It was said way back last year that they would continue as long as people found them useful, now we don't. NPHET will, however, remain until Donnelly dissolves it.

Yup but scaling back press conference for now at least. Guess once most people are vaccinated the "emergency" will be long way to being over. Be interesting to see if there already is or will be a future pandemic taskforce but touch wood it won't be needed again in any of our lifetimes.

Incredible they are still not explicitly splitting deaths by the months they occur. A headline saying 8 deaths is so misleading.

Well, it is within the purview of the MoH to form one as required.

RIP, is cases high expected with reopenings? I thought we would be lowering with vaccinated, shame more deaths

It is lowering. Last Wednesday we had a 7 day average of 463 cases and that's down to 422 today.

In Hospital 109 today compared to a month ago 223 the vaccinations has played its role in that decrease.

It's the 90 day rule thing

But some of today's numbers went as far back as January, which is more than 90 days

Reported deaths, as they've always been.

It's great that we no longer have to listen to their daily or bi-weekly negativity. Less opportunity as well for RTE to run with the most negative quotes possible from such press conferences. A win win all round!

Whatever will RTE and George Lee do when Covid is strangled? :pac:

"Reports show that 1 in every 10 million vaccinated worldwide are constantly itchy. We look at why ... "

I hope they don't scatter until they have appeared in front of the independent inquiry into the handling of the pandemic.

Yep and not to mention Turbidy and the Late Late show! RTE's reporting throughout this pandemic has been really awful and the best thing to do in response to that is to vote with your feet so to speak. I simply do not watch RTE anymore (and will not in the future either) and I know several people who also have done likewise.

Kildare has overtaken Donegal as the county with highest incidence rate. The dogs on the street in kildare would want to set up their own covid hotline...

The two governments have handled it, they just give advice to be acted on or not.

Ara nobody had to listen to them. Think they haven't been daily for nearly a year now.

They're been regularly pimping themselves out to radio stations and the like for ages now and not to mention the numbers guy Nolan's recent inane ramblings on social media. The less opportunities that we have to hear from them can only be a good thing now at this stage.

They have nothing to fear there. They've done a good job. The failure at Christmas came because the government didn't listen to them.

    Fantastic news.

The power got to Holohan and Nolan's heads. Some of the stuff they've been coming out with re: antigen testing, has been anti-scientific and totally and utterly wrong - as the Harvard Professor elucidated.

Personally speaking, I think once a week is too much. What they could do is post their data / Nolan's mandatory slides in the public domain for whoever is interested in that kind of thing.

Once a month is sufficient for the actual Q and A with journalists.

And what I'd like to see is Michael Martin and Stephen Donnelly taking questions and responsibility far more in the coming weeks. They've been hiding behind NPHET for too long.

Now they should come out the woodwork once and for all.

They're not winding down. They're just reducing the time sink that are the briefings.

Eskimo, relax: They're not going away just yet and their remit remains intact.

Once a week is perfect for NPHET briefings. Can they do the same with cases please and just give the media the numbers of people vaccinated too maybe pretty please? :D

George will be fine, he is the science correspondent so he gets to report on weather. Post Covid he can return to wild eyed reporting on RED WARNING HURRICANES

There should be a very large 10m x 1m neon sign behind Holohan's head beaming down the number of vaccinations in the country to date - rapidly approaching the 2 million mark.

It would at least be something positive to counteract the terminal weight of their incessant negativity, cynicism, and general deflationary attitude.

Aye, a genuinely positive development. The insanity of an unelected special interest group placed front and centre before the media, sheep hanging on their word. Cringe factor dialled up to eleven, "concerning trends" this and "the next few weeks are crucial" that. Prevailing air of gloom over proceedings, tormenting the nation. The day is near when they finally vacate the stage, good riddance to the lot of them. And the knives will be sharpened for MM & Donnelly, no more ducking and dodging. Ballot box will sort out those who prolong closures and deepen the public debt.

On course for 2,000,000 + vaccinated by the end of June. Many on these threads doubted it would be that many.

Could hit the 2 million dose figure tomorrow

I would not be too optimistic as number of vaccinated people may not change much in grand scheme of things. Take Seychelles where 62% of people got 2 doses and 68% with one dose and yet they do have a spike in cases and reintroduced lockdown.
But since so many people already had it we may be close to gaining immunity anyway. Half of the cases do not develop any symptoms so their immune system is most likely working good and able to handle virus with ease. We need to focus on how to protect vulnerable people if it is at all possible.

Were the hospitals in Seychelles seeing increases or was it just case numbers ?? Was it random testing or people reporting with symptoms for tests ? Genuinely curious

The insanity of an unelected special interest group...
People keep bringing up this "unelected" thing re NPHET. What do they want - a "Vote for your favourite epidemiologist" poll on thejournal.ie or something?

People (not you, BH) who you'd swear had only seen the words "mean", "exponential" and "outlier" on the back of a packet of crisps, would certainly make an informed and useful decision in choosing who should be responsible for the statistical modelling of the pandemic.
