That’s what happens when you suppress a nation for half a year.

    Get used to it Tony

Meanwhile in Portugal, a country that was worse than us in January with hospitals on the brink of collapse, they're hosting a football match with fans from another country and everyone is outside drinking beer and enjoying themselves.

The hospitals are not overwhelmed. The hospitals will not be overwhelmed.

Over 50% of adults have been vaccinated; over 2.6 million doses administered.

Young people gathering together will not reverse the above. The pandemic, for all intents and purposes, is over in Ireland; once the rest of the vaccination program has been completed.

Tony Holohan needs to get a grip, as well as drop the clearly addictive power grip he has developed over the past many months.

Leave people to enjoy themselves, for goodness sake.

Tony's tweet wasn't worded very well.

However to play devil's advocate for a second, and people may not agree, that outdoor gathering would have been considered out of order back in spring 2020 when we had similar case numbers. The virus is no less transmissible now and in fact with that Indian and other variants it is even more transmissible. The recent mass outdoor gatherings in India, together with the variant, is likely to be a significant cause in its rise of cases.

Of course the main difference between spring 2020 and now is that we are in the middle of a vaccination program so if that gathering that Tony complained about causes a spike in cases in Dublin, at least it shouldn't cause a similar rise in deaths as a lot of the most vulnerable have been vaccinated.

But...there are loads of outdoor places in Dublin to enjoy the sunshine. I don't think it is necessary to gather in such large numbers in the city centre. I wouldn't risk getting COVID and potentially dealing with long COVID, and potentially passing it onto my family and friends by doing that.

So I agree with his message but not its tone.

I have a feeling this is a controversial opinion

Just proves how dumb it is not to have pubs allowed to serve outside. Allowing takeaway drinks with no amenities. People with nowhere to piss either. What do they expect.

It’s 21 degrees, dry and sunny. People are feeling more upbeat than any time in the last year. People have been under glorified house arrest for most of the last 15 months.

Expecting anything other than everyone going outside drinking pints in this country is naive. Cork is rammed full of people too. For most people the pandemic is over, the vulnerable are protected and the worries of most people are in the rear view mirror. It’s only going one way from here.

If Tony is watching the champions league final and sees the Chelsea players shifting the trophy he’ll need a triple by pass tomorrow

Let’s just say for arguments sake that town is busier than it’s ever been, think paddy’s day times ten. Even if it is mental to the point of it being perhaps even *marginally* unsafe, tweeting what he tweeted does nothing. He’s pushing out a message to 182,000 people, the ones that are seeing it are more than likely not in town. Why does it achieve? Nothing.

Now in all likelihood, it isn’t paddy’s day times 10, it might be the busiest it’s been since pre-lockdown, but even still, it’s just really poor communication.

I was right with Holohan early on. But, his failure to deal realistically and practically with what people will tolerate and not, is a black mark against him. The dressing room has been lost since around March.

If he doesn't want unchecked outdoor gathering, then open the pubs and restaurants with protective measures in place. Do it today, not in another week or in another 5 weeks.

Whatever about international travel, which I would continue to be circumspect about, all things considered, there isn't much justification for the continued closure of domestic hospitality.

The worst part is that you know he is going to be in M Martins ear telling him that the Irish people cant be trusted and that they will need to be super cautious about reopening...

If our elected leaders had any balls then Tony would be just another curtain twitcher, unfortunately he has a platform that is actively damaging this country.

There was a number of us that castigated Tony for a while now

It was a lonely hill to be on for a long time

Tony himself is now near the summit of a lonely hill that he doesn’t need to climb

    Such a load of crap.
Tony is doing the job he's paid to do which is that of Chief Medical Officer.
All he does is advise the government based on science and statistics.
It's up to the government to make the decisions and our history during this pandemic is that things have went wrong when they don't listen to NPHET.

And it's not that the Irish people can't be trusted, most are sensible but we do have a lot of gob****es too unfortunately who ruin it for the rest of us.
It's those gob****es that you should be directing your ire at.

Tony Holohan needs to accept that he is pretty much irrelevant now (in terms of his power control over the public).

People in power hate relinquishing that control.

    Tony is no different.

Go away Tony, you embarrassing amoeba.

Sunday Independent going with another fear mongering piece with leaked report from NPHET.

How long are we going to be listening to this type of stuff referring to youngsters socialising as gob****es (with a few million vaccinated)?

people need to adjust their perspectives pretty lively imho. this is not the same beast with the current level of vaccination we have. the risk factor now is reduced to almost irrelevance.

    Exactly.

Let's not forget that >92% of deaths were in those aged over 65 -- almost all of whom have been fully vaccinated.

We are now at the stage where over 40s will be called for vaccination next week.

Over the course of the pandemic, double digits of those lost under 40 have been recorded; presumably patients with very severe disease, such as cancer or autoimmune disorders.

I repeat: NPHET need to get a grip.

Once you give that power to someone it's extremely difficult to take back.

They won't let it go without a fight.

I am afraid that 19 July has now become 19 November as punishment for tonight. That is the price for relaxing too soon.

“Have an outdoor summer”. “No, not that type of outdoor summer”. Let’s be honest, Tony and NPHETs vision of an outdoor summer is them 2m crop circle crap out in Bray.

I can’t say I’ve seen anyone agree with his sentiments. All I see online is people dining in Derry, Belfast, Enniskillen etc or out having pints in seaside towns. For the majority of the under 40s from what I see, it’s over. (And yes I know, echo chamber etc). The emotional blackmail and headmaster giving out stick doesn’t work any more.

If Martin had any balls he'd make the suggestion that Holohan should consider retiring. If not for the sake of the country and the economy but for his own political career, it's clear listening to several FF TDs during the week that the luster has worn off Dr Tony and his sermons to the public so it's time to say thanks for your help tony but it's no longer needed. If he had his way we'd be locked down In fear of the quadruple mutated Pitcairn island electric boogaloo variant

I am getting a bit tired of being spoken to like a child. People are outside. It's low risk.

Most vulnerable people are vaccinated. I wish they would just for once cool off with the constant berating of people for living their lives.

Its a nice day. This has been going on for too long to expect people not to be out enjoying themselves.
