid cases in Cavan. It's not like it's difficult to avoid infection - even by the variants.

You made it sound like there was mass multiple outbreaks in meat plants. in reality, there's one you're not happy about in Cavan?

You know hospital figures are at manageable levels when RTÉ are back talking about suspected hospital cases again.

The Lancet has published a paper in support of Aerosol transmission as the main way covid is transmitted.

Hi guys. How likely is another wave around October if about 80% of over 13s are vaccinated?

Unlikely apparently, but I wouldn't be booking the 200 person wedding just yet.

When will the need for booster vaccines start coming around?

When will the need for booster vaccines start coming around?

Nobody can answer that either way at this point. People will have their opinions but realistically nobody knows yet.

It's why trial participants are monitored on an ongoing basis

    Good read thanks.

It more or less confirms what most scientists, people in the medical field, and those of us with common sense were shouting from the rooftops back in march 2020.

How many needless cases were there due to the WHO, EDC and CDC's and subsequent governments failure to acknowledge it?

And the goverment and nphet have still been remiss with hammering home the message. I see a lot of people and businesses proclaiming covid prevention compliance by half heartedly throwing some sanatizer on the table and putting some unenforced markings on the floor. This is not aceptable.

Indoors is where this virus ****ing thrives. I understand its expensive, but it should be a prerequisite to trade. Now that we are opening up the goverment should be enforcing things like ventilation and air changes in any indoor premises. It will save lives, and ultimately be easier on the exchequer in the long run.

23,000 people tested and under 500 swabs positive how are are numbers getting tested that high ?
Are people just going to test centres for a few hours out of the house or what .. surely the criteria for testing needs to scaled back with that amount negative tests.

Do not recommend =/= do not use.

They'll probably never be recommended by NPHET, but that doesn't make them ineffective to use.

Not as good as PCR tests for sure, but any weapon that detects positive cases cannot be seen as a bad thing!

Oh absolutely, I'm aware they're not as good. I just find it humorous that they've said this:D
